Helloooooo Manatees!

It finally feels like my ankle is getting better--there is a slight ache overall, but I have full range of motion without the stabbing pains...I am pretty sure I managed to sprain it when I was throwing the baseball with Clint last Sunday--I slipped near the fence boundary and managed to slip my ankle UNDERNEATH the chain link...and then proceeded to try to yank it back out. I was almost worried, as I couldn't get back under the fence; luckily Clint came over and moved it enough for me to have my leg back. Anyway, no pain then, but it did start aching a little the following day, and then on Tuesday, after still being a bit painful, I twisted it just enough getting into my truck, and then it was over---swelling, pain, you name it....pure awfulness. So much for getting some run training in before next Sunday's 10k.

AND THEN...(Rant time)I have been REALLY angry since Saturday, as I was given a stern lecture at work that day...As most of the Manatees know, I work with a pretty useless coworker in my section of the zoo. He tends to not really care about his work, he doesn't clean the exhibits thoroughly, and will spend most every day complaining. Well on Friday, my supervisor came up to do venomous back up in the reptile house, and asked if we had been keeping up on the frog substrate changes (we're supposed to change out the substrate every 3 months on all amphibians); I said there were a few that needed to be done, and that I will do the exhibits when I weigh them usually (also quarterly). The 2 that weren't done were ones that I didn't weigh (he did, but neglected to change the substrate)  and ones we don't weigh (too small). To be truthful, he had told me that he would do that one because he wanted to "improve" the exhibit. She said "so you have been the only one redoing exhibits?" I told her yes...she knows how he is, and understands my frustrations (for all the good that is!) , and she said she would be talking to our curator. So on Saturday, he calls me into the office and proceeds to tell me how disappointed he is that those two exhibits weren't done, and that we KNEW we needed to be on top of such things...I pointed out that I HAD been doing that and that my coworker had said HE wanted to do the one exhibit and he had weighed the other ones, but I would redo THAT one that day. At which point he told me that it was my fault for not telling my coworker to do those exhibits, and I need to make sure things get done....basically shame on me for not nagging my coworker to do his job. (He told me that we are equals in there, so I have the right to say things to him---even though I seem to be the only one held into high standards in the reptile area. ) I am so pi**ed about this--I already catch up our regular routine in there, I am doing ALL of the exhibit renovations, all of the training, and now I am expected to BABYSIT?!?! its f-ing ridiculous---Not to mention, but this coworker already is incredibly rude---if I make a mistake, he has no problem telling me how stupid I am--he will go out of his way to not do stuff just because he hates the management, and then of course, there is the constant yammering--one of those people who will talk about anything else to pass time (if you try to walk away he follows you---and if someone else is talking, he just talks louder)--I am not one to talk a lot while working, I need to focus. And oh yeah, the 'bright side'? I am not really working with him for at least a month as of next week, as they are training me in another area--so I am just in my "primary" (I say this with much sarcasm and bitterness) area for 6 days....NOT COOL--this means I have to catch up on all the routine crap he is NOT doing and all the projects they need me to do as well in that time.

I will still be working my butt off like always, giving 110%--but I am really wondering why I do try so hard. Its like its never enough on my end, meanwhile he gets paid twice as much to b*tch and moan and not do crap.

Okay, rant over. I think today calls for retail therapy---since I can't quite go out and run my problems away yet (stupid ankle!)

Wow. That really sux! You know you have taken the high road, and that you are much better for the animals but that is hard to accept as consolation when your supervisors don't recognize it AND he gets paid more! I, for one, am glad that you are there to take care of those adorable creatures. It would be awful if their little lives depended on him! {{hugs}}

Me too! I started using Strava for my running on Saturday and thought about using the Australian English speaker so I could pretend it's one of our Manatees Down Under! BTW, love the split announcements in Strava, now that I figured out how to get them

Ugh, that is frustrating!  But if you are 'equals' why does he get paid twice as much?  Sorry that you are having to deal with that.  But glad your ankle is feeling better!

That was a justified rant.

A day great and terrible here today.  First thing this morning was the great part.  My oldest was in a concert at the New England Conservatory and was astounding.  Truly.

Then I got home and snacked quickly then hopped on the drainer for my 2-3 hour ride.  Stopped at an hour.  Empty light came on…  I almost never cut a workout short, but sometimes you have to (I just didn't want to today!).

Worst part is that all this working out is getting in my head - so much time and so many other things to do (or not do).  That ever get to anyone else?  It's like I'm cramming other fun stuff in around a packed workout schedule for a race that's still 4.5 months away.  Feels unbalanced at times...

OK, soft rant over.  Back to smiling and off to the pool in a bit.

Matt

Ah yeah, we all deal with this. I't important to try and keep the balance though.

Hang in there and keep on smiling

Welp, just completed week 4 of marathon training with a nearly 90 mile week. I can't believe how fast it's going!

I'll be in LA this weekend where I plan to get lots of running in but nothing too serious as I need a little step back.

After that it will probably be two three week cycles capped by a Half Marathon. I haven't run a half in a long time so that should be fun!

Adrienne, you have run 11 more km so far this year than I have BIKED!  Welp indeed! .  Since I seem to have a hard time getting motivated to get on my bike, perhaps that will be my challenge: to bike as far as you run this year!

I think I'd be happy if my run miles plus my bike miles added up to Salty's run miles! Whew!

Haha yeah, it's a lot.

Already up there? Probably a bit longer before I even hit that in a month again.

Do you get your running miles pretty high while tri training?

I could keep the mileage at 40 mpw or a little over for much of the year and stay balanced in all 3 without too much difficulty. I *think* when wanting to push the run more I could get well up into the 50's and break 60 at times. Regularly being up in the 60's was a bit much and would have to back down elsewhere to keep it going. A year ago I did get monthly totals up to 280 and 320, but had backed the bike down a lot from where I normally would be. Still enough for some, but I really like to bike. Backed it down after that as it felt like I was running for the sake of running and losing track of a well balanced scheme. Both within running itself and a bit overall across the 3 sport.

For now, it's just a couple times a week. Still haven't gotten back mentally to where I'd really like to run a bunch again, but think that will take a long time to get too. For now at least I am liking the runs I'm doing a bit more, so much better than a few months ago. I'll probably add in up to a couple more easy runs in there eventually, but not going to push things. Not looking at anything longer than 10k for this year, so isn't as big of a deal to just get through it.

I'll start by saying that Salty, you is nuts!  Awesome - yes - but crazy.    I'm not going near that mileage…  I'll be curious to hear how the high volume helps in the HM.  I'm betting that the LSD is going to translate to a veeeeery fast HM.  What are you targeting relative to past performances?

Ben, from a miles standpoint in tri, were those numbers for an IM build or shorter distance?  I'm looking at my numbers last year and forward as I roll up to a June HIM and I don't think I'll be much over 40 for many weeks.  I'm also in the 12-15 or so hour a week, tops, so maybe that's a big part of it (I can't see your logs - which is cool - just saying why I'm asking a question that might be obvious otherwise).

I know at the end of the HIM last summer, which I ran off a mostly Olympic distance plan, I had nothing left in the tank (dropped about 10-15 sec/mile the last 2, IIRC, and couldn't elevate my HR to threshold - legs just didn't have the power over the last ~2k).  This year, I'm coming in with a bigger base and a full training cycle (~6months rather than 2.5) and hope to be able to both up the speed and hold it through the finish (and then collapse into the beer tent), but am wondering if my plan will have sufficient volume for the muscular endurance needed for that...

Thanks!

Matt

Thanks!

I actually had a really good swim last night (for me - even doing multiple 800's!), so that helped.  And I struck a blow for balance this morning and flew again for the first time in about 5 years.  Don't want to let that currency ever slip again (and I feel way more human now for taking 2 hours on a rest day and doing something outside of tri).

Balance, Grasshopper, balance… (showing my age with that reference)

Thanks for the sentiment (and the undercurrent of HTFU - need to do that every now and again).

Matt

The HM is just a B race (tune up) for a marathon in April. In my experience, the high mileage has certainly been good for the HM distance, even when it's not the main focus. I PRed with a 1:27 low last year (sans adequate taper as it was also marathon build-up) and would be happy with a PR this year That's as specific as I can get at the moment.
