Master 2490 Atlanta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Four months..Yep, push is coming to shove, training wise. My focus for the last two months has been getting my 16yr old ready to cycle across the country...They left this week so I'm free to get myself oriented towards an IM. I've missed a few key rides for one reason or another, and my run volume is pathetic right now, but I'll figure it out...Still time even for us slackers to show up ready for 140.6! Best of luck to all with your training. |

Extreme Veteran 821 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Training is going pretty good for me; I am not going to do any of the small race (sprints) that I did last year so I can focus to increase distance and volume over the next couple of months. Let see how my legs and joints like to be running for more than two hours :/ hope all u guys training is going well too! Edited by camaleon 2011-07-03 2:00 PM |

Member 107 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread This may have been covered already, but does anyone know what wind conditions are typically like, or what they have the potential to be? I am looking into renting some race wheels and if it is typically very windy will likely go with a shallower front wheel. Thanks! |

That part of the world has the potential to be windy...Last year it was a headwind for the first 70miles. Previous year had wind but less forceful. The first year was absolutely windless, IIRC, and perfect condition for racing. |

Is the general ????consensus that sleeve-less will be okay? If swimming in 65' +/- water temps in a sleeveless isn't a problem for you, and there were folks who did just that, by all means...OTOH, there were people pulled from the water last year for hypothermia who were wearing full suits. Tough to get a consensus on this one. Full for me, definitely. Possible the water's a little warmer since the race is two weeks earlier, tho... First century of the summer done today...Legs had no will to run afterwards - I come home not draped in glory but covered in shame and guilt...Oh, well. Tomorrow's another day. Weather isn't making training any easier, that's for sure. |

Member 27 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Hey guys, Great tread so far. I have a quick logistical question. I am staying between the beach and the Hilton. Is it easy for my wife to just drop me off at T1 vs having to go through the hilton to catch the ferry? Seems like it would be much easier to get dropped off like every other race. Any help would be great. thanks. |

Seems like it would be much easier to get dropped off like every other race. Any help would be great. thanks. I took the bus to T1 last year for the HIM and my husband drove later on. He did not have a problem parking so I would not anticipate a problem being dropped off at an earlier time for the full. The ferry is between T2 and the Hilton. Do not plan to drive to T2 at all. Repeat, do not plan to drive to T2 at all. |

Master 2426 Central Indiana | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Last PM I did only my 2nd 4K straight swim (sc pool in 1:32) followed immediately by 6.6mi (1hr) indoor run. Normally not a fan of swim-run brick but was on tight schedule to get in both sports. Fought off mild leg cramps from ~34-3600M, but legs loosened up nice after 1st mi of run. Honestly a bit surprised at how good I felt after. Today rode 40mi (2+hrs) at intentionally easy pace (Z1-lowZ2 HR) & averaged 18+mph in sunny heat (90F/95+ heat index). Cycling is my background but I still need to break my hammerfest tendencies & practice dialing in IM pacing (i.e. save lots for the run!!!). B2B would be my 1st IM. With 3mo to go I think training so far has me on track to meet my goals (A= finish, B= 14hrs). BTW- From what I can gather it should be incoming this year, but how accurate are the tide predictions this far out? |

This is from a previous post in the Iron Distance about B2B that I had replied too The tide will be cruising this year. I can't recall what time low tide was in 2009 but I'm thinking it was around 5:30 or earlier. I knew the 2010 racers were in for a big change with low tide at 6:40ish it didn't have time to get going much before the race. The tide for Oct 29, 2011 is low at 3:32 so the current will be in full effect at 7. High tide is at 10:06 so I'm not sure when it will start slacking but all full athletes should have no issue being out of the water before that happens. The half athletes may not get much of a push with there later start. |

New user 339 Salisbury | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread I have a full wetsuit but that's my prefrence, 2 weeks earlier this year so water will be warmer. I guess around 66, I did the half last year and helped pull 2 people out who were doing the full at the half way mark, they were older athletes and slower swimmers and water was 63 degree's. So my recomendation if you are a younger good swimmer sleeveless will be fine if you have some years and your a slower swimmer who get's cold easy might want the full just for the comfort factor. |

Extreme Veteran 821 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread I say "TEST" it... If you get cold really easy (like me) go with your full, but if you don't then go with the sleeveless. Training is going good; two more weeks and I will start my peak; I am so waiting for the race. |

Last year (2010), the full started right as the tide was turning so it was a slack tide. This year, the tide turns at at 3:23 am so I am thinking that the current should be fairly strong. Here's the actual info: 2008 2008-11-01 3:40 AM EDT 0.10 feet Low Tide 2009 2009-11-07 3:51 AM EST -0.47 feet Low Tide 2010 2010-11-13 6:29 AM EST 0.47 feet Low Tide 2011 2011-10-29 3:23 AM EDT -1.03 feet Low Tide

I did easy-moderate effort 1hr OWS in a 74F Michigan lake 2 wks ago & was comfortable in sleeveless suit & regular swim cap. If anything I was slightly warm so I'm thinking I should be fine with that set up for B2B full. But I might add booties. Now if I can just avoid swallowing too much salt water |

253 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Hello everyone- I raced the full in 2009 (my first and only IM) and will be doing the same this year along with several training partners/ friends from Mid Michigan. In 2009 the air temp was COLD (like 34 degrees) and the water temp was in the low to mid 60's. That, coupled with the long run from water exit to T1 made me decide to buy swim booties and a neoprene cap. I plan on wearing my full wetsuit and these two other "toys". As Steve (RottieGuy) said- and he also did the full in 2009, the tide should be coming in. So, I hope to come somewhere near my 49- 50 minute time from 2009 and feel great getting on the bike. Hopefully my bike and run will be stronger this year and I can shave some time off from 09. Hope everyone's training is going well! peace ben |

Are your sure your from Michigan, you need a cap and booties. Your embarrassing all good northerners. That water near Wrightsville is no where near as cold as Lake Huron was last September in Tawas. Let me know if you want me to hand you a heated robe and knit cap for the long trot back to transition in Tawas this September since I won't be racing I figure I can help a wuss friend out |

Master 1770 Bedford, MA | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Hello everyone. I'm 95% sure that I'll be doing the full B2B along with at least two other members of my tri team up here in New England. It'll be my first IM after completing my first HIM in June. I'm currently training for an early September marathon, so my run volume is great. The bike volume needs to get up, but luckily biking is my strongest tri discipline. I'm really looking forward to the race and will be following this thread. |

Regular 233 Clermont, Florida | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Hey all, pulled the trigger and signed up for this years race. Did the 2009 version and loved it. Great course, venue, support and atmosphere. Looks like the tides will be similar to 2009 as well, so the swim should rock. This Florida boy will, however, once again wear his fullsuit, cap, booties and gloves if allowed. First got to get that pesky Louisville race out of the way. Train safe. |
