Leeches, centipedes, and parasites. They scare me...a lot. That is all. Centipedes really ick me out--if one crawls on me I scream and flail like a little girl.

Speaking of motion sickness (and back to tri stuff - sorry, everybody!), I was told that if I don't do bilateral breathing, I'm likely to get motion sick when doing OWS.  I've also heard ear plugs help.  What's your experience been with OWS and motion sickness?

I don't do the bilateral breathing thing, but depending on how choppy/cold the water is... I got HUGELY motion sick in Lake Michigan last year, even with ear plugs - but the swells were 3-5 feet or more and I was pretty much the only idiot in the water.

I don't ever swim without earplugs, even when swimming in a pool, mainly because I really hate the feeling of water in my ears and it becomes painful and tends to give me small bouts of vertigo, which usually leads to people at work thinking I'm drunk if I've been swimming during lunch...

ehem...

Do they think it, or do they know it?

Hey now... I haven't had Baileys in my morning coffee in AGES!  And I've only come back to work drunk twice, and both times were in London... and were the result of going for lunch with one of the partners.  It was totally his fault, and that's the story I'm sticking with.

How many of you do Yoga? A friend of mine (yoga teacher) has been begging to come try it since my IM. She says she can help with my IT Band. I'm going today to attempt it

My massage therapist is also a yoga instructor; he really recommended it for ITB issues.  However, I don't do any full-on sessions due to strong recommendation from my hip surgeon.  She says if you've had cartilage repair/revision, it's not a good idea.  I do Child's Pose to stretch my low back but that's it.

I know Erin does yoga as well as (I think) Judi.  Personally, I'm not really fond of most yoga practices, however, I really like hot yoga.  The only trouble with doing it regularly is that it just takes too much time when I'm also training - so I tend to do it during the off season or when I'm feeling really stiff.

Give it a whirl and see if you like it!

I totally jacked my body up last year and started getting regular this-is-going-to-hurt-you-bad massages and regularly going to  a yin yoga class.  I call yin yoga stretching while resting.  You pretty much stay on the mat the whole time and you hold your poses for 3-7 minutes.  The practice really helps with hip, hamstring, quad, back etc issues.  I am now a convert to both things.  The main issue I had with the yin class was trying not to laugh out loud  or groan when the instructor said things like "relax your scalp" and "breathe into your left lung" , but now I look forward to these sayings and smile when they're said

Maybe white water rafting - I had a little incident -spent some time under a kayak and broke my foot on rocks that seemed to me to be awfully close to getting foot entrapment, but I still do it when given the opportunity.  It just takes a little suck it up buttercup talking to myself to get in and enjoy the ride.  Other than that I think I'm pretty much ok with everything.

Can't think of anything that I have a phobia for (including Friday the 13th).

As for yoga, I should try it. I don't want to take the time to go to a class but there are lots of yoga for runners type videos on FB. Maybe it'll help my IT issue.

That's been my problem too. The last 5 months IF I had any extra time it was spent swim/bike/run not trying yoga but now that I am kind of in my off season or break then I'm gonna try it. I do it in 2 hours so I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Can someone explain a dumb question to me?? What are the stars under our name represent? At first I thought it had to do with training volume but it doesn't make sense since I haven't done anything in a while.

Number of posts (I believe) In your case, the stars would be 475. Compare yours to Yanti's. I'm guessing yours will turn to a single blue one shortly.

You do have time on your hands now, don't you?

Hmmm... I guess I'm not really scared of most things.  I used to take entomology classes in university, I've dissected everything from cockroaches that we had to catch ourselves to human cadavers, I haven't found a height yet that I've felt afraid being up that high,  and I'd like to go skydiving, swim with the sharks, etc...

If I had to pick something it would be the "what if" scenarios...  as in what if I was kidnapped, or had a gun to my head, or was somehow trapped and couldn't get out, breathe, etc.  But I figure until I'm IN one of those scenarios I don't really have a need to be afraid, right?

INFO FOR NEW MANATEES

If you haven't figured it out, we talk a lot. :-)  Fasten your seatbelts!  Also, we tend to be an inspiring bunch (as in, we use the "inspire" feature of the site a lot).  If you are not familiar with inspires, note that you can reply to them by clicking Reply.  This pops out a new window for you to type your response so that the original poster can see it.  Finally, most of us use the training log on the site (Yanti said that it's required: "Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory.").  This makes it a lot easier for us to help each other when training questions come up.    If you're not going to log or blog or whatever here on BT, please put a link to your training log in your BT Dashboard.

If you list your upcoming races on your training log  -- by adding to My Races or listing them in Dashboard, we'll celebrate with you!

We have a Google+ community that we use on an irregular basis.  Send your info to a returning Manatee (Janyne, Chris, Monica or Darren) and you will be added.

We have a Bike Gallery as well.  Post a picture of your racing steed and draw Chris' attention to it.  He'll get you added.

We have a Strava group too.  Let Chris or Janyne know and we can add you.  (PRO TIP:  If you decide to join the Strava group, check out https://tapiriik.com/or http://www.syncmetrics.com/. They will sync from Garmin Connect to Strava in the background.)

Oh, we're on Twitter too...

In the past, someone in the Pod (Yanti, Chris, Janyne) has created a table listing all of the pod members with links to their logs.  Once this handy dandy table has been created, feel free to copy/paste it to your own dashboard.

Please be active!  Inactive Manatees make us sad!

I go to yoga once a week.  It's my "rest day" which is now all scheduled up with a "recovery swim" in the morning and yoga.  Not sure how I feel about that.  Anyway, back to the question -- I do feel better after the class and I think that it helps.  I may or may not have improved my flexibility since I started to go to class regularly in November.

Like Hands, I prefer the yin style class but that's only offered at my place on Sunday's at times that totally don't work for me.

Unlike Monica, I hate hot yoga.  I end up overly hot and dehydrated and headachy.

Thanks for posting the hints about the group! I will definitely try to upload my races and trainings.

As for the yoga question, both my PT and my Ortho doc *really* encouraged me to do yoga. I have weak and tight muscle groups and it is supposed to really be beneficial. I'm trying to be more mindful of doing both yoga and strength training in order to not get hurt again. Once a week can't hurt, right?

Gear question--any use a garmin 310xt? I have a forerunner 305 but seeing as I am doing a tri (and hopefully multiple tris!) I'd like something that is waterproof. In looking at reviews I see that the mileage isn't accurate but I think it would be good to use for keeping track of my overall time. I can pick one up used fairly cheap. Any thougths? Pros or cons?

Yes, I've had a 310XT since 2011 (knock wood).  It's been good to me!  You're right, it's a price performer right now.  I understand that Garmin is due for another multisport watch in 2015 and I'd like to keep my 310XT going that long ;-)

http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2009/09/garmin-forerunner-310xt-in-depth-review.html

I won't lie.  When I started to do masters swimming, I got a Garmin Swim.  And last year I got a running watch too.  I use the 310 on my bike, for brick runs and for OWS (sometimes, other times I just don't want to know!).  I'm a device junkie

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
