Subject: RE: #57 - I Need a Drink - Gin and TANic grdavison - 2008-11-03 11:44 AM cami bee - 2008-11-03 8:40 AM wurkit_gurl - 2008-11-03 10:28 AM That's how my mom sings. She apparently only knows one line or two of popular songs from the 70s, and various showtunes, and sings just the one line, over and over, with weird pauses between them. And she has about a 3-note range. It's unbearable. At least my sister, who doesn't sing well either, knows she is bad (my sister, I mean, not my mom), so when she sings, it's more of a joke. That's a bit unfortunate. I have this friend and she has this really irritating habit (to me anyway) or singing during the rest of the song and then started the versus again once the rest is over. What kills me is when I'm singing a song on my own and then she joins in and starts doing the 'singing during the rest' thing. The challenge is that she's really sensitive about her musical ability (i.e. she feels it should be appreciated more), so you really can't say anything to her about it. I know it's a small thing, but it kind of drives me nuts. My mom is the worst.... totally tone deaf and trys to sing really loudly at church..... the best is that she sings to the lyrics right just to the wrong song.... think of someone singing Row your boat to twinkle twinkle ... There is a guy in church on Sunday nights, who sings along REALLY loudly and holds every note until the last possible second. It's so weird. He gets a lot of strange looks. When a group sings together, esp. a familiar song that everyone knows, the entire group generally follows the same rhythms and cut-offs. So everyone else has stopped singing and this guy is still holding the note. Edited by wurkit_gurl 2008-11-03 10:48 AM |

I sing in choir or other specific performance, in church and sometimes will do karaoke, but other than that, I don't. Only tangentially related, but it's on my mind. My cousin is getting married on May 2nd. She was basically my sister growing up. I'm one of her bridesmaids (not maid of honor because I'm way too far away to help). She also wants me to play viola during the ceremony - like when she does the candle thing. I haven't been practicing at all for about two years. I'm freaked out. I'd like to say no, but I also want to do it for her. Fun stuff. |

May 2nd is long enough that you could probably brush up. Though yeah it's always awkward. |

My mom is all sad that she doesn't have any actual musical ability and if you say anything, she'll start in on how she's so sad that she never got to learn an instrument or take music lessons, blah blah blah as a kid. I am actually a good, trained musician and I will not wander around randomly singing, because I feel that it's generally annoying to people. I also don't sing on command - that was the favorite thing for people to ask me in grad school - ick. I sing in choir or other specific performance, in church and sometimes will do karaoke, but other than that, I don't. I think that it would be easier to learn to play an instrument at a decent level than to learn to sing, if you had little musical talent. With an instrument if you can count you have some chance of producing a decent tone, but if you can't produce a pleasing vocal tone, I'm not sure how much could be done about that. Of course, it might be odd to see people walking around with violins and piccolos just so that they could have the opportunity to express themselves musically. |

Of course, it might be odd to see people walking around with violins and piccolos just so that they could have the opportunity to express themselves musically. That depends on the instrument. Piano, yeah, I think pretty much anyone can get decent tone because all you have to do is push the key. With strings, it depends on how you pull the bow and a lot of other factors. I've only ever played violin, viola, and piano, so that's the extent of my experience. I'm sure other instruments are just as hard. |

It's less nerve wracking when you're part of a group. I've played solo in church a few times, but it's been years. I'm sure I can do it. I just have to have enough confidence in myself to be able to do it well. |

Singing is definitely more of a case of "you either have it or you don't". Sure, inherent musical ability separates the mediocre instrumentalists from the fantastic ones, but just about anyone can learn basics on the piano or the guitar - the two easiest instruments to learn (and if you know piano, learning guitar is very easy - both C instruments). But vocal talent is something you're born with. It can be coached, but not taught. Edited by wurkit_gurl 2008-11-03 10:55 AM |

Yes, I would think that certain instruments are harder to learn to play than others. I had a friend with quite a bit of music talent (both vocal and instrumental) that decided to learn the cello. She found the first few years pretty awkward and frustrating, but she stuck with it and is having better luck now (I think). |
