Fred D - 2012-10-23 9:30 PMIt's wrong to compete on the stuff and I will keep saying it again and again. I know your thoughts on doping Shane and I know you agree with me, but I see it partially as my job to keep at this stuff.
It's definitely something that is very important to me and I get frustrated when athletes don't realize the importance of anti-doping policies. Just saw this on ST -makes me sad.Shane
Although I am not naive enough to believe that AGers don't dope to an extent, I have to believe that the hotel management is referring to saline drips (or thinks they are). No hotel tha wants to keep its occupancy certificate would knowingly allow blood bags to be transported in. It's a potentially infectious bodily fluid. And I hear self administered post race saline drips are, if not common, certainly not unknown

I really hope this is the case as well.  Really, really hope....

I thought someone photoshopped that as a joke.  I didn't think it was real...

That's what I thought, too.

Fred D - 2012-10-24 8:49 AM Question for the group? I have been feeling incredibly fatigued the last week or so. To the point where it is an effort to do basic things. Could be work which has been busy, could be the running 6 days a week and trying to bike a lot as well. I actually am wondering if I'm fighting something as I feel tired and achy. Anyone have any other thoughts?
Agree with others; sounds like you need some rest! Shane

Agreed. You also are often underslept ... and unless you've been able to bang down a few consecutive nights of, say, 12 hours' sleep, the effects of that can persist for a long time.

I am considering application to become a chaplain in the US Navy.

Semper Fi Andy.  Good luck with that.  You'll have to change all your "Dough boy" kits to "Sky Pilot".

x whatever

You just did an IM 2 months ago, you're post IM training has been solid, and you've been working a lot lately.  It would be strange if you weren't feeling fatigued.

Kind of related to what Fred was saying about Kona slots and why it's important they fix this problem.

A guy I know is in the same AG as the guy that got banned.

He is quite good, qualified for Kona and Clermont multiple times. He is a coach, instructor and trains 20-24hours per week. He does a lot of this as a coach, teaching spinning, leading group rides.....he has all the best equipment, positioning.....

He has a measured VO2max in the low 70s. Not the greatest swimmer but an uber biker and solid runner. So, good genetics, 20-24hrs training and smart training since he is an experienced coach

We were chatting about it and he just chuckled and said "ya, when that guy shows up, I don't even think of getting a spot...he's an hour faster"

It really struck me.

It will be interesting to see if

a) the guy gets a TUE

b) if he does not, what will his results look like moving forward

This will be a VERY interesting case to follow.

I suspect:

a) he is not getting a TUE; the fact that between getting popped for T and his arbitration he did not apply for a TUE tells me that he knows that he cannot obtain one.

b) he is going to keep using T; he has a bunch of excuses for why he wasn't cheating and has apparently has been taking T (and thinking there is nothing wrong with it) since 2005. To me, this case has all the hallmarks of of a serial cheater who is going to continue to cheat because he feels entitled to do so. I suspect that he will be changing the method he uses for boosting T levels to one that is much harder to detect but that he will not stop cheating (or lose the mirror).

On a serious note Fred, I think sleep is often our most neglected part of recovery.

When you're putting in 100 hour work weeks AND still training, I have a pretty good guess what kind of sleep you're getting.  I'm not saying that in a derogatory way -- I just think you'll bounce back quickly once you get a few of those hours back.

Thanks! I do sometimes think that I can get away with very little sleep, but you are absolutely right, I am sleep deprived. I am on call Friday but then am not for 1.5 weeks, so recovery is coming.

Of course our bodies produce HGH when we sleep, so you might want to get a TUE when you're not on call

Agree. I also think lots of others will use testosterone and rationalize away why they need to 'level' the playing field. I think there are lots of sad concepts here, but truthfully what we are sometimes able to rationalize to ourelves is pretty amazing isnt it?

This is reflected in The Secret Race, in which Tyler and other bike racers did not consider what they were doing as cheating, since everyone was doing it.

Personally, I blame Bill Clinton

Nice!   If I stay on track with BarryP,. I'll just hit 100.  Only done that 3-4 times total since 2005

A BarryP type approach definately makes it easier IMO.

My biking on the other hand...well...I think most of this group will out bike me this month...LOL.
