Expert 1104 Canada | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL Bikes...I have a couple. Bought a Cannondale roadie 2 years ago. Use it for much of my training, especially for group rides & if I need maneuverability around the city, etc. (IMG_3240.JPG) Attachments ---------------- IMG_3240.JPG (96KB - 6 downloads) |

Expert 1104 Canada | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL Last Year, I was fortunate enough to be able to acquire a TT bike as well. My local bike shop gets a great deal on cannondale & hence I went with them again. I mainly use this for summer time trials, races & weekend rides, alone. That's it for my bike porn. Master 4119 Toronto | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL debbiereid06 - 2011-01-03 12:35 PM I don't have a bike. I borrowed my friends when i started training last year and then fell on Mothers day and that was the beginning of the end of my tri training. I need to get a bike, but have no clue what to even look for and I don't have the money to have one be too expensive. As for my plan this week here it is... M-off T-2 mile W-30 min. x-train (if hubby is home at a decent time may go spin in the gym) R-1.5 mile F-off S-30 min. x-train (swim/bike at gym) S-2.5 mile Oh all that bike stuff can be so intimidating!! I would say the first place to start is to go to a bike shop to get measured. They should have a funny thing you stand on and will measure to see what size you need. With road and tri bikes fit is really the most important thing. You could ask to get on one of each road and tri bike to see if you might have a preference. I got a road bike and have been very happy with it. It was a good step because I hadn't had a bike since I was 14 and going from riding as a kid to going to a higher performance bike is pretty scary. If you're not as much a nervous newbie you could consider a tri bike You can keep riding a stationary or go to spin class to keep some riding muscles going but you could take a look at some classifieds (even here) to see if someone might sell a bike your size. I bought mine about half off at fall sale where bike shops were clearing out inventory. |

I need to get a bike, but have no clue what to even look for and I don't have the money to have one be too expensive. Do you have a budget? If unsure about tri's, many buy used (sorry pre-owned) first, prior to spending a bit more. Not sure about the used bike market in your area, but it is usually plentiful & brisk. You could always use it season & sell again if you wanted to trade up. Also, what else might you be using it for. Commuting to work occasionally? Riding with the kids? etc. Or just Tri. This will definitely impact what you buy. "family rides" with you on a tri bike are miserable!!! You are faster than the family without peddling! My first bike was my hybrid (pic a few pages back). Cost me about $500-$600. Great commuter bike. Excellent hill climbing bike. Great bike for riding with the kids. Some stuff you could think about... Edited by GoGoGo 2011-01-03 12:10 PM |

Member 32 | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL Hi everyone - hope yall had a nice new year! My ride is a 2010 Schwinn Paramount. I am not really ballin outrageous like that - got the bike out of good/bad circumstances. me and the fi were driving out to pre-ride a tri course last year and we got rear-ended (in the car, not actually on the bikes!). since we were only 2 weeks out from the race date, we were able to get the insurance companies to reimburse us for bikes that met specs and were in-stock. it was definitely a bit of an upgrade. The totalled bike was a Scattante W560 (Performance's brand) that I had just purchased in March. Current ride: Plan for the week: M - 42 min run; 10 lb slim down - upper body Tu - 15 min run; 10 lb slim down - lower body; core W - 30 min run; 10 lb slim down - total body blast Th - 15 min run; 10 lb slim down - upper body; core F - 30 min run; 10 lb slim down - yoga Sa - 15 min run; day off - may shift core here if needed Su - 45 min run; day off - may shift 10lb slim down here if needed my run plans usually include one day off, and i sometimes skip one of the shorter runs (not intended, just seems to have happened more recently due to holidays). so anyway, it's more of a 5-6 day run plan. the 10 lb slim down is an exercise tv workout. love exercise tv b/c the website has a lot of free workout plans to correspond with what's on demand. gonna do this until i build up my runs to 18 minute minimum - which will take me through this month. the gameplan/resolution for this month is to transition to a.m. running, at least for the weekdays. this requires resolution #1a which is to drink enough water. i tend to drink about half of what i need or less. FI has threatened to tether a water bottle to my head. looking to pick up a sprint plan (i did one last year that was 3 sports 3x week; might look for 2x week for bike/swim). i have a gym membership but have not yet talked myself in to braving the city parking to get to the pool location. the wambulance has been called. |

No snow here either, but too salty & cold for biking for me...BBBrrrrr Don't mind running in winter if light (see pic Half mary last Feb) Spin class once or twice a week to "maintain cycling legs". Otherwise I am concentrating on running & trying to get back at the pool again ( my nemesis!) (IMG_1001.JPG) Attachments ---------------- IMG_1001.JPG (89KB - 8 downloads) |

What is/was the recovery plan For the newer folks, it's not to scare you but injuries are pretty common. It can go from the occassional silly trip (i have some good pictures in my albums of one such thing) and fall or clipped in fall on your bike to common sports-related overuse injuries. I think some of can share of great injury prevention and treatment advice .... |

New user 20 | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL Holy Cow, this thing exploded while I was working over the weekend! Wow, I'm excited now. I had planned on starting swimming today (Monday), but went to the grocery store instead. Little one has a respiratory virus, too, so I couldn't take her to the YMCA child watch. I'm full of excuses, but honestly I'm just super scared of swimming. I know how, but do not feel good about it at all. I'm scared of having to share a lane with someone who knows more than me. I'm scared of not getting better. I'm scared of that scared feeling I have in the water. The sad thing is, I have a super supportive husband who loves to swim at the Y and would make it all eaiser for me. I just can't seem to take that first step out the door... |

Pro 4824 Houston | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with injuries. Last year about this time I was hit with an IT Band injury. I tried the roller, stretches, time off and nothing helped. I took off weeks at a time but as soon as I started running again there it was. I finally looked into someone familiar with ART Therapy = Active Release Techniques. I found a chiropractor in my area certified in ART and after only 2 sessions I was good to go and have not had an issue with my IT band since. I was under trained for my first Oly last spring as a result of the injury and while the run was rough for that race the IT band was fine. While training for my first Half Ironman I started having heel pain. At first both my ART guy and I thought it was achilles related and did some therapy for that but it was not getting better. After weeks of this I went in for an MRI and was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my calcaneous (heel bone) he didn't even have to point it out to me. My heel bone on the MRI looked like a spiderweb. Some time in a boot and crutches followed. I was not able to do any run training before my HIM and instead aqua jogged more than any person should have to. We bulked up my bike and my swim to try to keep my cardio in shape. On race day I hadn't run in several weeks. We had no idea what the day would bring. I finished. My RR is posted here on BT and in my blog if anybody is interested in the whole gory story. It wasn't pretty but I got it done. Going in for ART when I feel twinges or annoying little aches and pains has made a huge difference. I am also running with a new technique we are hoping helps prevent injuries. My #1 goal for 2011 is to be injury free - fingers crossed! |

Started taking lessons & have definitely made progress, but still am not comfortable. I have not been to pool in 6 months, the first 3, I can blame on a housing move. The last 3 out of disinterest & thinking I am to old a dog to be learning new tricks. Nevertheless, I gotta start again with the next couple weeks. There, I have bared my soul...Happy now!!!
