I came to some conclusions about my training and effort today, the whole thing is in my blog--long story short, I have noticed that I am not really trying, in training or racing--has anyone else had this issue, where you basically say, "well, I can do the distance, that's what matters, so speed really doesn't make a difference."--and you end up not pushing yourself? Or is it just me? Ah well, I should not dwell on it too much and just go.

First off, I think that everyone has times that they just want to get the workout over with -- whether that is the last bit of a ride home or a workout that they just aren't in the mood for.  Don't let this feeling get you down.  It could be a matter of goal setting or fatigue or some other factor.

Next question:  How are you judging your effort?  RPE?  Heart rate?  Do you have a heart rate monitor and if so, have you done a field test to determine your zones?

As for my bike, it has decided that when in a certain gear, to suddenly switch to a lighter gear-and then back--without my permission...This did force me to ride the majority of my route in a harder gear--so a more intense workout in that...but still...I guess I will be springing for a tune up this month...>sigh<

Yeah, a tune up is in order.  Do you ever clean your drivetrain?  If you clean your chain and the little wheels in the rear derailleur that may help you out between now and tune up time.  If the derailleur gets gunked up, the shifting is not happy at all.

bcraht - 2012-06-05 10:37 PM Ok, bike fit done.  After much questioning and walking/standing/peddling, etc, saddle went up, bars went down, cleats got moved back and out.  It was suggested that I get some narrower bars, but will hold off on that for now.  Definitely could feel the difference/better with regards to my left foot reaching on the downstroke.  Now it just needs to stop raining so I can get out and test everything out!Yell

Good news on the bike fit!  (and I hear you on the rain)

I hear you on the rain, started raining yesterday and hasn't stopped, and my top requires two people to put on so I can't go anywhere, like the pool, so instead of training I used the day to make salted caramel, praline bacon and grilled margahreita pizza.  So yeah I gotta get on the trainer today and a run in the rain with the pup will be in order.

My plan calls for a 2:45 ride into a 30 min run for a sprint plan, does that sound a bit long of a ride to anyone else? (zone 2 through first 2 hours then end in zone 4 HRM)  Going to watch the Dark Knight and when it is over I'll get off the bike and run.

As for those shoes...  I'm not fashionable at all.  I tend to go dark colors or white although I do bust out my yellow HIM shirt for morning training runs.

Good luck on the relay HIM, I really enjoyed mine kind of fun racing with others.

I totally forgot this bit from my HIM.  My friend being an awesome cyclist was out there when she happened upon Macca who said "how are you going - didn't we meet yesterday?"

They rode along together and she said would you mind if I passed you - go ahead said Macca.

Then he passed her and she said "hey could i draft you?"  Macca's reply "sure, hop on"

She drafted for a few km - when passed by a draft busting official she yelled "HEY I'M DRAFTING MACCA!"

They laughed

See how awesome he is!

That's so awesome!! I love our sport.

Yum!! That sounds awesome!  Too bad Pennsylvania and the Carolinas are so far apart...wait, that might be a good thing!  Enjoy your run in the rain with your pup.  Running in the rain (as long as it isn't torrential or cold) is very soothing.

Here's a big thanks to Salty for posting the run tips a whole buncha pages back.  They went something like: Hips forward, stand tall.  Drive with your knees.  Short strides, keep foot parallel.  I've been trying to do these things during my runs, as well as picturing your profile pic as I run to remind me of body position.  I'm trying to get away from my 90-year-old-with-a-walker-shuffle/elephant gait.

I've really enjoyed being part of the manatees, what a great group of knowledgeable, supportive, talented people!

Hey Janyne--I generally use RPE--I don't have a heart rate monitor. I had noticed how I was doing on my workouts just through that fact that with all of them over the last month, it was my mental focus of "just get through it"--I wasn't trying to actually improve at all, and in some cases, I would just not do them. Don't get me wrong, there has been improvement overall, but it is MINIMAL. I KNOW I can do better--I proved that to myself yesterday. I don't plan on going so hard that I hurt myself, I just am going to not let myself do a 'half-a**ed' workout anymore.

As for the bike, I did recently clean it, as it had been not shifting well to a lighter gear, but that only happened when I actively shifted--it wasn't doing it by itself! hm...maybe its possessed. Tongue out I will be looking into a tune up on my next weekend.

Today's plan: weed eat my chosen garden space, get the raised planter bed (1st one of 4), laundry, and an OWS--hopefully with Clint...

WOW that hurt (in a good way), chopped about 45 min off the trainer ride for a solid 2 hrs, 45 min trainer =1hour road right?  Got the run in which is good, for me and the pup.

Kate- I did all my training last year on RPE and I don't think I could do RPE all that well...  I'd burn out or go too fast all the time and I've become a big fan of the HRM.  Just my .02 I know it is a choice type of thing but you might be surprised that you are feeling like you are forcing yourself because you are going to hard when you don't mean to.  With my HRM same workouts seemed easier, they were, and I wasn't killing myself to get them all in I look forward to them much more now.

It is cool that you can feel the difference already. I hope you get some T.I.T.S and see a comfort increase. Good luck on the rain, it has been threatening here all day. I rode home, but bailed at the 2/3 mark after turning a corner an seeing a wall of haze in the distance. It looked ominous, and I already knew that I had to get back to work, so I figured I'd be cautious. And that got me safely back to work, which is where I sit now.
