There is a sprint coming up in a month that I'd like to do, but it's a reverse. My fear is the swim and I liked getting it out of the way (in my long and distinguished tri career of one whole sprint)...not ending on it. Then again it's a sprint...big deal. Any thoughts? This sounds AWESOME...I didn't know they did these. I want to do a reverse IM with a 5 mile swim...then I would stand a good chance to podium. |

There is a sprint tri in Denver called the "My Way or the Tri Way" in which you pick the order in which you do the segments. I'd like to do it sometime, but I'd probably either do s/b/r or r/b/s. Pool or lake swim? My first was a reverse so I have a perverse fondness of them (among other things). One way to look at it is if you really rev it up on the bike and run, it's going to be a real relief to get into that cool water, even if you have to swim in it! Also, if you enjoy triathlon generally, it's good to get experience wherever you can, and if the race is local/reasonable ... DOOOOO EEEEEEET P.S. Of course that's goody as in, evil twinkle in the eye, rubbing hands together OH GOODY |

I was going to do my 8.4 mile route - then decided at the last second to add in the 1.4 miles to hit double digits today. This mean a 1350' drop @ 8% grade, followed by a flat then a 650' drop @ 8% grade. All fine and dandy until I had to turn around and run up them. Pretty sure I'm heading to the pool in a 1/2 hour. Can't wait to try a modified stroke!! All this swim talk has me so revved up to swim. Let us know how the modified stroke goes - remember in your mind aim wide and you'll end up just where you should be! I really concentrated on my stroke in the OWS last night - and remembered Coach Johnny's words - if it's choppy you got to be aggressive JoJo, don't be a victim! I still got turned over a couple of times but I channelled my inner 10 year old self and enjoyed the ride!
I'm stoked! I shaved 1 stroke per lap (16 to 15) with the first modification. It felt like I was reaching out so wide, but now that I see the video I realize I wasn't. I'm not crossing center now and I minimized the "S" underwater. I still have to practice it, a lot, because when I picked up the pace - I went back to old habits, but I am sold on no more "S" pull. I did notice that tonight my kick looked a bit sloppy - but I think that is due to the 10 miles I ran right before swimming and the fact I was focussing on my stroke. Without further adieu: Upper body and arms are nigh perfect. Still has the occassional scissor kick after breathing. Knees flex a bit too much. The kick is powered by the hips and buttock. Over all this is very good form. Thank you for the feedback... did you mean "near" perfect? The kick is HORRIBLE, with a capital "H"...and the knees are flexing WAY too much, not "a bit" too much.. Nigh: O.E-- near, close by, almost. Please excuse my use of the old words. Have to justify this here inglish degreee...... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry that I've been MIA for almost 8 pages!!! Read up on most of it though and good to see everyone getting in step for their upcoming tris. It's kind of crazy for me to think that many of you are only a few months away from yours while I have to wait until at least mid June to get one in! Anyways I've been traveling for work and our plane broke down just about everywhere possible so long days and nights mean very little training until last night. A reverse tri sounds like fun but I'd be worried about over doing it on the run/bike and having to tread water to regain my composure.
*edit: Also thanks for the swimming videos and tips everyone! Edited by mn_av8or 2013-01-08 12:25 PM |

So, if I am as prepared as possible then I can officially say I have done all I can do. So true. I had a mechanical in a sprint last August. I'd NEVER had it happen on a training ride. Fortunately it was just a dropped chain so I got a little dirty fixing it and got back on the road. If I had a flat my only option is CO2. If that doesn't work I'm done. I know how to change a tire but the tires on my bike are so stiff that I can't do it. I have to take it to the LBS. It doesn't happen often because the reason they are so stiff is that they are Armadillos so they withstand anything. I've yet to have a flat with them. |

I live in a small country town where I am probably one of a handful of runners. The majority of my runs are at 5am in the dark. Currently I wear a black diamond sprinter head lamp with red led flasher on the back, a runners world reflective vest, and 2 road id supernova flashers. Looking at myself in the mirror I'm light up like a Christmas tree. I run back roads that are not very lit since none of our roads are and about once per week I have a car run me off the road. I can't figure out if they are just being a jerk or they seriously don't see me. There isn't much traffic at all that time of the day and the cars that due pass usually give me plenty of room. |

Is it the same guy/car? I know that is hard to answer at 5:00 am, but if you narrow it down you may be able to get with the local authorities and log a complaint. Which could result in nothing, a fix, or an uptick in your issue. You never know. I bet they are able to see you, given your description. It may help to talk to the police while dressed in your usual run garb. As an early morning runner, I feel your pain and wish you luck. And I agree with TJ, I do all my early morning street running into oncoming (such that it is) traffic. Edited by cdban66 2013-01-08 1:54 PM |

I do have a track that I run for my speed work but I would go crazy running all of my runs there. The police won't do much good. About a month ago one of the officers almost ran the biking group I was in off the road. He had pleanty of room to go around but obviously was irritated at us riding on the side of the road and pulled up within inches to us. We don't have bike paths or running paths, It's not a very friendly bike or run town at all. |

Actually, I love running on the track when it's dark. We don't pay for our track time so the stadium lights are off and it is pitch black during our track practices. It's a really interesting sensation. One I have grown to love, maybe out of necessity. |
