kmac1346 - 2012-10-17 6:33 PM I wonder what the odds are that Leanda Cave still shows up to race this,  now that she has won Kona?   On the one hand, she'd immediately validate for next year and wouldn't have to worry about it, on the other hand, I think all would forgive her if her prep between Kona and Arizona was less than optimal and she decided, well, maybe there is another race to validate at next year.

I was wondering the same thing.

For those of you who had done this race before - Do you guys think a front Zipp 1080 wheel is too deep?  I understand it can get pretty windy during the bike.

Thank you and see all soon!

I'll be on 1080's front and back and am hoping to fine.  I understand it's either a headwind or tailwind.  Never seen it referred to as a crosswind.

Are you heavy or quite lite?  If you weigh 100 pounds, then I'd worry.

I would be nervous with a 1080 on the front wheel with this course being very congested.  In my opinion the front wheel is where the wind affects you the most.  If it's not a side wind it's no big deal, but if it's windy and it's from the side then it could use up a decent amount of energy.  Just my $0.02

stretch goal: 12:30

realistic:  13

My swim is horrid and will take me two hours - how sad is that, but bike should be done in 6, the run in 4:30.

But if I do better than last year's first try at it: 14:45, I will be happy?

A reminder on the dangers of tri training - a couple days ago a fellow IMAZ hopeful, Monica Caban, was out on a training ride In San Antonio and was hit from behind by a truck.  Her spinal cord was severed.  I don't mean to be morbid, but on race day, take a moment to thank whatever God is yours that you made it to the race safely, and in your final weeks - be safe!

I'm just looking to finish, I been all over the map with work and my training schedule combined with bad luck and family situations one right after another.Last week I was in Indy, this week in Virginia, next week working 13 hour days, then to Missouri next weekend. After that things will settle down' but then it's taper time.My only goal is to finish now, on paper I have my self at 15 hours, but anything under 17 is good enough for me with how little training I have done. Was originally looking at 13 hr a goal, 14 hr, b gaol, finish c goal. Now it just take it easy and finish.Looking at 1.5 for swim7 on bike 6 on run and 30 min (very generous) for t1+2

This is my first IM, so while I have a thought about a time goal, I don't have any real way of knowing whether its realistic or not.  This is also my first marathon.  I have a pretty good idea about how the swim and the bike will go, the run is really just a guess.  So, taking into account all I've read about setting race goals:

1.  Finish

2.  Finish and don't end up in medical

3.  Execute a solid bike pace with proper hydration and nutrition

If I do that, then I think it will be a good day/evening.  I'll then see what the time comes out to.

I know, sort of a cop out on the time, but my second HIM I really chased a time on the bike, resulting in working too hard.  The run was a low speed flame out, so I'm really trying to be disciplined about executing my bike pacing and not chasing a time.  In 2014, when I do another IM, then I'll have a better idea about a time.

Sounds like I should be crossing paths with plenty of you out there.  Not really goals since I sincerely want to just cross the line with enough energy to pose for the camera, but I'm guessing:

1:30-1:40 for the swim.  Eat and drink in T1...I figure 10 minutes, but as long as I'm on the bike by 9 I'm happy.

6:30-6:45, but wind is a huge variable, though.

The run is a big question mark as well.  I'm managing 10:00 for my long runs up to 18 miles so far, on not quite recovered legs from riding the day before and swimming the morning of, but that's still not IM conditions.  If I can keep it to 11:00, then I guess 4:45ish for the run? Sound realistic?

I have tried to predict my finish at three different IM's and have learned one thing. I can't predict my time. Way too many variables. Will it be really windy? Could effect bike by an entire hour and slow down the run. Will it be really hot? Depletes all your resources on the bike and makes for a really long run. I am capable and hopeful of a 1:10 swim, 5:45 bike, and 4:30 run. Throw in some transition times and I hope to be right around 12:00 hours. None of this years races have been very good predictors of this kind of time though, been a rough year. Fortunately it feels like I'm hitting my stride right now and workouts feel good.

Goal: Cross the finish line with my wife.

My first one I was all worried about time and such. This one we're going to take it easy, stop for pictures, chat it up with others and ourselves. Finish hand in hand with smiles on our faces.

Then head to Vegas for some REAL fun.

If I were to bet, I would think your run will be closer to 1-2 minutes slower per mile than your training pace.  I'm in the same ballpark as most of you guys.

Last year, it was 1:15 on the swim, 6:00 on the bike, and 5:00 on the run.  Which was almost 90sec slower per mile than my training pace.  Mostly because the last half mary turn more into a run/walk.  Obviously lack of fitness or pacing since I was on my training pace for the first 13 miles.

I'm just saying in MY experience,  the fact I have been moving for 10 hours already, and have a long swim and bike on my body, that last 10 miles are not like any 10 miles I run during training.  It's hard (for me) to estimate the pace I can do those last miles based on training runs.

That's awesome.  I hope the two of you have a fun day.

I don't really have any time goals and don't really want to set any as you never know what the day will bring.   Yes, I have them in my mind, but my main goal is to enjoy the day and finish with no issues.  As long as I accomplish that, I'll be happy.

Thanks, I will seriously think about this one.  I might just go and rent an 808 or even 404 to be super safe!

I have one goal and that is to finish (hopefully with a smile!!)

If I had to estimate my times:

Swim - 1:15

Bike -  6:30

Run - 6 - 6:30

Going in to this I really thought I would loose some weight, but I have learned that doesn't always happen. That will be the #1 issue especially on the run.

Ugh. Hate hearing these stories. Makes me want to do all of my rides indoors on the trainer...

Thoughts and prayers to your friend. Hope she gets well soon.

ONE MONTH!!!

Okay, anyone else freaking out now?  Cuz I KNOW I am! As for my goals...

1)  Don't die

2)  Finish... eventually

3) Finish in under 17 with my hubby, with a smile on my face, and with a desire to do another one.

(*super secret goal... 1:15 swim; 6:00 bike; 6:00 run... but don't tell anyone

Edited due to ridiculously hopeful time estimates, I've now slapped myself and re-evaluated with something more realistic

Unfortunately, there was an accident last saturday in the Malibu area, Marisela Echeverria was crushed by a MTA bus on Pacific Coast Highway.  She was training for the IM Arizona.   She unfortunately had to cancel on an earlier IM (CDA) because he father had passed away.  As others as said, be safe.  It is crazy out there and there a ton of people who dont care about cyclist.
