I am in for this as well! Yipee!

It will technically be my second full as I am doing IMCDA 5ish weeks before.  I am not very smart.  This will be just for fun though.

I'm sick, have not done much since last Monday.  I feel like I'm taking such a huge step backwards....just walking the dog is exhausting!

Take Careof yourself.  No sense in coming back until you are well and rested.  At least you getting it early rather than later, which maybe the future for the rest of us.  I remember getting sick at this time last year.  I ran a Half-Marathon with a slight chest cold (big mistake as it was ice and snow the entire run) and I was sick for at least 2 weeks after.

I creeped on everyone's logs (except Abbie because yours are blocked Smile)  Looks like everyone is moving along nicely!  Brian-you are so consistent!  I am jealous of your discipline!  I am slowly but surely going to start getting back on track.  Knee felt like crap all day, but oddly enough it didn't hurt at all during my baby run (2 miles).  Going to get in the pool later and see how that feels.  Doctor says to swim with a knee brace on so hopefully that will help.

Really....swim with a knee brace. I find running with my knee brace really helps. I don't have issues with my knee when swimming. I have an offloader brace for osteoarthritis of my right medial (inside) knee area. Old football injury. My goal is to allow myself only one missed session each week for what ever reason, unless I am sick or injured. I try not to have that one be my long bike or run. Like tonight it is very foggy and below freezing so I am not going out on the road to run. I'll let that one go. I had a real productive and good run last evening. Two hour bike tomorrow on the trainer and hour run and swim on Sunday.

3 weeks into training for me now, still just trying to develop the habit. Achieved most of my workouts so pretty pleased with that. Not so pleased with a strained calf whilst running so have hit the bike in place of planned runs but hoping to try some gentle gentle running next week. I do enjoy seeing others posts and how its going.
Snow and ice on the East coast has meant i have been doing more Trainer bike rides than actually being outside.. ... booooo... but it does help to develop the mental challenge i guess..

Anyone got good plans for the weekend?

Amazing day for a bike ride. Rode 32 miles down the coast. Sun glistening on the water and Catalina island looked close enough to touch. If my knee wasn't nagging me I think I could have ridden all day. Anyone else have a nice day?

If you call crawling under the house looking for a dead mouse and pulling out old fiberglass insulation for 3 hrs., then spraying drywall texture in a bathroom I am remodeling and then riding two hours on a trainer watching Ghost Protocol and breaking in my new Adamo Road Saddle ( probably the best part of the day) fun then I had a marvelous day. : ). I am one tired puppy.I would rather do what you were doing. Tomorrow is not much better. Painting the bathroom, 1hr run and a 2500 yd swim workout.

Good job Brian, I got in a long ride Saturday , Sunday was supposed to be a long run but I ended up working on house stuff all day. It's a tough balance.

I'm jealous.  I thought about taking my bike out but then I looked outside and there is still ice and snow everywhere.  So I jumped on the trainer and thought about hitting my head on the wall as that could be more entertaining.  I did slip and fall on some ice running last night.  I am ready for the sun to come melt all of this crap away.

Haha!  You guys crack me up!  The crawling around under the house and working with fiberglass sounds amazing. As for ice and snow...ugh! Walked 10 miles with my friend yesterday so I felt a bit tight today,  (Crazy how hard it is to walk...running is way better!)  so a short 30 minute swim this morning felt great to loosen up the muscles.

I've added you as a friend....I had a stalker issue and it freaked me out so made my log private.

Not much to see on my log, being sick has crushed my training and not in a good way.  I haven't even been in the pool this year! Ugg

Good job folks those who are getting into their training and sorry to those like myself stuck to much indoor training.. yuck

I'm looking for some advice (and encouragement), my calf keeps on tightening on my runs, kinda feels like a cramp but i know its not and this will now be the second week of little to no running for me. I have replaced my run sessions with bike work but even though i know it is early days I am becoming slightly concerned as I do want to get the time in on the run.
Is there any suggestions as to remedies or other workouts to replicate run cardio (only so many indoor bike trainer rides i can handle in a week)?

Can you wear a compression sleeve? Foam roll?
Those are just band-aids, wonder what the root of the issue is?

I agree with Lisa that figuring out the cause of the problem is most important.  Have you changed your diet, terrain, shoes, etc?  I wonder why the sudden cramping.  It is important to figure out the cause so that you can get back to regular training.  However, in the meantime, I am now a firm believer in the foam roller.  It is REALLY helping to solve my knee pain.  Also, can you do pool running or does that cause the same type of cramping?  I hate the eliptical machine at the gym, but maybe do that instead of running for a little bit.

Besides figuring out the real problem, I recommend the AMT machine (different than an elliptical). I think it's maybe even a better workout than actually running. (I always add to this advice that I ran my marathon PR after exclusively rehabbing on the AMT the month before the race.)

I also recommend calf sleeves during the run and maybe after too.

I found that a monthly massage has helped a great deal for me. When I didn't do them it wasn't too much longer beyond a month and a half that I had some kind of calf injury. Massages and foam roller/trigger point has helped me tremendously to stay injury free (so far). I am doing them monthly until the race. Both times I hurt my calf it wasn't really an injury but my muscles were bound up and had big knots (Lesions) and neeed to be worked out. After the massage I was good to go in about a day or so.Good Luck and ask around for a good massage therapist.
