Hehe, yah, I always wondered how everyone had so many posts.  Ok, so I owe you guys 4 after work today.  I just couldn't do it last night.  So 4 tonight, and then I have a long run of 14 tomorrow.

I like those tips - especially on the side stitch thing.  Sometimes I just have to slow down and breathe deeply and try to work it out.

Here's a tip i wish I had a few months ago... I always ran slow as dirt, and was hating my run until I joined the October Challenge... Then someone suggested I alter my breathing cadence... I did. Went from a in on two steps out on two over to in on four, out on four... Suddenly my run length doubled, stitches went away, and my run time went from 10+ minutes to 6-8 minute miles...

Made all the Diff in the world!!!

That's way interesting - is there some science behind that, or is it a mind over matter thing? I am going to try that on my run tomorrow (gonna run 4 - longest I have gone so far).

OK so there are two different things here to look at, endurance and power for the ability to complete the distance, and leg speed coupled with endurance to pick up the pace.

This was awesome! Thanks so much- its really helpful for someone just to lay out all the "rules" like this- usually triathletes are good bikers/runners and swimming is their draw...I'm the opposite and appreciate the help!

When you get a stitch, try to breath as deeply as you can, force the breath out as well. one of my buddies swears by breathing from his belly when he gets a stitch, apparently he doesn't have to even slow his pace, doesn't seem to work for me though something like inhaling into you belly and pushing all the muscles there out.

My uncle swears by that method, He used to run between 5 and 6min/mile so he's always been my running consultant.

For another tip, more then worrying about what workout you are doing as you get used to running just make sure every time you run you go out for at least 20 minutes. Don't worry about distance or pace just make sure you get the time in and it will do wonders.

For me consistency is the key, I really started staying consistent before I got hurt last spring and I got my pace under 7's. Even the days I was tired and didn't feel like running I would get out and maybe just go slow. The days I felt good I pushed a little. Just make sure you are getting out there.

Remember not everyone speeds up as fast as others and the folks you see running under 7's have probably been running a few years. I've been running for about 8 years now.

And when you don't run think how good you'll feel afterward that you went out and did it.

It's the body using less energy to breath. It is also about your personal rythmn. Friend of mine breaths at three's instead of fours...

I hit a point where the four is a perfect cadence with my feet, my arm motion etc.. One day I was running and realized that everything was in perfect sync.. Definitely a Zen moment.

Here's a tip i wish I had a few months ago... I always ran slow as dirt, and was hating my run until I joined the October Challenge... Then someone suggested I alter my breathing cadence... I did. Wow!! There is a lot of great advice on this thread!! I don't really do any speed work except for sometimes running harder up hills when I'm in the mood. In 2007 I improved my 5K and 10k PR's substantially, and I think the main reason for my improvement is I was very consistent. Every week I did 2 short runs and 1 longer run. Right now I'm trying to build my mileage back up since I wasn't able to run much in December, and I have a half mary the first week in March, but maybe I will add some speed training in the Spring.

Did my first long run in a while this morning, and I was very pleasantly surprised with how good I felt, and my pace was about 45 seconds better than my long runs from a year ago.

As far as Hazmaster's post is concerned, I'm new to these challenges, so I don't know about the "trash talk". I don't think I'm really good at trash talk, anyway

Keep up the good work everybody!!!

Anthony

We didn't lower or goals to meet them early. Trash talking 5 days in wow a little premature hope your significant other doesn't mind that bad habit you have.

Aren't you the one everyone quotes as saying you wish you were a GIRL???

Hi Anthony!

Re trash talk - take your pick:
a) You can read it (and laugh).
b) You can read it and reply. Thereby stirring up even more trash talk. (Which you can then read and laugh at.)
c) You can chose to bypass it and continue talking about other things.

It's all good.

(I did kind of figure it was just a matter of time until someone posted a picture of scrambled eggs on your thread though. LOL)

As for there being great advice on this thread -- yes, there is! One of the things that I've found with the challenges is that you can really get some great ideas and advice from your teammates. (They're also really good at keeping you motivated.) That's why I love these challenges so much.

Happy running!

Hey guys...great info on pace in here.  One of these days (probably more like years at this rate) I'll remember the info when I'm finally ready to worry about going faster as opposed to going longer.

I had to skip my run today.  On Thursday when I was running I got a really bad burning feeling in my lower left leg on the outside of my calf above my ankle, but after the run it felt perfectly fine so I forgot about it.  Then last night while at the firehouse I went up on my toes to get something off the top bunk and it started hurting in that area again.  It didn't feel like I pulled anything last night.  It hurts a little bit (like a 1 or 2 out of 10) most of the time and goes up to maybe a 4 or 5 when I go up on my toes.  I figured it was better not to risk the run today and take the rest day.  I don't run again until Tuesday so I should be fine by then if I ice it a bit and take it easy.

So, I've only got 4.11 miles in for this first week (15%).  I'll have to add a little mileage on to a few other runs to make up for today's missed run, but no biggie.  Guess I'm living up to our team name huh?

Great to see all the high percentages on the spreadsheet so far.  Go Scrambled Legs!

If anyone cannot see or access the excel table please let me know and we will work out a method for keeping it up to date.

Sunday evening is the cut off for mileage for this week, so make sure to get out there an update those numbers!!!

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the challenge, posting, numbers, or as you can see to the crew here for running tips....
