Wow, BigDH, thanks for the info on shoes.  I'm a real newbie and trying to learn fast.

If you have the budget I suggest buying lots. At least 2 pairs anyway, 3 would be better, more than 4 and I mean you are just being silly. The thing is, shoes are good for 600 miles for most people, less for some, more for others. I run in my shoes until they get holes, so they last a while. People wait until their shoes die before buying new ones. It just doesn't make sense. It is not like you only have one shirt or one pair of pants. Also, the less you run in shoes the more miles they last.

I got 1.5 miles in today.  Kim, I hope you had a nice day home on the couch!  That whole dog situation sounded rough...

As for shoes, I loved the Saucony Guide 3 - I think I went through 3 pairs of them (including 5 marathons).  I'm not crazy about the Guide 4 and then the 5 came out with the lower drop (8mm I think).  I was afraid to try them, but finally broke down and got a pair.  I don't have a ton of miles in them yet but they are OK...  I'd love to find something like the Guide 3s again that I can just keep buying and know that they will work instead of guessing (hoping?).  I think I'd like the Guide 5s if they had just a bit more cushioning in the forefoot - I've read that the Guide6 may have addressed that.

I do agree with the buy multiple shoe philosophy!  I have 3 different pairs right now that I wear regularly plus my Zoots that I pretty much only race short stuff in.

Heading out for a trail run after work and I am hoping we get before dark. I definitely forgot my head lamp.

I also have a couple pairs. I've been running in the Brooks Adrenaline shoes for 13 years and have loved them (except for the 8s, those were horrid). I just retired a pair a month ago, have two road pairs and one trail pair (the GTX) currently in use . I like having multiple pairs if only because I can buy up a bunch on sale and save money. Plus I have heard the new Adrenaline 12s are not good. The last time I switched to a different brand with a lower arch and was still getting half dollar size blisters when I stopped using them after 100 miles.

I tend to retire mine around 400 miles. That's when my hips, knees and ankles start to get really sore.

Did about 1.5miles on Day 5 in about 12 minutes. That may seem slow for most of you, but for a guy weighing in at 235 with around 17% body fat, it's not too shabby. It's also an improvement for me. A year ago, I would have been hard pressed run 1.5miles in under 15 minutes!

May wedge in 2 miles later. On the other hand, I was on my feet for almost 7 hours straight today; my dogs are barkin'! LOL

I have six pairs of running shoes, two of which (Saucony Ignition) are semi-retired. One pair of Zoots for tri racing. Two pairs of Saucony Cohesion 5 (cheap, but effective for every day running), and a pair of Saucony Grid Profile for short quicker runs.

I like Darren's idea of changing it up. I probably don't do that enough. I rotate the two pairs of workhorse shoes and use the Zoots once a week or so during tri season. I should probably rotate the Grid Profiles in more often.

I buy my everyday running shoes in the same style and color. That way my family doesn't figure out exactly how many pairs of shoes I have. I am teased enough as it is.

Great job! I still can't go out and just run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes, and I am little. Well, short anyway. Wink

Day 5, yesterday, found a solid 4.2 miles completed in 48 minutes.  Not great, but not horrible.

I want to work more on being able to go, sans walking, for more and more miles.  I do have aspirations to do a 140.6 eventually.  Surely, speed will come as I become more capable of going longer.

As for Day 6... I'm calling it good to go.  I've walked up and down so many stairs and climbed up and down a 10' ladder twice an hour for the last 4 hours and have another 3 hours to do it again.  I think it counts.  :-)

I'm hoping I can do 5 miles tomorrow along with a nice 20 mile brick.

1 easy mile today. I just hope my body can handle running everyday. And that I have the control to keep it easy on "off days." Has it already been a week??

Got my 1 mile in today after 45 minutes of hill work on the bike.  Got a 5 mile race tomorrow but I won't be racing, just using it as a training run.

Did just over 4 miles this morning with the fiance. It was pretty slow, but hopefully smart. My piriformis is acting up, so it'll be another slow single mile day for me tomorrow.

Friday is normally my day off but I ran my mile in the dark this morning!  I've never done that before.  In the summer when it's light early I often run in the morning before work, but I live out in the country with no street lights so I don't normally run in the dark (though I have occasionally gone into town to run at night).

Anway, I put on every piece of reflective gear that I could find, clipped a light on my hat, and carried a flashlight.  After all of that, I didn't see a single car until I was back into my driveway!  I got barked at by the neighbor's dog and caught a faint whiff of skunk, but all in all it was a pretty uneventful mile!

Good for you!! Running in the dark scares me, especially around here with animals. Ran most of this morning without my headlamp on (when on paths) because of the moon, which was glorious. Though when I almost got run over by a biker in all black and no light, I regretted having it turned off. I may have screamed...
