I will be starting my official HIM training plan next week.  For the past couple of months, I've been following a swim focus plan and am thrilled with my progress.  I have no doubts in my mind that I will finish the distance.  In fact, I'm starting to think of time goals for the swim, instead of just finishing in 1:10.

How is the training going for all of you?

I think I've decided to go with the olympic-HIM bridge plan, which is a 12-week plan, so I won't be "officially" starting my HIM training for another month or so (i'm thinking I may do the first few weeks of the plan twice). I'm just kind of getting back into the swing of training after taking most of December off...

I miss all the smack talking...  it was entertaining.

So Question for you guys have done Eagleman before:  there really is not a single hill on the entire course?

Well, thinking about it, there is that one long hill on the course, and she only appears when you have head winds!!

No really, the course is flat as a pancake. If you have anything, we're talking just a couple feet as the road elevates from the water bassins, but that is all. The only hill I remember, was when you got out of the water, and had to run to the transition. Called a boat ramp, and that was about it.

Off course, that was almost 10 years ago when I did it.

Should be an awesome race, and praying for good conditions, and cool weather.

yeah the course is pretty much flat.....dead flat.  Don't be fooled.  There is not place to let off on this course and coast.  If you are looking to go fast here and you go flat out...most certainly your run in going to suffer a little.   The wind on the back end of the course can be tough.

I do agree that the biggest hill of the day is probaby the boat ramp!

There is a slight incline, probably goes up like all of 5 feet that is past the baseball field (at least I thought there was one there) after you make that right turn after completing that big loop of the bike course (maybe like mile 45 or so?).  That is it for the bike course- I remember Chris Legh at the pro forum a couple of years saying something like the only hill on the course is a 1 meter bridge.  But if the winds are strong, it is possible to have 56 miles of wind on this course, which can be worse for some than hills.  And no, don't assume that because you have a headwind at one point, that a tailwind is coming-  you can experience headwinds the whole way here.

The only real bump on the whole course will be Fred curled up in the fetal position crying as I blow his doors off ... and he will be easy to swerve around if you are paying attention.

Hey, my car died yesterday and my computer at home is being hacked by malware, not to mention I was sick for a few days too.

Does it count as bad form when a man who is down kicks another one who is down?? Cool

I'm in for Eagleman & it will be my first half. I'm slow & fat & will be happily trudging along. My goal is to finish. Hopefully it won't be as hot as last year. That was a blazing weekend. What's the "choptank?"

Is there a BT House for this race?  If so is there room for one more?  If not any suggestions on where the best place to still is?  I know I'm probably too late but may be able to get something decent if I keep calling and can hit when there is a cancellation.

Choptank is the river/bay thing we swim in for the race.

For lodging, check "Denton" in MD and "Seaford" in DE.  They are both about 45 minutes away but usually have something available and better rates.  Although vballumd found something in Easton the other day!

I'll second Seaford, DE. I stayed there my first year and it was very cheap to stay at the hotel I picked.  It was actually about a 35 min drive and 30 in the AM with no traffic on race morning.  Not too bad if you ask me.  Gets you out of town as well so your not caught up in all of the pre-race nonsence that goes on.

We got one a week or two ago in Salisbury.  It was a decent price.  Mapquest says it's 33 miles and 45 minutes away.

Yeah, Salisbury is not too bad.

I mean, I'm staying in Bethany Beach on the shore.  Takes about 1-1/2 hours to get there, but no big deal as I've comfortably done it the last two years.  The first year I did the race I stayed in Denton.

Does anyone remember if there is more tail or head or cross wind on the course? I remember it being windy but cannot remember in which direction. How much does a head wind or tail wind affect (in mph) to your speed? Would you say +/- 3-4 mph for a head or tail wind and maybe the same for a cross wind?

It is all over the course as the course continuously changes directions.  But you can almost always guarantee the portion from 30 - 50 -ish will be into the wind (based on my other 3 years and Chessieman).  I will typically be down about 3 mph into the wind.  Your mileage may vary ......

Cross winds usually neither hurt nor help when they are directly to the side.  As soon as you throw some yaw into it (angling it not from the side) it will help or hurt depending on what quadrant, but not nearly as much.

Does anyone know if there is a local bike shop that we can ship out bikes too?  Looking at the Eagleman site they have a service where we can ship the bikes to a shop in Timmonium.  Kind of like a tribike transport.  I have used TBT in the past and was very happy with them, but $300 seems really steep, especially for both Doughboy and me.  If necessary we will ship them to FIL's and then find a shop around OC to ship them back.  (After the race we are spending a week in OC with Doughboys family). We can also bring them on the plane but that is a whole nother set of issues.

Looking forward to getting back to MD.  Have not had crabs since moving to Texas 3 years ago.  11 weeks kids.

There is a big change to the bike course for this year- they have reversed the direction of the big loop- it was mentioned in an email I believe- they said it was due to traffic issues.
