The new out and back is definitely less rolling and less grade. The shortened out and back on Hazleton is not much of a challenge, which is good because what comes immediately after is! I like the LP DVD, as it helps to visualize race day and with various landmarks. Further, Coach Troy is pretty accurate with his comments.

I will make one comment having raced both courses. The new out and back is faster, however, the placement makes it a more interesting finish of the course. After you finish the out and back you turn right onto 86 for arguably (and we can debate that I'm sure) one of the hardest hills on the course (not steepest). You then go directly into the climb up 86 from there. The old out and back used to break those sections up (and now that is a one mile section on Hazelton). You no longer have that break in the climbing. You are pretty much climbing for the last 20 miles of each loop. That said, the new out and back is faster imho. Just my random thought for the day.

Oh and a fun game is to count how many times he says "stay on my wheel" during the video. My 12 yr old daughter got so used to hearing it that she yelled it out during race day at mile 25. She can be a smartass. I laughed so hard I almost wet myself...which I was doing already that day so it didn't matter.

That's pretty funny about your kid! It's always good to have something like that happen when your racing.

Speaking of wetting yourself I have come to the point where I think I will not want to be wasting precious time to use the porta john to urinate so I  plan on letting it go on the bike too, however I don't feel the need to practice this before race day. I know they say never try anything new on race day, but I feel I can make an exception for this! Anyone care to throw out their opinion on this one?

SEADOCHA, I tested this tactic for the first time last weekend.  I recommend giving it a practice or two.  After very limited experience, two observations:

First, I thought it would work best to simply "stand on the pedals" since I've pissed standing up with great success for many decades.  It was actually easier if I sat on the nose of the saddle a bit off to the side and balanced on one cheek while the opposite leg was extended straight.

Second, I did it on a flat section and I'm sure that a downhill would have helped.  Once I naturally slowed to about 12 mph, it was a bit of a challenge to balance the bike and keep focus on all the internal physiological signals that I was trying to send my body.

Congratulations to you Jason! My appointment with the fitter lasted over 2 hours. My throat was sore from so many questions...and I took notes, of course.

What bike did you get??

(And nice ride outside, Stacie! I'll be jealous for another 24 hours. I'm looking forward to the wind since I need to see if I can handle the wind)

After 2 hours of fittings on 3 different brands, the one that fit me the best was a Trek Speed Concept 7.8.  It definitely seems like it's going to be more bike than I can handle.  I'm not sure I'm worthy of its speed yet, but I'm going to try.  I'll get pics up as soon as I get it next Friday.

No more talk of new bikes till we have pics~!! WE MUST HAVE PICS!!!  And for the pics, make sure the chain is in the big ring - big gear , pedals are even, and the wheels match, and you get an insider and outside pic.  This stuff is important.

My favorite part of the Coach Troy video is when he blows a snot rocket and apologizes if he got any on you.  *I do have to be honest, I watched the coach Troy video and then when I road the course in training and on race day, I had zero recollection between what I saw on the video and the course.  So for me, watching the video helped pass time on the trainer, but it did zero to familiarize me with the course.  Perhaps it's because the video camera is so limited to a video frame and when you're actually out there you catch yourself looking at amazing views that can't squeeze into a small video frame.

Regarding peeing on the bike, I've never done it training - scratch that, couple times when it was raining.  Downhills definitely help.

Riding outside today! Supposed to hit 60+ degrees.  Wow, it's even gonna get up to the mid 50's in Lake Placid today.  But tomorrow is showing low of 12 degrees, hi of 36 and snow.  Go figure.

Wow!

Quite a learning experience today in the wind. New tribike with Zipps.

Welcome to the 'real world'...Pushed all over the road and quite nervous with gusts to 40 mph and steady 20 mile winds from all directions. I learned about leaning into the wind today thanks to the Zipp 808's. Fortunately, I did not go to ground like I did with my inaugural ride on my road bike with clip on pedals...ha.

I LOVE it!

Great looking Cervelo...

I'm currently planning on riding Zipp 808s as well.  They are a great wheel...

Here's a question to toss out there, that I have heard debated quite a bit, How many water bottles are you planning on carrying during LP.  I ride w TWO.  i see you have three...  Any insight?

I'm sure many will throw out their comments, but I chose 3 based on the fact that I do not want to be dependent on fluids being given to me. The front water bottle in the horizontal position actually improves the aero profile of the bike-even if nothing is in it. Of course, when I raise myself out of the aero position every 15 minutes due to my weak body fighting me, I'll totally negate that advantage...ha.

I plan to rotate them front back to front.

Depending on weather/heat, I plan on riding with two bottles.  One on the aerobars (like your set-up) with H2O.  The second bottle will be on the frame and be filled with Perpetuem.  I plan on cruising through one of the aid stations to take an additional bottle of H2O along each lap.

Each lap tentatively will include: (1) bottle of Perpetuem, (1) Flask filled w Hammer gel, (2-3) bottles of H2O.

I suppose we have plenty of time to work out the nutrition part of the race.

Best of luck with that new ride!!

Once I figure out how to post pics, I'll get a photo of my new ride also...

I plan on having 2 bottles on the frame and an aero bottle between the bars. Just not sure what I will have in them yet.

I'd like to use the perform, but I remember it wasn't the best tasting last year when I sampled it. I'm going to try it again, that way if I need help on the course I can take the drink.

anyone try the new Gu roctane drink yet? I think I'm going to check it out

I know everyone is different but your electrolyete levels look very low with the plan you suggested. I am drinking 4 bottles of Perform during a 3 hr ride ride now. thats with out heat and wind. But I will say everyone is different.

Everyone has their own opinion on water bottles and you will do what you feel is best for you. For me that meant just riding with an aero bottle up front. I can drink pretty much anything and the gatorade on the course suits me fine. I keep a bottle of drink in transition so I can gulp down some right after the swim. I now have an aero bottle full until the first aid station in 10 miles. I find it gives me 2 benefits. First is your bike is not loaded down with liquids for the 2 steep climbs out of town. 2nd it was easier to keep track of how much I was drinking. I could look at my aero bottle and see how full it was every 10 miles. Grab a bottle dump and go. Found this to be a good strategy for me. Everyone is different though and handles the on course stuff differently. Trial during training rides is good. If you can drink what they have on course it is of benefit to not load down with bottles. I know it is good to err on the high side, but have you ever needed 3 full bottles in the first 10 or even 20 miles of a training ride? Oh yeah...I paid for that stuff on course and I will get my $600 worth! Hope your training is going well.

That is one of my concerns.  I see so many people with 3, 4 and even 5 bottles while heading out of transition.  Drink much?

During my last sprint race, I saw a bike in transition with (5) Gu taped to the top tube, (2) water bottles on the fame and (1) aero bottle w straw on the bars.  It was a 15 mile ride!!

I think you hit the nail on the head Monty.  If you drink Infinit or your own sport-specific drink other than Perform; you're likely gonna have to carry more bottles and keep a couple of bottles in special needs.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying some Ironman Perform and seeing if it works for you.  If gatorade agrees with you, than more-than-likly so will the Ironman Perform.  Living off the course we shave A LOT of weight off your bike.

Last year I had an aero drink with perform between my aerobars, and I had my aero profile design arundel bottle attached to the frame filled with carbopro and water.  That's it.  And I drank my aero profile gatorade pretty quickly after I got out of the water.

I believe there is an aid station roughly every 11 miles on the bike, that's 5 aid stations per 56 mile loop offering water, Perform and bananas, occasionally gels.  I remember on the out & back grabbing a water and putting it in my back cage, and then there was a slight climb.  From not having anything on my bike, I could feel the full water bottle on the back!

So my set up (unless they predict 95+ degrees and 100% humidity) will be aero arundel on the frame, and aero drink between the aerobars.  I will have the two back cages open for extra bottles that I grab from aid stations.

Bobby - So on the back cages do you just bring empty bottles, I thought it was a bottle exchange so you would have to give up a bottle to get a bottle.  So if you start with empty cages how do you get them with bottles of stuff?  I didn't get to see the bike portion of the race when I volunteered last year, so I didn't get to see how the transitions worked when it comes to the bike.  I can only envison it as a mass pileup with people just stopped grabbing all kinds of food and drinks.

Yea this sounds about like what i'll have during my ride.  1 Perpetuem bottle w/ 3 servings in it (bout 810 Cal), a flask of hammer gel (think they hold 6 shots?), and a bottle w/ Nuun / electrolyte tablet in it.  I'll have another bottle of perpetuem in special needs (water, shake up, good to go) with another electrolyte tablet.  I may shove a Bonk Bar in my back just in case I feel the need to chew on something to break the monotony of drinking calories.

This is tentative, but seems like a good plan.  Still 19 weeks left (yay!) so some things could very well change when I try this on long rides.

My plan for bottles coming out of transition are two cages behind the seat with one cage empty and one cage with 2hrs of pertetuem and speedfill a2 in the aero bars good for one hour and for emergency purposes I'll bring 2-3gels in my back pocket for emergency purposes incase my back bottle falls off. Every hour Ill put half of my back bottle to my A2 and fill it with water. So half of the water not in my aerobars is going to my back empty cage for hydration or cooling of the body. Would have another 2hrs bottle and 1hr bottle of pertetuem in my special needs bag for the second loop. Love the aerobottles you don't have to get out of aero to drink!
