Hay in the barn, hard work is done, etc etc....   just get to the start line healthy

Yesterday friend and I rode from Malibu to Santa Barbara, with a couple added climbs, and my wife was kind enough to drive SAG.   Short brick run.   Followed by Mac's FIsh & CHips on State Street.  Best lunch ever

Today was the annual pier to pier swim.  Part of a weeklong beach and surf festival.  Switched to the wetsuit division, no point in freezing my buns off.   5/99 AG (large group of Male 30-49), and 12/295 overall for wetsuits.   There's about 1100 overall swimmers.   There's a race report in the forums

Little breakfast with wife and friends, then about 2 went our for a 1:45 run.  12.41 miles, last long weekend done, in the books.  A little bit of tendonitis in the foot post run, but I could not run until race day ad be fine so I am not worried.

Coach has sent the next week and it's very pedestrian.  Very glad to have those long days behind me and to have gotten through for the most part uninjured.

Great job Chris.  I'm now 10 weeks out from Kona and I can't wait till I can say "the hay is in the barn."  I did have one very challenging long ride today.  Instead of our usual 5-6 guys, we only had 3 today, so the pulls came much more frequently, the draft wasn't as big when you came off the front, and I while we knew we had to back down some while pulling, our egos nearly put us all over the edge.  After I was done I sat in the stood in the shade for a few minutes and left my Garmin in the sun just to see how high the temp would read.  100.8 degrees.  Actual temp was probably 89ish.

First -- sorry for crashing the group. I was going to post this in the TT forum, but when I looked around (after many months' absence) it looked, well, the same. And really anybody who might care about this post is on one of a few mentor groups anyway).

It's been a crazy many months, but I'll keep it short: our new, bigger, family is settled and happy. We're used to having little ones again and loving their energy. I've been running but no S/B. I have the green light to take a crack at IM Coeur D'Alene next summer, so if it is still open (haven't checked and I get paid next week so irrelevant until then...) I will sign up and start S/B in a couple of weeks.

Thanks to all those who gave well wishes those many months ago, and apologies to those who sent messages in the meantime -- I had to go cold turkey from BT (and many other things) to get my life in order. Mission accomplished.

Damn it.

Just when I thought I might be able to get by for another year without power-noooooooooo!

Really great explanation. Thanks:)

Power is helpful, but you do have to look at some numbers for it to be of use. Do know that you can still do quite well without it.

You know, Ben, this is a big part of my hesitation.  I am trying to get up to speed on the big picture stuff right now, and I'm not sure I would be able to utilize the PM the way it's meant to be used--at least just yet.  TrainerRoad seems to be helping me a lot, just the virtual power thing, and my riding has improved so much in the last six months that I feel like there's still a lot of room for progress before a PM, but sometimes (often?) I worry that I'm not thinking about the sequence of things correctly.

I feel like I'm right there with you.  I've been using virtual power since November of last year and I love it.  I've been keeping my eye out for a good deal on a PM and just found one a couple weeks ago, so I pulled the trigger.  Now it's all about learning how to use it.

My biggest hope is figuring out how to formulate a training plan that will help me improve -- will tax me just enough, but not push me over the edge.  For the past 6+ months, I just kind of take into account how I'm feeling and pick a TrainerRoad plan with a TSS I feel is attainable, mostly doing FTP intervals, some VO2 max.  But I really have no idea how to put together a plan that will get me up over the next step.  I'm hoping the Training and Racing with Power book will have some thoughts.

I'm just not ready to throw money down on a coach who actually knows what they hell they're doing until after I get my knee injury straightened out.  Doesn't seem to be the wisest use of money to pay someone to just tell them I can't (physically) do what I should be doing.  So here's to learning on my own....and asking probably an annoying number of questions to the SBR Utopians :)

I don't think that number exists.  :)

On another note, I nominated myself for the Darwin Awards this weekend.  Registered for a half marathon in October with the expectation of a PR by 6 ish minutes.  I'm irrational like that...

I doubt it's irrational.  Tell us why you're gonna PR by 6.  Let's hear the method to the madness.

----------------------

OK, Nicole and other TR folks. Two questions:

1) How often do you retest (a regular set interval of time no matter what), or is there some tell-tale sign that you should retest?

2) How do you let the TSS and IF numbers guide you, if at all?  Do you try to do a certain number of rides/week at certain numbers?

I did "Real Rides Race Day" this morning which had a lot of interval work right at and just above FTP (nice session, if you haven't done it already), and I am most definitely missing a gear that I would like on my trainer.  Frick.

Don't use trainer road myself, but training with power is training with power regardless of it being virtual or actually measured.

I don't really test quite as formally as the others may do. I'll just readjust my FTP estimate based on how a couple rides are going, usually the 2 x 20 and the 1 x 20. And that's using both what I hit and how it felt to do so.

I also don't look at the IF for an entire ride so much as what I'll be doing when I'm working, as in what are the intervals being done at.

TSS is helpful in gauging the size of the workout in the sense of physiological cost. Much more useful than mileage or even time alone. The composition of the workout matters. Since intensity can be all over the place for various rides, it tends to give a better sense of size by taking in both the duration and intensity. I'll use it to get some sense of how big the individual rides are and how much I'm accumulating over time. Like how much week in, week out.

And also in being able to do something right afterward with higher intensity being harder, but farther out they seem to become more similar in recovery. So trying to go for a short run after higher intensity intervals (ie A Very Dark Place or Revolver) or a century ride are both kind of awful, but I'll recover sooner from the higher intensity ride with a TSS of 80 or so vs a century with near 300.

I'm like Ben.  I don't use TR, but I mainly pay attention to TSS and NP for a given outdoor ride to make sure I've got the necessary work in.  I also don't test very often just for the sake of testing.  I usually do a couple of time trials each year that are perfect for testing and then make fine tune adjustments to that number throughout the year based on how my shorter workouts are going.

Yeah, this time I've been lucky.  I've had a little issue come up in the last two weeks but I've only missed one prescribed workout in the last several months, a :45 run last week.  I may miss a couple runs in teh next couple weeks, or switch them to elliptical, but I honestly do not think I could have done any more for this race.

Quit that, you are making me look bad...

13th wedding anniversary for Tab and I today.  We got out for a 67 km ride that included stops for cinnamon buns, lunch, americanos and cookies.  A perfect way to spend the day (minus the flat tire).

I was always a very good student .....

BTW, forgot to mention I broke a rear spoke about 70 miles into my 90 miler Saturday.  A bit freaked out now that something like this would happen on race day when the wheel is covered....   Only worry about things you can control....

Happy 13th Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary Arend.

Going to be another relatively easy week for me as I try to freshen up the legs for the only cycling road race I'll do this year.  I won my division in this race last year in a bunch sprint, but my strategy this year is to either get into a small break, shred the field on the climbs, go solo, or blow up trying.  Keeping the rubber down takes priority over winning.

Thanks for the TSS and IF info Ben, Tom and Jason.

I am really just starting to pay atention to these numbers and trying to figure out how to incorporate that info into my training. When I shake the magic 8 ball it says "All signs point to you needing to read the Skiba book".
