Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread Where to stay? We are looking at making reservations now again since I registered in last on line time we didn't find anything right away that worked well for us. We are looking at a condo in this area... Okanagan Falls they say about 10' from Penticton. What do you guys think of staying in that area? How easy is it to get around on race day? Can my family go out on the course and see me in different sections of bike and run? Any tips or ideas of places to stay? I think 4 of our kids are coming 10-20 years old so we need a place for 6 and has a kitchen.

Expert 1110 Pitt Meadows, BC | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread OK Falls is nice, some pretty decent places close to the water as well. Bike goes through the town and that's where the run turnaround is. Getting around in Penticton isn't too bad as long as you're walking around the area of transition and start/finish. As for the highway between OK Falls and Penticton - I can't really comment about that on race day, but non-race day it's good and not too far. Edited by VanCityJ 2009-03-15 11:22 PM |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread We booked our flights today We're flying Southwest to Seattle and were able to get 3 free tickets and only had to buy 3. We found a townhouse close to transition that will work for our family. The condo we had found was nicer and cheaper but out about 10 miles and they rented it to someone else before receiving our deposit without telling us. They wanted 50% up front in a check which made us a little uncomfortable. We are almost 4 months out...getting exciting. How's everyone's training going? I feel on track but know the bulk of the work is in front of me. |

Pro 4675 Wisconsin near the Twin Cities metro | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread I'm always thinking of race schedules up to 2 years ahead and am thinking about my IM schedule for 2010 - which will depend on what happens this year (note that I'm not using the "K" word). I'm fairly familiar with the history of registration for IM CAN (i.e. pretty much on-site only, and maybe CF) up until last year. Can someone refresh my memory on the timeline (exact dates if possible) of when online registration occurred last year for this year's race. I know it will likely be different this year for 2010 registration but it will give me a rough idea of what might happen. Thanks for any info. |

Awesome news about the flights Kathy, free tix are always sweet, too bad about the condo, probably for the best anyways, closer is better for the supporters. 4 Months, wow, guess I should get started! Can almost see it, getting a bit closer, yep, there's the butterflies! |

What are some cool things to do while in Vancouver (with a prego wife) other then Stanley Park? Yes, Sky ride for sure! In the evening if it is clear for sure. Also I would strongly recommend a trip up to Whistler for the day. Leave in the AM and spend the day in the village, take the Peak To Peak. Vancouver has great shopping and food from all over the world, Robson Street is the main drag to see and be seen, then stroll down to Gastown. The Aquarium in Stanley Park is very nice. Grab a bag of nuts and walk the trails in the park letting the squirrels run up your legs. Take the Seabus from Vancouver over to North Van and walk through the market and Lonsdale Quay. Or visit Granville Island for the market, some of the world's best mircro-breweries (your wife may have to watch), art stores......here is a link for you to check out as well: http://www.vancouver-bc.com/thingstodo.html |

The 90 degree heat down here in Texas has made for one heck of a hot run yesterday (10 miles). Need to get more run miles in. Swimming though is up to 2500 meters non-stop. |

Master 2406 Bellevue, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread My training is going well. After IMC last year, I planned to take Sep - Dec off to focus on family and work. I started back up in January, but had a neck / shoulder problem in February and March. Now after PT and the like to fix that, I'm finally feeling like I'm back on track. I'm up to swimming 2600-2900 yard training sessions without shoulder problems, and my pace is better than ever. My fastest IM swim was 1:20 at IMAZ April 08, and I'm on track to beat that. I did 1:25 at IMC last year. My goal is a MOP swim. My cycling is coming back, but I have a long way to go to get to where I need to be. I'm riding to work again a few times a week which is only 8 miles so I use it as a hard steady ride. I'm doing long weekend rides. Last weekend I did an 82 mile 5:30 hilly ride and I was BOP (out of only 5) on most hills. I need many more rides exactly like that, along with some 100 mile mountain rides, to prepare for the IMC course. My goal is a MOP bike, and I'm far from it now. Funny thing is that five years ago I came to triathlon from cycing, but now it's my weakest sport. Running has been my strength the last few years. My IM runs have always been fairly good (top 15%), so I'm intentionally de-emphasizing run training to focus on the bike. |

Craig Unfortunately, our room is full but if you are willing to camp, there are lots of local options in Penticton. I don't know that I could do it before an IM but there are definitely athletes that camp. The local sites usually require a minimum booking like most hotels but there is a provincial park not too far off and I believe there is no minimum and they don't take bookings until 3 months before- but it is popular, so you would need to set the alarm to get on it. Good luck, Craig! |

That means fancy-pants photo-ID if not a passport (although I don't think you need that yet) for every one crossing the Border. Cross-border flying...passport is a must. Cross-border driving...A. Passport alone OR B. Drivers License WITH Birth Certificate (there are other combinations with landed immigrant cards, citizenship cards etc...suggest you check online) Cross-border shopping? watch your limits As of June 1, you will now need a passport when driving at the border. New ID rules begin June 1 for Mexico, Canada trips -ak- |

I had to use an airline credit that unfortunately is restricted to domestic travel. Map estimate says 4 1/2 hour drive. I called Okanagan Reservations and was able to get a room at the Sandman. Just blocks away from the race start. How's everyone's training going? 91 days left! -ak- |

Veteran 306 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread I have ordered a 12-27 rear cassette for the race, and it should be here this week. I am currently riding with a 12-25. I have hit some hills with the 12-25 riding in the easiest gear possible, and I just don't think I should mucscle it up the mountains with the 12-25. What cassette are most people riding while forging up these mountain passes? |

Lethbridge, Alberta | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread Before the race last year I was running the standard 53/39 rings with a 12-25, but I was worried by the mountains. I'm a bigger guy so the climbs seem to cost me more than some. I went all the way with both a compact crank, 50/34, and a 12-27 cassette. That might have been a bit of overkill, though there were a few places during the race where I was in the lowest gear. I think I probably would have been OK with just a 12-27. However the compact is on there now and I haven't had it changed back yet. I'm curious what a 36 ring instead of the 34 would be like but I'll probably just use the current setup again for this year. |

What cassette are most people riding while forging up these mountain passes? It's a great questions but varies greatly depending on the strengths of the athlete. I'm relatively slow so what will work for me will be different than someone who will be 60-90' faster than I am or is a women who weighs 40 pounds less than I do. My greatest insight on how the course might be for me was I met someone who is about my pace in races, and he shared what the bike was like for him. Probably more accurate for me than a faster person. 90 days from today....we will be finishing!!! |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread We found our place for IM Canada! What a relief and it sounds perfect for our family...3 bedrooms and lots of space. We are staying at a Cherry Orchard that is located exactly 10 km south of Penticton, in a fairly rural area, and 3 km north of Okanagan Falls, on the East side of Skaha on the run course and around the corner from the McClean Creek Road turn. I hope it will work well for my 4 kids coming (20-11) and my husband to enjoy the day and spectate and cheer me on. We get a residents pass to be able to drive one some roads normally shut down. We are under 3 months now...getting more and more real every day. |

Veteran 306 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread I am going to us a Disc Wheel Cover for my rear wheel that has a Power-Tap hub. I need to rent a front wheel, Zipp/Blackwell, etc. Last year I rented my race wheels from Inside Out Sports, but they are not going to be at IM Canada. I have not check with Race Day Wheels about shipping them, but I do know they are not going to be at IMC also. It would be easier to pick it up at the race, like last year, rather than having it shipped. Soooo. . . Does anyone know if there are any folks like Inside Out Sports that service IMC that might rent carbon race wheels? Thanks. . . . John. . . |

Veteran 121 | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada: Official Thread You might call the Bike Barn in Penticton. I have rented from them in the past, although not for race day. Having done the race 4x and trained on the bike course a number of times, I wouldn't ride a disk on that course. The swirling crosswinds on the descent from Richter and on the descent from Yellow Lake can be very tricky on a windy day. YMMV |
