Now that most of us are heading into taper I have a question.  What training plan did you use? What did you like about it? Any dislikes? Would you use the plan again?

I'm using a plan through Multisports.com. It's a 24 week plan that follows a pattern of 2 week build and 1 week recovery. The plan is bike and run heavy but more swims are workable into the program.

I like the plan because there are "required" workouts and optional workouts allowing you to customize the volume to your needs. The plan comes with an online Q&A with the coaches regarding all aspects of IM training and race prep.

The only thing I dislike about the program is that it is not customized specifically to my needs.

I followed the plan my coach gave me every week or few weeks. I am definitely continuing to use her again as I pursue shorter course races next year. Everything was customized as I needed it week-by-week and she's been an invaluable resource for me. I don't really have any complaints! At this point I need to trust in the process and that I'm ready, no matter what typical taper feelings have me flipping out just a smidge

I'm on the BT 20 week plan.  My brother (2x finisher) used this plan for his first IM and recommended it to me.  It's a well designed plan and I definitely feel prepared for race day other than all the normal butterflies and unknowns.  I was able to skip or reschedule a few workouts as needed without any problems.  During training I only did one official tri, a sprint, a few weeks into the plan, but there are days on the plan where he suggests that you can put in a race.  I do however wish the plan included a few long weekend swims, as this would be the only time I would have had to get into open water.

To answer the posed question of IM training plans... my original plan was derived from the book "Going Long".  This intermediate plan seemed pretty good for me but, I threw it out when other circumstances (injury) forced me to stop training.  Once back in the saddle, I created my own plan that was an accelerated version of my original.  I gambled by ramping up much quicker than I would normally advise and avoiding the swim to let my shoulders and back recover some more. In general, I would recommend the book and its example plans.

I do tweek workouts most every week to minimize impact on my family and job.

jkholden - 2009-11-06 12:35 PM Brittany (TexasMPGal) sure has had a lot of burdens to deal with going into her first IM. She obviously has her priorities in order and I can't wait to meet her in AZ. She is one amazing young lady.

Agreed, I have yet to meet Brittany, but look forward to it in AZ. And everyone else too...

You folks are too nice...I am SO excited to meet y'all.
Happy training this weekend, and be safe.  I have a long ride tomorrow which I'm going to trainer it--it'll be a beautiful day, but I have my troopers on short recall, so I have to be on short recall too. It'll be character building! Then a long run on Sunday---due to the week's craziness, that will be the bulk of my workouts. Oh well!

A big thank you for your service and my prayers for your "guys" in Texas...  Hope to meet you at IMAZ...  I'd say see you at the finish line, but I have an idea that you will be done, showered and in bed before I get there!! My training plan for my past (2) HIMs came from Triathlete magazine and I had a coach to feed me weekly training plans for the IM..  AND.....  I had a 1 mile race pace swim day and was excited to do that in 42:45..  That's an accomplishment for me...

I used a coach for this, my first, IM, as well as the whole season. I started training at summer's end 2008. I chose a coach that didn't mind hand-holding a noob to long course becasue of all the little things, like wheels, clothes, bike, training, etc was difficult to manage.

I am glad I did so, especially for all the sports psychology, and he's done well. If I blow up during IMAZ, it'll be because I didn't follow his plan and reverted to my own short course stupidity.

I'm half way through a 4hr trainer ride right now.  Stupid stormy weather.  It may become a 3hr ride b/c my azz can't handle that long without being outside.  Thus this break at the half way point.

How is everyone's weekend?

I think I would go insane if I was on my trainer for 4 hours... I guess that's why I moved to AZ I'm originally from Seattle and I can't imagine training there other than the summer months!

OK, for all of you wondering about the course profile and elevation, here you go. This was my ride this morning. 112 miles, a full 3 laps of the course but starting at the turnaround. Ignore the initial down hill and uphill at the start and at the end, that's beyond the course. Also, I turned around at Rio Salado and Scottsdale Rd, which is about 1/2 mile short of Mill Ave. where the actual turnaround is and on the third loop, I turned around early at McKellips and Hayden. Otherwise, that's what it looks like.

So the total amount of climbing on one of the "out" segment of the bike course is ~300 feet? The worst being in the last 7-8 miles?

I rode the course today too - my first time doing the full loop (I rode out on the Beeline in March and kept going, then came back via Bush Hwy). For one thing I know my bike fitness has improved significantly since March - I'm still not a strong rider compared to my running - but I just have to say wow! We don't make roads that flat or smooth at home I guess all the riding I've done back in California will have made me strong for this course becuase I did ~2 loops at a faster average pace than what I do at home. I only really felt like I was climbing the last 3-3.5 miles before the Shea turnaround and honestly they flew by - I spun really easy (and not particularly fast) and was at the top before I knew it. The nice part is bombing down going the other way nice and fast (I don't have much of a weight advantage on downhills and even I hit ~28 mph). If the winds stay anything consistent to what they've been this week, we'll be in great shape too. So anyway, my long winded way of saying the course looked and felt great!!!!

I TOLD you all it wasn't a "hill".

However, don't count on the winds being as favorable as they were today. Today was perfect, but normally that headwind is a bit stiffer and doesn't shift like it did today more to the south.

I know, I wasn't complaining that the winds were lighter (though I didn't get out to ride till lunchtime so I got a bit more of the afternoon wind). It's been interesting to see them come from the south this week...if they shift back to north, well at least that ride back to town will be even swifter!

For sure, more flats than I get at home. And some false flats that aren't really. I figure I should have them all worked out by the 3rd loop on race day LOL

How about flat tires? Rumor has it there are lots of thorns on the road.

Oops, sorry.  I meant flat tires.  :-)  After Bryan's report of 5 of them the other day, that's been on my mind.  I have the most difficult time getting tires on and off my race wheels.

Oh duh, I'm slow, sorry. No, I didn't get any flats at all, despite a wonky rear tire (due to be changed before race day, suffice it to say I've worn it down a bit on the trainer the last few weeks). The only areas where I saw glass (in the bike lane) are parts of the course where we'll be riding on the road and not the shoulder.

I was fine today as well and only passed one rider changing a tube. My bad day last week was just a bad day for me. It happens. And it was really on 3 flats due to thorns, the other two were a bad tube and a pinch flat. They usuually will clean the raod up before the race, but it won't matter as we will have the actual road to ride in, which is so smooth and sweet with the new asphalt.

i went out and bought the special tubes mentioned above. they were 8$ as opposed to 5$ and they aren't that much heavier. meant to help prevent against flats so i figured it was worth it.
