Thanks for all the great advice.  I have never really done much as far as endurance running.  I was a running back when I played football, so my focus was sprinting, I never had to running more then 40 yards at a time.  A few years ago I bought a Klein road bike, but have never really train with it, my longest ride was 75 miles. I went for one ride last year and did 50 miles off the couch.  As for the swim I know how to swim well enough to have fun with my kids at the pool.

I hope that gives some kind of back ground.

hey ben.  i don't think you'll have any problems following one the plans here on BT to bust out a some races this year and see improvement in your times with each new race.  i also think a goal of an OLY to wrap the season up is an awesome idea.  now, looking at your logs, you're gonna want to do something about hitting the water.

when is the first race you are eyeing?

DougRob - 2009-12-27 12:22 PM Chris sorry about your wife's grandmother.

I had a milestone this AM. I just ran the farthest I have ever run in my life: 13.61 miles in 2:15. I am sore, especially my finicky hamstrings. *Whew*. Anyway the marathon training continues. Those numbers will be growing in the coming weeks. My coach has me doing 22 miles in February some time.

Doug

That is so AWESOME.  The distance and the pace.  If I remember right your marathon amd the one I am doing are on the same weekend....03.21.10....  Is that right?

You will be ready for that 22 before you know it.  What are you thinking about for your nutrition?  I am still thinking about mine after my "issues" at Augusta HIM.

Headed out for my 8 miler right now.

fattyfatfat - 2009-12-27 12:28 PM so today's ride.  i was freezing cold. foot was numb by 10 miles into the ride.  i don't have any cold weather gear so i'm just thankful the fashion police and aero police were not out today.   the wind is up so anytime i'm heading north, which was most of the way out, i'm flying along at a stellar 14 mph.   i'm trying a different nutrition scheme and my stomach NOT happy.  basically i wanted to throw my bike into the bird sanctuary i ride by and walk home.

i get to my turnaround 22 miles from the house. i slow down to stop and turn around.  unclip my right shoe.  and fall over to the left.

as i laid there in the middle of the road you fools are the first thing that pop in my head.  first i smile, then laughed a little, then i could barely get up i was laughing so hard.  finally back on the bike settled in heading to the house and realized how freakin' happy and lucky i was to be out there.

i'm heading to warm shower...

edit... damn i forgot one of most important things..  THANKS MG!!!!

Outstanding job to get the ride in with that kind of weather.  Funny about the fall...assuming you are OK...is that we have all done it or will do it soon   And what a great mindset that we all need to remember sometime....We are VERY luck to just be out there.

I just started using a fuel belt and have not figured the nutrition plan out. I will take fulladvantage of the aid stations as I have a fairly iron stomach. I expect I will be bringing some GU's and some shot blox.

First Happy birthday Sam...

Next I was thinking about going for a run but thought instead I would see what you are all up to. We had a great Christams with the family and everyone went home through out the day yesterday.  My nephew started first at a bout 6:30 AM. His flight was leaving for Korea at noon on Satruday and he gets back to Korea late Sunday night his time.

NOw after reading all of the posts I once again have the inspiration to go out for a run. See ya'all later.

Woohoo!!! Congrats Big time! Nice numbers!

kt65 - 2009-12-27 9:44 AM

Some of you guys might remember that last year on Dec. 31st, I was 2.5 miles short of 500 miles running for 2008, and you guys wanted me to go do the run that night (I did not)... I will hit 1200 miles today after my morning run!  Holy smokes, training for a marathon will increase your run volume, that's for sure!  My bike, I will hit 2200 miles by the 31st, I went over 200,000 yds swimming earlier this month.

The crazy part is looking at the hours spent training this year come to about 400 hours so far.  Back in 2008, about 250 hours total.  Goals in the last five days are to continue to drag myself out of a warm bed when it is still dark outside and get moving.  If I keep changing my workouts to later in the day because it's dark or cold out or I have other things to do, I know it'll make it easier to just put it off until the next day.

The best goals that I met were to stay injury free and to continue to improve on the swim (which is easy since I have a lot to improve on!)

Chris, so sorry to hear about your wife's grandmother.

SSMinnow - 2009-12-27 5:43 AM I know it is not Wednesday, but with less than a week to go in the New Year,  do you have any volume goals you are trying to break?

I did a quick check of my own '09 S/B/R and while I don't train to volume, I was suprised to see I will break 4000 miles on the bike this year (a 20% increase) and I will have swim, swam, swum? 200 miles, (a 90% increase! I wonder why I am not faster???).  I knew running would be downbut had no idea how much(1500, -40%)  given the switch to triathlon and two injuries this year......no other '09 goals but to heal.....

So anything you want to accomplish in the last 5 days of the year?..... and drinking an extra six pack doesn't count John, Andy and Tony.....and neither does J&C Birdy.

a 12 pack then.  ;-).   none really.  just trying to get my head around what i did this year.  HA. if i can do this anyone can.

Hot in DC is upper 90's.

We seem to be rather lucky and get both ends of the spectrum, hot and humid all summer, and cold and dreary in the winter.

I second the 305.  I never leave for a run without it.
Was originally concerned with the size and weigth of this one, but the 305 has never bothered me...worn it two years now.   Thought about the waterproof watch, but don't really think it would add much value for me.

Crapp I should have gotten it while it was on sale for $137 on Amazon.  One of my friends at the gym told me she loves the Garmin..poop.

She says you cant use it indoors though but she thought you could use the 310 indoors because you can disable the GPS.  Is that true?

Thanks. :-)

icky43 - 2009-12-27 2:39 AM It's midnight and I'm watching the 2008 Kona Tri. and looking over all of your up coming races, and looking at all the races I have access to.  As a newbie to the sport, what is reasonable to expect?  How long do I need to build a base before doing my first Sprint? Is wanting to do an Oly by the end of the year to much?  Any advice would be great.

Thanks

You definitely have enough time to get a strong base for a sprint.  And an end of season Olympic is VERY realistic.
GO FOR IT!

Get online and look at training plans (sprint and olympic).  Get your calendar out and work the dates (training plan to race).  Then sign up for the race(s).   With a training plan and a race in front of you it is suprising how you will be motivated.

i'm heading to warm shower...

edit... damn i forgot one of most important things..  THANKS MG!!!!

I think I'll try one in May, I have about five or six that I'm trying to decide between, I've been sitting here all morning with my credit card in hand trying to map out the year.

I start swimming with a coach in Jan, she is my daughter swim coach so she and my 9 year old can teach me a thing or two.  It will be fun to train with my daughter.

As far as sprints go is it reasonable to do one every other month or is that to much?

Loved the bike story, been there done that.

Very reasonable, in fact once you get bitten you may look to race more often.
