Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread In '08 it was the usual IM fare. Gatorade Endurance and water for fluids. Power gels, oranges, bananas for food. That was the bike stations. Run stations are a frickin' buffet. It is insane the amount of crap they have at them! I carry two gel flasks (with 5 Gu in each) on the bike and one fluid bottle in the cage on the bike. Simply grabbed a new one (bottle) at each aid station. If I wanted something solid I'd grab a banana piece every now and then. I don't carry anything on the run unless I decide to bring another gel flask. |

Carrying a gel flask on the run is very helpful as you don't need to deal with the individual packets at the aid stations and you can suck some done prior to an aid station and then grab some water as you run through to wash it down. |

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Switching back to the swim topic briefly because I want to brag. At the end of my set today (3200 yds total btw) I had an all out 100. I put down a 1:07! That's 6 seconds faster than I ever have before. I have seen my times click slowly down as form gets better. So the moral is even if you're a rock (read: Rick) you can look like a fish from time to time. In regards to clothing, I will be wearing my 2 piece tri suit from start to finish. Easy to go #1 & #2. Just don't go #2 on the bike...I think that's a line I won't cross. Nutrition: All Infinit all the time. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread In '08 after my lessons and a few more yards I threw down a 1:17 in the pool (short course yards) with open turns and an in-pool start. So anything's possible! |

Master 1572 PA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread KWin - 2010-02-03 9:55 AM except if it's cool, will add a vest, armwarmers and knee warmers because the early miles of the bike will be freezing in those wet clothes Keep in mind you will then have those for 56 miles. Which depending on how fast you are, could mean you've got those until say 11:15am. I find in a race stuff like being cold doesn't phase you nearly as much b/c there is so much excitement & other stuff you are focused on. |

Yes but a great many people find a tri suit or tri top and bottom perfectly comfortable. I do. I have worn one peice tri suits in races. Using the tiolet in one isn't a big deal at all. Now my tri racing uniform are a seperates top and bottom and I can swim/bike/run in it all day. My recomendation would be to buy your club's outfil, top and bottom, and train in it to see how it feels. Don't just assume it won't work for you, these are designed for the whole race to wear comfortably. No way I would wear a tri suit in anyting over an olympic. If you have to use the bathroom, major inconvenience. this is true. definitely try different combos in racing. If I could go tri suit for an IM, id probably wear one. and if I could go 112 miles in tri shorts, Id be wearing those from the get go in the swim. I will try some tri shorts on long training rides and see how it does.... based on what I've used thus far, I see myself doing what I mentioned..... but you gotta try all the combinations, and if you are comfortable using a certain combo that means less changing, use it. Mike, the more time you spend in transition the more of a chance of me finishing ahead of you, so please: take your time in transition. Heck bring four different sets of cycling outfits and sip a latte while you figure out which one to wear I say this cause your likely going to beat me on the bike so I'll need as much time as possible to catch you on the run. Like Bryan said, I am K.I.S.S at LP. I'm putting on my team Tri top and Tri bottom. Then throwing my wetsuit on over it. Come out of the swim, have wetsuit stripper rip my suit off, then I just have to throw on socks, sunglasses, helmet and Garmin and I'm off. I've never worn cycling pants ever, so I'm not going to start now. My Sugoi tri-shorts have a nice comfy pad, and they always dry within 10 minutes of being out of the water and on the bike. For nutrition I am sticking to clif bars, gu gels, gatorade and water -- the same exact stuff I use every single day in training. I think/ hope this plan is Simple enough!!
so keep changing to a minimum to save 43 seconds, but load your bike with 8 pounds of nutrition that is already on the course? thats a joke, such a ST comment.... and if you want to catch me on the run, you better plan on throwing down a 3:15 or lower 26.2..... smalk talk back on! YEAH!!!! First Off!!! Gatorade and water are on the course. Six gels and 2 clif bars weigh, what... 1/4 of a pound? Duuuuude, I think the Recovery week is getting to you. Throwing down a 3:15 stand-alone on that course (based off how challenging I've been told it is) would be commendable. Here's a reality check: the 2nd place Male35-39 threw down a 3:24 Marathon. If you have a decent swim and bike and throw down a sub 3:15, get ready for KONA! |

Keep at it and you'll be holding 1:40 for 20x100 before you know it---then you can work on that 3:15 marathon |

If not then I'll suck it up and just be cold for a while until I warm up on those hills! The key if it's cold is to wear things you can take off in layers. Ie, don't wear a long sleeve Jersey when you can wear arm warmers. Don't wear tights when you can wear knee warmers. Stuff like that. You can always slide your arm warmers down for temperature control. Just an idea since I survived IM MOO '06 and WISH I had thought of things like clothing... |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread If you are between 1:05 and 1:30 you are going to be in the mess and the bike will be crowded irregardless. But in that timeframe you may be hard pressed to find room in the tent. At FL in '07 (1:20 swim) I didn't even bother to go into the tent and put everything on outside of it and just tossed my bag to a volunteer. At LP in '08 (1:18 swim) I went into the tent because it was raining. It was crowded as hell but I got a seat. |

Expert 1023 Malvern, England | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I swam a 1:07 something in 2007 and it wasn't that crowded in the changing tent. Not empty but enough room to get a seat and helpers around. I suspect that might be cos I am a female and less females overall in the race? Jackie D |
