troyboy - 2010-07-15 4:07 PM YEAH!!! As of 2:30 today, they sealed the oil leak! Laughing

Very good news.

Now not to sound stoopid, but do we need to wait another 4 months for all the oil that's been leaking up until now to get dragged around the coasts by the currents?

Yes.
But note that the longer it's in the water the more it breaks up, evaporates, and biodegrades.  There is oil in the water always - just not so much all at the same time.  (tankers leak, ships discharge gunk, and there are seeps in the ocean floor)

Most of the oil that makes it to land will probably be closer to the site of the blow-out.

Keep your fingers crossed that this cap holds.

I heard the news on the radio that the leak had finally been capped. Hopefully this new cap in addition to the relief wells that are being drilled and should be completed sometime in August will solve the leak problem for good. The only question is clean up at this point. Anyone know if Kevin Costner's oil machines are actually being used yet? From what I understand they actually do clean out over 90% of the oil from the water they take in. It's just disappointing that the successful solution is being ignored due to his celebrity status.

Fingers and toes all crossed over here in the UK that this cap works, and that they can reduce the pressure by connecting up the correct system rather than waiting for another leak

Oil well has been successfully capped ... finally.  Now, on with the clean up and fingers crossed that the Gulf can be reclaimed for everyone impacted by this.

I clean up oil spills for a living (in fact I was outside all afternoon today with a small deisel spill).  The logistics of cleanups can get confusing and with the amount that was spilled it could take a very long time to clean up.  Hopefully for us, the currents stay the same as they are now and the oil continues to go ashore in the already impacted area.  The biggest problem with the clean up effort is that the oil doesn't seem to be making to the surface (and is spreading laterally at depth) for the most part which makes the logistics more difficult than if it was a near surface spill (say a tanker or what not).

I'm cautiously optimistic with the prognosis, but who knows what will happen when huricane season starts.

I read that yahoo article last week when I was on vacation and I seriously question the experts that they were talking to.  The dangers of petroleum impacted water (dissolved phase) are fairly well known and the tests are simple to perform (in field screening) and you can rush laboratory results to get them within 12 hours of taking the sample (it just costs more money).

As long as there is no sheen on the water in PCB, I will be swimming in the gulf (either during the race or during my vacation).

ETA - I just realized I forgot to clarify - I work with on land or underground spills, not water spill.s

Happy to read they have capped it...but not holding my breath.  There are other possible problems that could occur...one line from an article I read in particular is worrisome "The worst-case scenario would be if the oil forced down into the bedrock ruptured the seafloor irreparably"....But, I will hold a positive thought that they are headed in the right direction!

Well I was planning on a 60 or 70 mile ride this morning, but a nice little spill on the access road cut that short.

I was about 25 miles into the ride and feeling great. I was hydrated, taking in gels and the legs still felt very fresh. Overall the ride was perfect. Unfortunately I reached back into my jersey to grab another gel, like I've done hundreds of times before, and next thing I know I see my front wheel is pointing sideways and I'm losing control and sliding down the middle of the road on my side. Ended up ripping a hole in my shorts (glad I was wearing the old ones) and a couple holes in my jersey. Landed mostly on my right arm and acquired a nice case of road rash to match the abrasion on my right hip. Overall it's not too deep but should still be out of the pool for about a week until it scabs over.

I'm real disappointed I lost concentration and ate it while I was simply going straight down a small decline but the saying holds true, "it's not if you crash, it's when you crash". I think I did pretty well not falling off for 2600+miles, not even from trying to clip out of my pedals.

Owie.  Heal up quickly!!!

My one and only crash was on my old road bike when some jerk ran me off the road in a construction zone (6 inch drop to soft gravel.  tore up the palm of my hand so i couldn't swim or bike for two weeks.

Pretty impressive.  Any major damage to the bike?

The only spill I've had so far is when I got my new tri bike at the beginning of this season and misjudged the effectiveness of the brakes and did a sommersault down the middle of downtown baltimore during rush hour.  Turned a few heads.  Minor scrapes for me but bent my handle bar one week after getting the bike.  Oh well.

The only part of the bike that really hit the road was the bar end shifters. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) I took the majority of the fall with the bike pretty much landing on top of me. The left bar end shifter had to be replaced since it was cracked and the right one is a little scuffed up but still works okay, but I haven't ridden it yet haha.

I'm not looking forward to waking up tomorrow morning. While my elbow does hurt, it's my outer right thigh that's really bothering me and has a pretty nifty bruise (which I'm not going to post). Didn't really get any road rash though as the shorts only partially ripped and kept the asphalt out of my skin.

I'm also thinking due to the location on my arm even if I can get on the bike in a couple days I definitely won't be getting into aero for a while.

How was everyone's weekend? Fun training? Anyone race?

I rode longest since I had my knee scoped. My knee is handling cycling well and will start doing intervals again to try to get my FTP back up again. I'm back running on the road albeit slow. Bit bummed what I lost but excited that I am healthy and can get back to normal training.

Kathy, it's good to see that your biking is coming back.  I'm impressed to see how you persevered (sp?) over the last month of injury.  I tend to let injuries side track me.

I had my first long ride with my half im and back problems on Saturday.  did a 50 mile/5 mile brick and for the last third of the ride my back was getting uncomforatable.  On the run it felt completely fine.  Did a longish run yesterday and that went great as well.  I think that I'm finally back to normal and can start training in earnest again after recovery/sick/back within a 2 week period after my half.

F1 - hope you heal quickly.  Lavendar oil (diluted) is good for road rash.  Helps it heal.

My second longest weekend ever this past.  177 miles over two days.  3 mile brick after the century on Saturday.

Paying for it today with much soreness.

I learned however that I can push harder than I thought I could for a century.  I learned to pay attention to nutrition always.  And I learned to keep the goal in mind when feeling frisky in the morning (on the bike   ).

I think that sometimes in training it's good to go too hard.  That way you learn how hard you can go.

What did you-all do this weekend?

sorry to hear about the injuries and illnesses etc everyone. glad to hear about some of you mending up! last year at this time i was out for a whole month and still got to finish IMAZ in decent time. so it can happen even if your body is like carp right now.

im amping up my volume lately. feeling decent considering. tri-ghost got nailed by a yellow jacket in the head yesterday while we were out. he already had a big head but now its twice as big haha

on the same ride, we got pepper sprayed by a fellow rider shooting for a dog, i busted a cleat on my bike shoe, and i got a taint sore the size of your pinky. gotta love these epic rides haha

I had my longest bike this weekend - 88 miles. Lots of fun in the rain and wind and even had my first puncture! All good training though. That's how I look at everything now. Did a mile OWS on Friday morning in a very strong wind. Boy was that tough. Waves were just pummelling us both ways! Again I look at it as good practice for what's to come!

Sorry to hear some of you are suffering but it's good to hear of the recoveries too. I've been having a few niggles with my knee when running so have cut the distances back a little and things appear to have settled down. Will start increasing again and see what happens.

Happy training everyone.

Hi there all.  I haven't checked in for awhile.    Things are still OK in Iraq.  I'm a bit jealous of the long bike rides you guys are doing.  My speed doesn't help in that regard...nor does the near continuous looping I have to do on base.  But maybe once I get home (in about a month I think) I'll enjoy riding in a straight line so much that I won't even notice the length.

I really need to work on bike research...I've been a slacker!

What are nibs?

I agree with socks and like to eat candy when I do long rides. Best way is to go big store and look around for what appeals to you. Ideally something low in fat works best and things like gummy bears or that type of candy tends to not have any fat. Things with chocolate have fat but I like chocolate so I tend to get things with it.

I often will buy fun size candy bars like twix and they work out to be 60-80 calories so ideal for my calories every 20' plan.

Today, I tried  Powerbar Endurance drink which is very similar nutritional to the 'new Powerbar Ironman' drink  and worked well for my 3:30 ride. I bought it at REI for just under $9 for 52 servings both in Lemon lime and Fruit Punch. The price has gone up to $11 but still less than most on line places.

are nibs a canadian candy?  I never knew that.

they are bite sized cherry licorice.  They are solid instead of having the hole in the centre.

My coach was telling me at lunch time about these bite sized pretzels pouches that have peanut butter in them.  he tried them on the weekend and said they were great, i think I will try those this weekend.  apparently 8 = 120 calories.

All3sports has the ready to drink Powerbar performance and will ship to Canada for the low low price of $150.  Not sure it is worth it.

ETA: Nibs

I did a long organized ride a few weekends back and they had the peanut butter filled pretzels at some of the aid stations.  AMAZING ... I should give the caveat that my weakness in life is peanut butter.  Put it on anything and I will likely eat it.  That said, big fan of the peanut butter pretzels and will be adding them to my Special Needs bag for IMFL.
