strouse - 2009-10-13 12:28 PM I am in also-concerned about hills-coming from Central Florida-no hills!

I live in Kansas. I feel your pain! Yell
I'm scheduling two hilly 70.3s as part of my training plan, and also plan to travel to train on hills.

We lost a month already? This time is going to go by REALLY quick I think...

I signed up for my training group though for IMOO, so I'm all set to begin the serious training in February.

What do folks think of the welcome and awards banquet? Is it worth the $30 ticket?

First I will state the obvious....you as an athlete get in free.

Given that, if this is your first IM, I would recommend that your SO or parent or sibling (support person, whoever that is) attend.  The presentation of the videos and the recognition given first-timers is very inspiring and it is pretty neat to share that moment with someone.....
Now, do not expect fine food or drink.....just an oversized wedding style, bulk served food buffet.....

See you there!

If you have any friends racing, I'd suggest going with them vs. buying a ticket for someone else. It doesn't seem worth it to me, and I doubt I would have enjoyed it had I not been doing the race.

Thanks for stating the obvious because I assumed this was extra for the athletes too.

My wife and I are both doing the race so we're good there!

FYI - Jorge is doing another offseason bike program. I did it last year and it's great for those of us who are trainer bound during the winter.

DB  Thanks for the heads-up I can use a good kick in the azz on the trainer.

Two weeks between posts. Have we lost momentum? IMOO is right around the corner.

My brother got me interested in IM races, we did IMCDA this year. It was such a positive experience for me I literally asked myself "when can I do another one?"! Well, IMWI is 2 hours down the road from where I live so I've entered the 2010 race and am stoked! The main thing that concerns me is the heat. It's been so cool here the last few years, barely making it into the 80's on only a couple of occasions. This year race day was in the low 80's, for me waaay too warm. Heat is what saps me. For you southerners though you may just have it made!

Not sure if you guys saw.  If you are from around the Midwest the Spirit of Racine Half is now the Ironman 70.3 Racine.  It is on July 18th 2010.  Course won't be as nearly as hilly as IMWI, but it would be a good place to test your fitness and nutrition.

I'm trying to decide between Door County (more hills) vs. the 70.3 Racine. I'm going to be in a training group and I've been given only certain weekends where I'm allowed to race on my own so my choices are limited. I'd really like to get a Half in before IMOO.

Has anyone done both and have an opinion?

I did Racine last year and enjoyed myself (but it was my first 1/2 so I probably would have enjoyed any venue).  A few people on this thread have opinions about Door County - page 2 has a nice post by Gritty with some detailed Door County info.

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=183981&start=21

I'll be back at Racine this year.

I know nothing about the two courses, but I would go with hilly rather than flat.

I'm thinking about Boulder 70.3 - yay hills?!
It is on August 8, 2010. And a little closer to me than Racine.

I had my first IMWI dream the other night, too!
It was the swim start, and someone immediately grabbed my ankles/calfs and pulled hard. I stood up and lectured them, hehee!

Subject: IMWI will be my first IRONMAN!!
just signed up and i am excited and nervous!

Did Steelhead 70.3 last yr, Chicago Marathon in '09 and training for Disney Marathon Jan 10th, '10.   After that, cycle only until 5 mths out when I will start a structured Ironman training plan (Cycle is my weakest).

Did Insane Terrain 125k last yr which was a ton of fun but very difficult for me.

This will be my first Ironman.   I live in the N. Suburbs of Chicago and NEED to find some training partners.

Marathon goal time will be 3hr 35min, bike for Steelhead leg was 2hr 50min and I plan on swimming w the UIC masters.

I love a good thread and this one looks to be awesome for the next 9mths or so!

LODGING QUESTIONS

I know some of you have posted what hotels you got. I am just now starting to think about this Embarassed. I wasn't ready on the day I signed up to commit to a hotel.

So questions - some might be for those who have done this before:

What day are you arriving? I am driving from Kansas (ROAD TRIP!) and was thinking of arriving the evening of Wednesday Sept. 8. Too early? I see the schedule begins on Thursday, but really am not sure what I will do for 3 days besides light workouts and checking in. I want to arrive with enough time to organize and relax, but not have TOO much time on my hands, you know?

Hotel choice: A few weeks ago for kicks I went to hotels.com and searched for hotels during race week. There was ZERO availability. But today, there are lots of options. I am usually one to pick a middle-of-the-road hotel but am torn. I want this experience to be great, so part of me wants to splurge on accomodations. But I also am not made of money, and sometimes think it really does not matter how "nice" the hotel is, as long as I have a place to rest my head. What have your experiences been for an IM? Is is worth it to splurge, or should I save my cash?

Has anyone stayed at a condo/house as opposed to a hotel? I've been looking at some "vacation rental" web sites and there are some options in the area. I'd like the extra room but am not sure the extra cost is worth it.

Location: Some of the hotels available are a good 15-20 minute drive from the start area. Do you plan to drive yourself and park in the area, or have someone drop you off in the morning? Not sure how that typically works.

Thanks guys!
