Your average Hummer driver isn't exactly on the economic bubble. I doubt that that's really true. I used to sell cars and from what I found most people with really expensive cars had really expensive car payments that they were struggling to make. That's how we ended up with nice trade ins from time to time. I'm inclined to agree with you, from my extremely limited (yet, as we've seen, far-too-often offered) perspective. Most of the really rich folks I know--my bread-and-butter actually comes from working with and taking care of doggies for a few celebrity clients--don't care about conspicuous consumption. They use stuff, including cars, that they like and that work well. They don't HAVE to show off their ultra cool cars. And the last thing they want is to be noticed or have their cars noticed. For official stuff and functions, they get limo'ed around. The folks with the expensive gas guzzlers seem to be the ones who can just barely afford them, but want to be perceived as being able to have luxuries. |
