Thanks DC and mndymond! - CB 10 miler turned out well! For the second week in a row I was somehow put in the last wave to start (12min+/mile group! - I gotta pay more attention to these things when registering) but I took DC's advice to race at least one of these and I managed to zig zag my way to a PR... only 5 seconds off my normal 10K pace which surprised me. IM training is definitely having a good effect. Or maybe it was the box of Apple Jacks I ate the night before which might be my new prerace dinner. Either way it was a fun race.

How did everyone else racing this weekend do?!

Ryan

Nice Job, Ryan!     Congrats on the PR.  Yeah, one of the reasons I dislike uber-big races is because of the crowds and zig-zagging.

And congrats to Melindy on 2nd Female OA!  That's kicks butt!!

As for the weather and temps, looks like here on Long Island we are FINALLY going to be in the consistent 50's for this week, however we're going to be rained out the next few days.  I never imagined I'd be this excited about 50-degree weather.

Well its day 1 of my 2nd main build. Just going to take it day by day I think because looking at my schedule it is a bit overwhelming volume wise! Ah! Started it off this morning with a 3500m swim. Wooo!

Hi Everyone.  I've been meaning to post this for a few weeks, and just remembered now.   If you've never been to an Ironman Expo, the main Ironman merchandise tent is like walking into a Willy Wonka candy store.  Mugs, water bottles, stickers, bike kits (bike jersey and matching bike shorts), t-shirts, tech shirts, jackets, sweatshirts, etc... Everything with nice bright red, white and blue IMUSA logo's, patterns and designs.  I dropped close the 300 bucks without even trying!!  And this is the pre-race stuff, not even the Finisher's Merchandise that is available the day after.

Now knowing what I will be walking into, and what I'll be wanting to get for myself as well as wife and kiddies, I am starting an 'IMUSA Merchandise Fund' now.  Every paycheck I'm putting aside a couple of bucks.  This way I will feel (slightly) less guilty when I give even more money to WTC.

What Finisher's merchandise do they offer that's different from the WTC expo merchandise.  I'm assuming the finisher stuff probably says "FINISHER" on it?  haha I don't want to get bad juju and not buy anything at the expo so save money for the finisher merchandise and assume I'll finish.  I never put on the race shirt until after I finish as well!

Question for the group: How do you manage days off? Normally my answer is to not take any (except my scheduled day on Monday) unless I am sick. Even though my plan builds very gradually, I think that a day off every several weeks might actually be a good thing. Thoughts?

Thanks!

I didn't make it to the finisher's merchandise tent, cause I didn't make it to the start line.  But "yes" all my friends bought sutff that said "Finisher" on it.  Some nice shirts and jackets.  Perhaps some other BT'ers with past m-dot experience can chime in about the finishers swag....

I've been told - You'd rather be 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained.  I've been told - Getting through Ironman Training and arriving at the starting line healthy is of utmost importance.  And I've learned that the hard way.  The 'Bread and Butter' of Ironman Training is the Long Bike. Also, consistent Running and medium-Long Runs (13 miles to 15 miles; 2hours to 2.5 hours).  If you miss a weekly s/b/r once or twice a month, it's not the end of the world.  It will likely not have a huge impact on your overall race performance.  If you miss a couple of Long Bikes, or key endurance sessions, then that is a whole nother matter.

We are all Experiments of One.  We all have different genetics and thus Recover differently.  Rest is a crucial part of training.  If you don't allow occasional Rest and allow the body to absorb the training--and you're continually breaking it down--your chance of injury/sickness increases; your chance of burnout increases; your ability gain fitness by succesfully completing future workouts is compromised.

Genetics, diet, lifestyle, experience in the sport, all play a part in how much Rest *You* need.

I've had two training injuries that sidelined me.  The first was IT Band Syndrome in November of 2008.  I upped my mileage to quick, and did back to back hard efforts without proper Rest.  Last year I did the same thing, but on the Bike.  I kept hitting it hard on the Bike repeatedly, and I never allowed my legs a chance to properly Recover.  On very fatigued and sore legs, I set out on a Century Ride and at Mile 90 BAM!!! Excruciating pain in my left knee that would'nt subside for several months.   This has been my experience.  Needless to say, I'm taking a Rest Day today

From the book 'Going Long' one of the points driven home in that book is certain workouts "key endurance workouts"/ "breakthrough sessions" whatever you want to call them, it's imperative to go into these workouts somewhat fresh and rested and to complete them succesfully to gain Ironman-specific fitness, and also to build confidence.  I do not suggest attempting any of these sessions (exampkle: 2.5 hour run, or a 4-hour+ bike, or 3500+meter swim) if your body is overly-fatigued or sore.  When your that far along in your training (for us, May & June), if you been training properly and consistently you'll know the difference between mild soreness/fatigue and the flirting with disaster.  This has been my experience.

Oh, and just to add... you can do things like yoga, ball work, and stuff like that on Recovery Days to facilitate Recovery and keep from going enirely crazy.  Oh, and just wait till the Taper!!!

I think rest days/days off are KEY to recovery - which is as important to training as your hard interval sessions and long rides.  About every 3-4 weeks I have a recovery week where my volume drops, I get a day off (or sometimes two) - but my intensity increases.  Everyone is different but anyway, that is my two cents and what works for me.

109 days....

I don't do rest/off days. I have "active" recovery days. Usually its a swim. If I take an entire day off I feel so flat the next day. Even if it is an easy easy 30 min spin on the bike on an active recovery day, my body feels WAAAYYY better than just couch surfing.

My schedule is 7 days a week and just ramping up a little more starting this week so don't really have off days. I think you can check my log to see when my last one was. Maybe two months or so. Not necessary in my plan. Pick a plan and stick to it. No Frankenstein plans!

Where did everyone freaking go?

This thread has turned into a conversation between approximately 5 of us and EVERYONE ELSE has gone AWOL!!

C'mon peeps.  We're all heading into our biggest Volume weeks.  Let's get some chatter going.  Some smack talk.  Some questions.  Some funny training anecdotes.  What is everyone feeling??  Let's LOOK ALIVE in this thread.  The CDA thread is kicking our asss!!!

Okay, I'll start.  Errrr.... hmmm... I am so damn happy to get off the trainer.  I got two outside rides in and BAM!! it's been like a wind tunnel outside!!  So much for easy breezy outside rides.

Errrrr...  --I can't believe we are almost to exactly 100 days out!!  It seems like just a few weeks ago I was signing up! Actually - that's a lie.  It feels like I signed up two years ago thanks to the longest, forsakenly cold winter I've ever experienced.

--Westchester Triathlete is racing Ironman Texas 70.3 this weekend - Wooo-Hooo!!  Maybe he'll do a pre-race and post-race video blog??  That'd be cool.  Who else is racing this weekend??

-- As far as the diet goes... I found a box of Samoa GirlScout cookies this morning!  Accidentally, of course.  I only ate half the box ... so that's an improvement for me.   Hoping to swim and run them off today.

--I'm currently using the Profile Design Tri-Stryke Elite saddle.  I love this saddle, but I think it forces me to rotate my pelvis too much and not rest enough on my 'sit bones' which causes a tight lower back.  The adamo forces me back onto the sit bones and loosens up my back, but then my butt is so damn sore.  I've heard it taking a while to get used to the adamo - but I can never seem to get used to it.  Anyone else find themselves always searching for the prefect saddle?

Okay, pic a topic and go with it... or feel free to add you own topic!!  LET'S GET SOME BANTER GOING LP'ers!!!!

Well I still read the thread everyday I just haven't had much time to respond to threads.  As for me my training has been going well.  I am going to do New Orleands 70.3 next weekend so we will see how that goes.  I am going into that race just winging it and have been sticking to my Lake Placid training plan although I will start tapering for New Orleans probablly Wed. of next week.  I am now signed up for Kansas 70.3 in June also so hopefully b/w these two races I can work out all my details for Placid.

Training? Oh yeah, I keep having to remind myself that I signed up for an Ironman last July. I ran a lot this winter (50+ mile weeks), but just a little swimming and biking.

Problem is, I keep finding these Ultras I want to run. 50 miler last weekend, 100k in a couple weeks, then I HAVE to say "No more" until Lake Placid except a marathon June 5th. This weekend I need to get my act together! Weekend long rides have gotta start NOW!

I am alive and getting myself going on the training plan. Soooo haaapppppyyy to finally be outside on the bike (and able to commute on the bike again as well)!

Going down to ride the course in June as everyone tells me it is one to do beforehand if you can. Can wait to finally see this mirror lake.

Hi ALL,

I've been following this tread for some time now and would like to introduce myself:

Why don't we start off with a few questions...

1. Is this your first IM?  - YES
2. Have you done LP before? - NO
3. What are your goals for the 2010 race? - Successfully complete full IM race
4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race? - Closest to my home (NYC)
5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc) - I was able to get many answer by reading this tread and currently working on my race nutrition plan by trying different options/choices depending on the race day weather conditions.

Dream Chaser - The April fools joke was priceless and I had my wife totally fall for that. I told her that I am deferring the race to 2012 because of the new bike course.

Got a chance to do 3 hours outdoor bike ride last weekend and looking forward to the warm weather ahead for 5+ hours bike rides.

Funny training stories?

I fell off my trainer this morning.  Had Shaun move the CD.01 onto the Computrainer so I could compare watts on the CT and the Quark. Did the first 30 minutes on the CT, then my bike fell off. Shaun hadn't swapped the skewers and the CD.01 skewer jammed up the CT and I completely tipped over and fell off when I stood up to clim a "hill." Pulled the CD.01 off and finished the bike on the Cycleops. Lovely.

While I was incredibly pissed, in retrospect it was pretty funny.
