show me where I specifically said I bike to the grocery store. If I need something specific , I will bike out. The end goal is human powered transport.  Driving to a location with exception of swimming, to perform the act of human transport just defeats the purpose.

How about I drive to a run/bike location because it's safer for me to transport my kids that way... you have kids right? So you know what I am talking about then.

I always drop the kids off at the pool before a training session.

I call it "releasing the hostages".

My wife and her kids and I came up with holiday themed euphemisms for different times of the year;

Dropping presents down the chimney

Setting off some fire works

Hiding some Easter eggs

Leaving some flowers for my Valentine

There's some trick or treaters at the back door

Visting with the browns

Talking to a man about a dog

Doing my thinking

droping bombs like hiroshima

And yes, I'll drive the 20mins to go run 7mi w/ the guys. Or drive 30mins to the park and ride 3hrs. Seems to not bother me too much.

So my daughter says, "I'm going to take a doody".  My wife and I nearly fall on the floor laughing.  My daughter exclaims, "There is nothing funny about taking a doody!!!"

What were we talking about?

I'd bike to where I run but currently I'm waiting for my pet seal to mature enough so I can fabricate another seat for the bike.   In the meantime it's the cummins turbo diesel on the 140 mile trip.

No it's not, but I think I see where you're confusion is coming from now.  The end goal of riding for me is to have fun, and get better at triathlons.  Neither of which is aided by riding from my house.

DanielG - 2011-03-10 11:59 AM Perhaps I'm slow but why does it matter to you at all? They're doing something to better themselves. All else is gravy.

Reduce emissions, you are also wasting time. If you are driving an hour to bike an hour.... you have lost 2 hours of your life.

As for getting hit by a car, preplan your route, and obey traffic signals... Most likely the place you are going to will also have hazards

WAIT? So hours in the car don't count as training?

1. I'd love to see you come to my house and try to bike to the grocery store.  Or even walk, for that matter.  Really, it's probably the most unsafe thing I can think of.  My state is incredibly bike/pedestrian unfriendly (we went from 47th to 40th last year for bike safety...).  The mayor of our city said that there was no need for pedestrian/bike lanes.  It's that bad.  We can't all live in a super bike-able place.  Instead of calling strangers out on the internet, you should feel lucky that you have the ability to choose your method of transportation.

2.  That's the most interesting use of the term "functional fitness" I've ever seen.

trileelee - 2011-03-10 12:56 PM considering the 20 mile stretch from where i live to where i drive to ride is a 60 mph single lane highway, full of raging hungover students texting and driving, and crazy 18 wheelers, i think i'll prioritize my life over the few gallons of gas i'm spending and keep driving...

surely there are side roads to get there too...

I will allow one justification, if you live in a snowed out area and are driving 100 miles to a location with rideable conditions you are pardoned...

holland may have more dedicated cycle lanes, but here there a cities with good routes/infrastructure, take socal.

Now this maybe conterversial , but also we can show some of these drunk drivers who live in close proximity to a city that biking out to the bar and back might be a safer-cost effective-sobering alternative, pending mass adoption

Where to start...

1)  Riding a bike while intoxicated, in California, is illegal.  You can get a DUI for riding a bike while drunk.

2)  As a guy who lives in the San Fernando Valley in LA, the only way to get in a ride of 3+ hours without stopping every quarter mile at an intersectoin is to drive to a less congested area.  Just because there is a bike lane available to me, does not mean it's an appropriate route for triathlon training.  Last I can recall, you don't stop at traffic lights during a race.

3)  Technically, driving a car to a starting point isn't training.  Riding once you get there is training...and once you're riding, how is that wasteful?  Don't you mean Wasteful Commuting?  If so, we're wasteful every time we get in a car.  After all, where do you go in a car that is truly justified?  We can work from home, walk to the store, nobody really NEEDS to travel more than 5 miles from their house if we want to get all judgemental and irrational about this.

4)  I will give you points on the running part.  I've thought about driving to a running spot, and can't really justify that, but....

5)  I retract that comment on the basis of spite, and will drive to a location this evening and run.  I'll be sure to drive at least twice as long as I run...in each direction.  And, before I drive home, I'll drink a fifth of Jack, just for good measure.

6)  Thank you for the fun diversion from work.  I was wondeirng what I was going to do until 5:00.

wait.... why not run or bike to the swimming location... I'm confused.....

I like to swim to my biking location.  The extra drag fom the bike in the water makes me faster on race day.

And Derek, stop being such a moderator party pooper

ooh!  then i don't have to worry about the age-old debate about whether or not it's ok to pee the bike!  i can pee the bike WHILE i'm swimming!

Being from Alaska, an example of a snowed out area as referred to, there is no need for justification. I train from home or I drive to a training site. I feel motivated by location and a change of scenery.

I don't have an opinion about the drinking and biking. On a different note-- As the only person I know to road kill a bird on a mountain bike, I can state-- Grouse goes great with a glass of wine. After biking of course.

I like to grab 3 friends, throw our bikes onto the back of the 4runner (two hitch mount racks connected to each other, the kind where you set the bike on top and it holds on by the wheels, we call it the whale-tail), take a two hour road trip and ride a metric century.

...but it's okay because we carpooled, right?
