Extreme Veteran 605 | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? Snakes Every snake is out to eat me. They're going to sneek out of the walls and eat me in my sleep. When I'm walking in the woods they're going to jump out of the trees and eat me. They're going to grab me when I'm swimming and eat me. I always run away when I see snakes. |

It was horrifying to see, but he was amazingly OK. For me, it's SPIDERS. Can't even look at pictures of them. The movie Arachnophobia was not a comedy in my opinion, it was a horror movie. And now that Sharyn has mentioned big, fast Florida spiders, I'm a little worried since I'm hopping on a plane to FL in 4 hours. Back when I was a carpenter, I hated walking the top plates, especially when setting joists. I am not afraid of heights (I actually kind of get off on them) but steel workers freak me out. They were building this huge building next to ours and I would look out the window and see these guys walking back and forth, carrying heavy objects, with nothing under them but a flipping beam. Crazy fools. I woulkd sit and watch them for what seemed like hours waiting for them to inevitably fall. They didn't. Yep, It is genuinely dangerous, and the possibility of falling and getting badly injured or killed is quite real. I don't miss it at all. |

Extreme Veteran 877 Pa | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? For all of you snake haters, I just ran one over on the bike yesterday. I'm become crazy when getting any type of needle. Not sure it's fear but certainly anxiety. I also have an adhesive phobia. I become a crazed person if someone comes near me with any kind of sticker or post-it. I don't have a fear of death but like another person posted I do fear that there may be nothing after this life. I don't like to think about it. |

Times infinity. I'll add "my friends" to that list, and add "not being there with them or for them", too. On a minor note, it would be heights - getting on a ladder or a roof higher than 15 feet tends to make me lock up and gets my knees shaking. It's a bad feeling. |

Expert 1170 Berkley, MI | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? I am seriously aboslutely paralyzingly afraid of snakes and eels. I was chased by a snake as a child. My mother hit it in the middle of it's body with the blade of a shovel... that freaked me out even more because it's head and tail took off in two seperate directions. Snakes = evil. Pure evil. Eels are just aquatic snakes to me. And this one is certainly irrational - fish. I had an aquarium as a child and into adulthood and would freak out if I had to put my hand into the tank. You wonder how I can do an OWS for my triahtlons? It takes a lot of energy and nerves for me to, that is the truth. Snakes + fish + eels = THEY ARE OUT TO EAT ME!!!!!
ETA- my friend here at work just informed me of the worst thing ever - a snakehead fish! UGH! It can survive on land and water... SO EVIL!

I almost always have test anxiety and sometimes put so much pressure on myself I can't remember how to spell my own name. Written tests have never been easy for me. The only reason I will look forward to taking a test is to get it over with! |

My wife has this and has had it since she was a junior in High School. She knows the material cold - flat out cold, but when you set her down and call it a test - you'd think she had never even read anything about it. It amazes and frustrates me at the same time. I, of course, am no help. "JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION"!!!!!! Then she turns around and roasts everyone at some stupid trivia game. Maybe if they let her take tests with a glass of wine????? |

Expert 671 | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? All these snake fears. Wow. As a herpetologist with a passion for snakes, I am always curious about what makes humans afraid of snakes. Studies have been done that show people are very polarized about snakes. They either hate them or love them with very few in betweens. It is thought that primates including humans learn their fear of snakes from adults. You can take a child who has never seen a snake or been told what a snake is by anyone and they are not afraid of it. Same for primates. However, it just takes one experience with an adult to learn the fear. In humans, we can pass this on just by talking about them with our children. Primates typically scold, abuse, kill snakes in front of their young. It is really fascinating and I would love to hear people's rational of their fear. I can't change your minds or opinions about snakes so I won't even try. I just like to hear why. I do have a question for everyone who fears snakes. What about turtles? Studies show an opposite trend with turtles. Most people are indifferent with very few people loving or hating them. Why the difference? From experience...turtle bites hurt a hell of a lot worse than snake bites and never heal very fast when they break the skin and can cause some nasty blood blisters. Snake bites for the most part (excluding venomous species of course) are the equivalent of having your finger pricked for blood. It hurts when it occurs but stops hurting alomst immediately and you rarely notice them the next day. Fascinating stuff and a great topic. Fears and why we have them. My cow fear is completely irrational and I don't really understand it except that they are big, stupid, and can squish you by accident. |

I can be out on the observation deck of a tall building and literally get nauseous and dizzy when looking down even when there's no chance of falling. Nothing ever happened to me growing up to provoke that fear. I never fell from any height. I'm just deathly afraid of heights. No clue why. |

This... And not a fan of rats...not scared, but REALLY don't like them. Had one run up my arm, then inside my shirt collar and out the bottom (really glad shirt wasn't tucked in...jeez) That makes your BT name hilarious to me. OMG...confession here...I NEVER thought about that! Talk about missing that which is right under your nose. When we were growing up, and basically living in the river all day, our parents called us little river rats. Brings good memories...unlike the damn little nekkid tailed rodents. Thought of two more: 1) Public speaking. Sometimes is great...no worries...fun. Sometimes, without warning, shear terror. Weird. 2) NOT, I repeat, NOT ever getting a Yanti Melon Press... |
