Congrats!  You should be able to remember that birthday!

Other than anxiety of not being prepared, what do all of you use for motivation?

C

I am looking at the training and race as the means, not the end.   I turn the big 50 this year and am using IMCdA as a way to achieve peak fitness for my half-century.  I want to PR in as many races as I can (taking care not to cause conflicts with my IM training.) As far as preparations; over the years, I have completed 4 marathons (including Boston in 2009) and three HIM races.  I fully understand mental toughness.  It will make or break you and like physical toughness, you have to train.  Anytime that I am doing anything and the little voice in my head says "dial it back a little" or " cut the distance shorter today", I IGNORE THE VOICE.   If you train yourself to do this, then it will be a lot easier on race day.

I know what you mean about fighting the mental demons, particularly as the cumulative fatigue can start to overwhelm us.  And most of us are capable of more than what we think we are.

However, that fact can get us in trouble too.  In particular, there are some times when we should listen to that "dial it back a little" voice... but we are so committed to the goal... so enslaved to the plan... that we push through to our detriment.

It's almost certain there will come a point in IM training where we will have a choice between skipping a workout or two... or doing them and risking injury.  In that case, listen to your body and dial it back a little.  There will be countless times where you are feeling good... feeling like you could run faster than the plan says you should... but you're forgetting you had a hard effort the day before and another one tomorrow.  In that case, when you look at your garmin and see that you are running almost 1 minute/mile faster than you should be... dial it back a little!

On race day, the vast majority of us will ride the bike too hard and lose via a compromised run far more than what we gained on the bike.  On race day, listen to the bike angel on your shoulder who is saying "dial it back a little" even when you're getting passed like a senior citizen driver on sunday morning... they are either better than you, in which case you'll only hurt yourself by speeding up with them... or they aren't as smart as you, and you'll see them on the run.

In summary:
1) there's a fine line between listening to your body and pushing yourself.
2) the best way to ruin your training is to get injured (my rationale for conservativism).
3) he who pushes the hardest won't always be the fastest.
4) most of us do our easy workouts too hard, and our hard workouts too easy.

so i put some feelers out for housing on facebook, different CDA things like pubs, shoe stores, etc. and I got a bite so housing is sorted-8 blocks from transition for 150 per night in a 3ba 3br BAM!

also wanted to let you know about a BTer who did IMCOZ last year and is doing IMFL  this year. He is a software developer and he developed tracking software that grabs your data from WTC and updates your fb status or tweets your splits as you go along during the day. its pretty cheap and ill be using it. wanted to give him a shout out as he tries to have a business go of it. have a look:

Cool. I know it was a shameless plug but it really was cool to have the fb status updates all day long. I am not sure about the other gps device that tracks you around the course. At IMFL a couple of BTers like KathyG were using it. This thing sufficed for me and it was free on trial last year. That thing was like 50$. Troy's updater is like 5$ per race?

Oh boy, now it's my turn.  I have a touch of the flu & I'm mentally going thru a "this-whole-ironman-thing-is-stupid-and-Im-getting-too-old" frame of mind.

I guess this will pass, given past experience & others' testimonials.  At least I hope it's not lasting...

The flu will pass and so will the negative mental talk. I feel that way, too. Like, what the hell was I thinking? But, then I remember one day at a time and just do the best I can at any given moment.

Take care and I hope you feel better soon! Rest up!

My turn!

Cough (since before XMAS) developing into bronchitis shortly after new years.  Finally am kicking it due to some kickass antibiotics.  Wrestling with some knee pain too that I have been having since running marathon in early december.

So, I have taken the last 2 weeks off and my knees are feeling completely recovered.  My cough is gone.
I'm supposed to run a 50k on saturday that I had talked myself out of.  But, know that everything is better I'm inclined to do it.

I'm looking forward to real IM training.  My plan is to follow the 17 week BT Advanced plan which won't start until end of Feb.  Until that time I'm just going to continue to do mostly hour'ish runs and hour'ish bikes and 30-40 min swims.

BTW, I used the athlete tracker app that phat mentioned at IMFL.  Had it text my wife's cell phone.  That thing worked like a charm and was a fantastic service for minimizing the amount of time my wife and young children had to spend on course.

Cheers

Yeah guys. i am a survivor of that flu bug. I think it must attack the Ironman cells of your brain. Once the flu was gone, I went from a case of severe burnout with training, to a pack of matches that just got lit! hang in there, let it work itself out via rest, and you will come back around hungrier than ever.

Gotta love the trainer this time of year! Cool to ride the course on it...

Quick story:

I got started skiing when I was about 5 and snowboarding when I was a teen.  Love it.  Fast forward to today...

I have some instability in my right knee due to a partially torn ACL.  It's bad enough that it bothers me doing things like soccer, but no problems for running in a straight line.  But unfortunately it won't heal on its own.

Anyhow, my group at work went out for a ski/snowboard day yesterday, on the company dime.  I skipped it because I don't want to risk putting myself out of commission for several months with a knee repair and rehab.  How's that for dedication?

Nice! You definitely get the hardcore award of the week! Tough to pass up something you love to do, especially this far out from the race.

yeah that back portion is a killer on the ct. From experience of riding AZ, Lou, and WI on the ct and then doing the races, I think the hills are tougher on the ct than in real life.

Week 11 down and I'm starting to feel much more comfortable and my motivation is going through the rough. Although some days I’m wore out and have to go through the motion to get the miles in.  The weight is coming  off and I’m getting to the point where I need to add more calories in the next two weeks to stop losing weight.  I can’t wait for 70.3 CA to test my fitness level and practice my nutrition plan for IMCDA under race conditions.  I think tonight I’m going to talk to my coach and finalize what race wheels I’m going to use (ZIP 404 Front 808 rear).

Time for a 12 mile run and 3000 yard swim .   YEAH HA.. The good thing is I'll no problem falling asleep.

   HAPPY TRAINING!!
