I'm sure your 1/2 mary will be awesome, I'm glad you are formulating another race plan that will give you a great opportunity to enjoy the race, much like your trail race. My husband and I really want to get out of here. My pay is dismal, and our living expenses keep going up. Sending Get the Job thoughts your way. May one Manatee leave California for Washington to make room for another Manatee in Cali. Good plan! Hey ... then Felicia could be "thinking" Oceanside 70.3 instead of Kansas ... lol Actually the anticipated/possible move made me think I better hurry up and run on the yellow brick road before I leave here. I'm not too keen on an ocean open water swim. Hey BTW, if by total random chance you have an in person interview first week of October I'll be in San Diego
We don't have any SoSal Manatees do we? |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() cdban66 - 2012-09-20 9:57 PM I've been a morning runner since I started. Prior to that I was at the gym lifting at 5:00 am, it is just how I roll. When I started running, I had no light, I just found routes in the neighborhood that had street lights. Last Christmas I received an Energizer headlamp. It worked, was a bit heavy, but functional. It freed up the morning runs a bit. It has bit the farm, as I am a bit sweaty, and it was not the best piece of equipment. I just picked up a Princeton Byte, which is real lightweight and has a few different settings. And it was under $20 at Sports Authority. The drawback is that it has no red back light (although in fairness, neither did the Energizer). As we move towards fall, there is more running in darkness for some of us, I imagine. Is anyone else using a light, or considering a light this year? If you use one, what one do you use and why? If you don't and you run in the dark, are you comfortable with that? Thanks all, have a great day! I am so fortunate I live in an area full of triathletes, cyclists and runners - beach tracks and roads alike are well trodden whatever time of day I seem to go! I don't run before 5am and in winter that's plenty dark but I stick to the well lit road where all the cyclists go. I see lots of other runners - this is a very affluent piece of real estate too so I never feel threatened and spend time looking at beautiful houses! I've never run with a lamp and we're coming into summer now so won't need to - maybe next winter though could be an option. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TriAya - 2012-09-21 1:03 AM Sigh. I've been having some bad one-sided headaches lately and wrote them off as part of the sinus infection / aftermath /whatever. I went to the dentist today for a broken tooth (been broken since last week or before but couldn't get in 'til now). Good news is that's fixable; one root canal and a lot of pain and grumbling now, but it's been treated and I'll get the permanent crown next week. He also looked at another tooth (hindmost molar) that suddenly became very sensitive (okay, flat-out painful too) a few days ago. Yesterday when I had that really lousy day I had woken up with a headache and could just not get with it all day, and was running a low fever. Same story today. Turns out the tooth is badly infected. It's already had two root canal treatments so now it's just got to go. But the infection is yucky enough that it's infecting me systemically and the dentist (he's actually a U. Mich trained maxillofacial surgeon) would like it to clear up a little bit before yanking the tooth. He knows I'm an athlete and he said absolutely no training this week and then not for two weeks after the tooth removal. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! Right now, right smack at peak phase training for Ironman! Shyte. I feel like I can't catch a break. Maybe Ironman will just be a case of whenever I have enough accumulated base built up and get lucky with good conditions and everything coming together on the day. Deep down, I am very grateful, even joyful that I can have these things treated and have the means to do so. I'm just really unhappy about outside things right now. And feeling rather sorry for myself, which I find very distasteful. And I'm whining. So attractive. People have real problems and I know this isn't one of them. I just need to sulk and hoooOOOoooooowl for a bit. I never consider toothache to be whining - far from it - up there with childbirth! Don't sweat the Busso Ironman - train for NZ, you're about 25 weeks out I think so 5 weeks of taper then ramp it up. If it comes together then all good. I've not booked my ticket for Busselton so don't worry on that front - I was going to wait to see how you're doing before I commit! Get yourself healthy - without health we don't got sh*t. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() KansasMom - 2012-09-21 1:26 AM Off training topic . . . If those of you who are of the praying kind could say prayers for me, and others of you think positive thoughts . . . I have applied for a new position in a southern California college. My husband and I really want to get out of here. My pay is dismal, and our living expenses keep going up. (I'm not going to blame any particular political party; I actually think that this is our "new normal," and I'm not expecting anyone to improve my financial situation but myself -- thus the proposed job change.) The position has not been advertised, and my friend who works there doesn't think they will advertise it if they like me. They have contacted me for a phone interview, so that should happen this week or next. It would be better for us in so many ways. As my husband said the other day, he and I have never had a re-boot. When we got married, he moved into my house. Granted, my ex husband barely lived there two years -- not even, actually -- but my husband has never really felt like it is "his" house -- even though he's lived there for seven plus years. I just want to be sure that we make the right decision, or at least the best decision for us and our family. Oh lots of positive thoughts coming your way - SoCal - how awesome would that be! |

We did this: 1. 6:40 The goal being to cruise through first 5 miles and finish fast. Well, I wasn't exactly cruising. I think it was more like struggling to hang on for my life but I was in a pack of 4 other girls and they all seemed to be doing something similar so at least I wasn't alone. Also, my sock had slid down at some point and my shoe shaved all the skin off my right heel so I finished with a shoe full of blood. Gotta love Wednesdays!!!! Go you!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, trying to catch up. Adrienne--yep, those are my per km times. And I don't know that I could do them with a foot full o'blood. **Genuflects** Felicia: Good luck, prayers that it works out as it should, and awesome pic! I have no Scottish heritage, but did a lot of Highland dancing as a child, and wore a few kilts and frilly shirts.... Yanti: Ouch. Headaches are yucky. Headaches because of infections HURT. A little indulgence in the woe-me's is ok once in awhile. Feel better quickly, but listen to the doc. Jo: glad nothing serious with DH. TJ: Never been on a group ride, but suspect I would enjoy it like I enjoy Masters. I'm sure you will learn a lot. Go for it. I'm sure I've missed someone/something. I hope everyone is having a good week. I was meant to run today, but had a long busy day at work and decided to rest this evening. Swimmin' in the AM! Edited by bcraht 2012-09-20 8:51 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone--latest news: Friend in the hospital--she is slowly recovering, they know there was some sort of "electrical issue" involving her heart--it was not a heart attack, but they are not exactly sure what it was--possibly a stroke or SOMETHING. In any case, she seems to be doing okay. She posted on facebook through some voice recognition stuff on her phone, so that was good to see. Thank you all for the many prayers sent out this way--I know they helped. School/financial aid--nada yet. You didn't really think there was going to be an answer yet, right?!?! I was told on Tues. (when I was supposed to know for sure) that I would learn my fate today. Instead, I got a notice that I needed to meet with a counselor as my paper work was "incomplete or insufficient". I met with someone today, she told me that I needed to finish the 2nd page of my appeal--then discovered that the second page was no longer able to be seen, changed, or sent in! so she said not to worry about that. I was also to send in a letter stating the basic timeline of my community college career and transfer, to show how I went from a recent high school grad with NO career/college goals to a 20-something who had sudden inspiration to get my AS degree in anthro and transfer to CSUS. Basically, how I went from taking any old class to taking needed classes ONLY. So I did that immediately after school today, and also pointed out how I did not use ANY type of financial aid UNTIL I began attending CSUS. Anyway, we shall see what this leads to--the appeals deadline is Monday--so as of that point, there is nothing further I can do--I can't change, re-appeal, or submit anything by this point. If I get my aid, I will continue; if not, my college career is finished until I am independently wealthy, and I basically wasted 20 years of my life and $30,000+. On the bright side, I was so angry (at myself mainly, my parents--for making me attend college with no goal in mind--, and the college itself), I did manage a 7.40 mile hilly run. It was a good anger management tool--I'm still worried/depressed/somewhat angry, but at least something good was done. I tackled a pretty extreme hill on that run, so that was nice too. |

What will be will be and for a good reason. Well done on the run! Nothing like being all fired up for a run! Glad your friend is doing okay and able to communicate - hopefully they can fully diagnose and then treat her condition soon. xxx |

I got invited to a group ride this Saturday by my Masters coach. The planned route is about 25 miles and is on routes that I do on a regular basis. Some people will be doing a shorter route, it's kind of divided between people with upcoming sprints vs. OLYs. I've never been on a group ride before so there is the fear of being dropped. Also my schedule says to do 35 miles. I have 2 weeks till my OLY. Aaaaannnnnnd I only have my tri-bike. My roadie is on long-term loan to an aspiring 13 year old triathlete. What say the Mad-Manatees? Group ride. If the location is close enough, ride to/from the ride as warm up and cool down to get time in the saddle. Remember to stay out of aero when you are drafting and have fun! Yup. 25mi where you're struggling to keep up is worth 35 miles of steady ... seems like a perfect long ride 2 weeks out from an Oly. Have fun! |

![]() | ![]() Kate: glad they found out what was going on with your friend, that is half the battle. Now they know what to look for and treat. Sucks about your school funding. Keeping my fingers crossed for you! Ann-Marie: smart move. Racing sick doesn't sound like any fun, and as you said, you don't want to jeopardize your HIM training and health further by racing sick. Rest. Relax. Eat chicken noodle soup. Drink lots of fluids. Sleep. Heal. Jen: same instructions as Ann-Marie! Now a question for the collective wisdom of the manatees: I'm doing a 30 mile easy bike tomorrow morning with some friends. According to the Weather Channel, temp at 7am will be around 61 degrees, partly cloudy, winds ~8 mph. We'll probably start the ride at 7:30. Since we are going at a fairly leisurely pace, I'm guessing we'll be out there til near 10am. (not sure of the ability of the one person we're riding with) By 10 it is supposed to be 69 degrees, mostly sunny and winds ~10 mph. What do I wear? Long sleeved jersey (non-fleeced)? Short-sleeves with arm warmers? A light jacket (sleeves come off to create vest) with short sleeves underneath? I'm not overly well-versed in dressing for different temps on the bike. Hmm, I think i would wear the arm warmer option and gloves. Although, if it were any colder then 61, i'd go with the jacket (and gloves). Thanks for the reassurance i'm making the right call on my race. |

I really would love an i-phone (to go with my other apple products!), but i get a cell phone from my agency that i can use for personal calls too; so i can't justify the expense. It looks like we will eventually move to the i-phone, but until that happens I have i-phone envy!

I wouldn't do it. We are downgrading from paying for 2 phones to paying for just mine. My husband's company is paying for his Galaxy S3, so I got to splurge a little on the iPhone. I'm so excited!
