Extreme Veteran 2263 Ridgeland, Mississippi | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE 2400 more down. Main set today was 8x200. I managed to come in at 2:44-47 for each one. Not bad for getting back into it. Total is now at 16,500. Edited by msteiner 2014-02-12 8:27 AM |

I'm on scy. 1:12 scm would be an off the block sprint. There was a big kickset in there, so probably would have been closer to 1:15 on a more normal set. 1:24-ish in scm? One of the pools may switch it up in the coming weeks, so could find out. Last year they did it because one of the bulkhead anchor points for scy was messed up. |

Maybe we need to start a sub 1:00 / 100 yds challenge! |

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE Had 6 1:11 splits in my last 1500. Gotta get that under control! First 100 was too quick though 1:03 felt easy but took something out of me by the 800 mark. |

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE Nope, 4 Sessions in 4 days. Not swimming any 10 single sessions any time soon. Too much of any over reach for me now. I would rather do a block of 4-5 sessions of 5-6 k each and recover between sessions rather than break myself on one day. Swam 3k tonight. Main set was 40x 50 @45 |

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE I will most definitely be starting from the blocks. My next meet is in 6 weeks. 100 Fly comes after the 1500 but I will have a decent break between them to recover. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE Relieved to hear that. I haven't done 10K at once since our swim club fundraiser days. Did it a couple times as a continuous swim, mainly as an attention-getter. Not sure it would count by OWS rules--I would snack on bananas that the coach floated me on a kickboard! Most of my workouts are about 3000m, occasionally close to 3500 on Saturdays if I feel good. I don't think I've done more than 4,000m since age 16. I don't do full ironman so just don't see the need; anyway am confident I could finish an IM swim if I didn't get kicked in the head! 'Nother 3000 meters down tonight. I'll never understand my body--was doing 100's faster with 5 seconds rest than with 15. I think it just takes me forever to get going. On the plus side, our pool temp is now back to a balmy 27. Count me out of the 60 second challenge (or 66 for meters, or whatever). Only steroids would get me there. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE With the talk of the 1:00 for a 100, been starting to wonder what would be a good speed challenge to tie in with the origin of this thread? Could help quite a bit in keeping up the quality of the workouts being done. Bike & run improvements can happen by just doing more. Swim can, but much more often it's necessary to make it happen more directly than that due to the more technical nature of it. Could help in the motivation to push and learn how to work sets better. |

Main set was 40x 50 @45 That makes sense, and is good to remember. Curious what type of events or part of development you may put in blocks like that before. Thinking ahead to some later season events. One has a ~4k swim in it and might do another that's a 5k only. The short set would be good to remember as well. Swap scm to scy and it'd fit well for me, coming in mid to high 30's. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE I think it will be hard due to men/women and so many different ability levels.60 seconds/100 yards might be a breeze for Simpsonbo, but ridiculous for me (my best since 40 is 83 for 100m). Plus would we make it a sprint or distance challenge? In my mind, a 500m, 1000m or 1500m time trial is a much better indication of fitness for the events I do than an all-out 100, and I don't think the training to improve my sprint times, except perhaps for technique work, would help much for my races. Yeah, those distances would better indicate fitness for what we're looking at. The basic idea of what I was going for was to help emphasize getting faster. Finding something shorter than those to help keep the idea of trying to actually go faster. Biking & running improvements can come just by doing more and simply going out and doing them. Design can and does help things come along more quickly, but going and and doing them can still take someone quite a ways. As you know, swimming doesn't really have that. It's vital to work on going faster as speed improvements don't just sort of happen. One has to make them happen. So a yardage challenge such as this is a helpful tool, was thinking that it may also help to have some sort of speed thing in there to help focus on set design & execution. Helping to keep from just throwing a bunch of yards at things without minding the particulars too much. I didn't actually mean for a 100 specifically, but more thinking out loud about the idea in general and the topic of 100 speed triggered that. Maybe watch 200 speed more? And watch how this is going within the context of training for longer events, not sprint training. |

Extreme Veteran 2263 Ridgeland, Mississippi | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE 2600 more yards for 19,100. Re: Speed challenge. You need to make a way to not have a hard set time for the goal. Maybe do an improvement comparison in 100 or 200 time, since speed is the focus. Do a 100/200 max effort this month, and then try again in May after the challenge to see how much of an improvement is made. Saying "sub 1:00/100" really isolates who can be involved. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE After all the weather-related posts and coverage this week, have to say this is one time of the year I'm glad to be in Vietnam. I'll save the whining for when March and April, when it's hotter than h.... Anyway, that doesn't affect swimming much--just makes the pool more appealing. Several times last year, I did a 4000m workout, just as an excuse to be in the water longer! Back when I had a few buddies who did tri and trained with me on Saturdays (they've since moved on to other jobs), we once spent the whole afternoon in the pool, between workout and sitting around talking! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE Maybe halfway there at 41,850m (3200m today). I did the previously mentioned IM workout again. (Repeating workouts for a few weeks is a habit of mine. I always feel like it takes my body a few times to really "get" them and fully benefit.) Okay, I have a sick sense of fun, but I liked it. I like fly, as long as I can breathe. So much of tri training is long sets of freestyle, and I get bored! Remember, "master's swim" here consists of me, myself, and I! Bo and other fish types, do not laugh--very pleased with myself for breaking the 10 minute "barrier" on the 500m IM's--last week they were in the 10:05-10:20 range (didn't record exact time); this week 10:04, 10:03, 9:57. Plus I was able to maintain the same DPS for the fly for every length of each 100--progress in my case. Going to re-do the "epic fail" 3X 500 free workout next Saturday when the waters are calm with no HS kids there, maybe can put the pace clock at the end of my lane then so I can actually see it to pace. Just not in a freestyle mood today. |

1300 | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE Originally posted by msteinerYou need to make a way to not have a hard set time for the goal. I was thinking about this after finally being able to get back to the pool last night Everyone who wants to do it can have their own baseline. So if this week you get your time for a 100 that will be what you work off and set yourself a goal. I did it last night a it showed just how out of shape I am. |

Had only made 100 straight fly once before (and was ready to drop dead). No idea on time and certainly none on DPS. Some things can be just about getting there. Nice going! Did 4,300 last night. A few hundreds in the warm-up, but everything else was shorter. A few 75's throughout, all else was a mix of 50's and 25's. Really working on getting the feel back. Within the workout it really seemed to make a difference. Will see how it goes today. Also had 1200 kicking spread throughout. Some udk in that, seem to be getting a better handle on it. Not killing me so much. |
