Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, I'll put it out there. I'm totally freaking out. Never done anything longer than a sprint, but been training heavily since November. Longest ride so far has been 4 hours on the indoor trainer (watching Spartacus episodes on Netflix lol...). Did a half-iron bike/run brick last Saturday. Longest run to date will be a 15m run tomorrow (longest in training is only 20m). I've been faithful to my training plan and have dropped from 219 to 183 since last July. Hopefully 178 by race day. No major injuries. Some shoulder pain but think I pulled muscle during weight training. Doesn't affect my (slow-) swim at all. Right foot is sore around my arch but also feels more muscle related. Trust the training plan... trust the training plan... I utter that mantra daily, but when I see a 12+ hour day ahead of me I still freak out on the inside lol... My confidence will be screaming down the Keane descent since I'm a single-track mountain biker and love the adrenaline rush (and can handle the bike at speed). Just hoping I have enough for the run after. Fear is good, right? |

So what if you can't understand what he says half the time. docswim24 - 2011-04-08 1:29 PM igorkiev - 2011-04-07 2:46 PM Solid choices above. I would add: Rocky 2 Rocky 3 Rocky 4 As we're getting closer to 100 days mark before the "cannon" goes off it becomes more important (at least for me) to keep the motivation and the focus in tact. With that said, I am sharing the list of most inspiring movies that I've seen and hopefully their stories will come in handy while plowing though the "tough" parts of the IMLP course. Please feel free to share your ideas. So far on my list I have (not in any particular order):
![]()
All those Rocky movies; is that to develop mental toughness, overcoming the demons, like if you can get through that torture you can get through anything? ![]() ![]() One of my favorite movie lines of all time is from Rocky, "if I can go the distance, then I'll know I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood" |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My biggest fear? Have run 15 marathons and have always rested before the start. Now I am going to swim 2.4 and bike 112 before the start! Holy crap, should be a great experience. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dweeks, I had the same fears you did, I finished over 25 marathons prior to my first IM. On race day after the bike I just started running like a normal marathon. After the first mile, I got into my normal running groove and said to myself, "just keep this up as long as you can and see what happens." It went fine other than a few extra pit stops along the way. My IM marathon times (3 IM's) have all been within 5 minutes of my standalone marathons, can't explain how, it just works out. You will be fine on race day, and when you get to the run, think of all the experience you will have. Some have never raced a marathon before doing an IM. Good luck, Jim |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Way to get everyone going DC... Today was a tough one for me. It's a rest day, well doing yard work and family visiting from Germany, but being in the 60's and sunny made me want to do some kind of workout. There is reason for rest days, I have to tell myself on days like this. |

Member ![]() | ![]() ok - so I am so boring - my trainer sessions are the lake placid course with coach Troy (spinervals) or watching Glee or Modern Family with the kids. The course video is excellent and very motivational if you have to ride inside |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What a perfect weather was today for a bike ride. Got myself almost lost twice on the new course and enjoyed it like a child. Did 75 miles today with some decent hills work. 16.8 was my average speed...nothing special, but I know it will feel it on tomorrow's run. Hope everyone got a chance to get outside and finally feel the sun on the face and warm tail wind. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well...ended up doing 3hrs on the trainer because the Project Runway finale was 2hrs instead of 1hr...so I decided to watch it all while on the trainer...I started the hour before. Then I took my Mtn bike out for an hour outside. 4hrs down. First outdoor ride of the season!! I'm glad I didn't take out my tri bike..there were some sections that still had 1cm-1inch of grit on the shoulder. It's super windy out...hopefully it blows all that stuff off the road soon! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alright - I am back in - been participating in a mentor group which has hogged up most of BT time, but it is winding down, and my IMLP specific training is ramping up. And I had one of those days today where it felt like the training is actually working. Anybody else have one of those recently? |

And I had one of those days today where it felt like the training is actually working. Anybody else have one of those recently? Today was one of those days for me as well! My plan was to do a SPRINT today. Had to start in the pool, but was able to run and bike outside and blew away my last sprint time by over 20 minutes! Well, I would have if my transition wasn't going from the pool to the locker room for my car keys, to my car, to getting the bike off the car Good news is that my you guys weren't kidding about the trainer. That is MUCH tougher than the outside riding. I would hammer on the trainer for speed work and had a hard time hitting 20 mph. Same effort outside today brought me into the mid-20s for speed. I'm looking forward to the longer outdoor rides to see how the 4 hour trainer rides have prepared me... |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This whole weekend seemed like one of those times when training was all working out for me. I finished up an indoor TT series at a LBS and rocked it. Great motivator. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like some people had pretty good weekends. It was definitely pretty nice out most of the weekend around Rochester. I was inside most of that time for my training though. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() lots of good training going on! 14 more weeks and we'll be touching down in LP town.... There is nothing like pulling into Lake Placid.....town has a certain feel to it. I was just thinking about this time last year. Some of the best memories I have from LP occured during the 3 months prior to the race.
One story I never shared here occured in Mirror Lake Wednesday during race week. Me and 3-4 buddies swam 1 loop, and out of no where a huge storm passed through. There were white caps 2 feet high, the the wind was NUTS....it was like the scene from Forest Gump when they talk about "sideways rain." (I tell people about white caps in Mirror Lake; no one believes me!! We were about 1/4 mile out in the first loop, and we just decided to keep swimming.... By the time we made it back to the beach, the storm passed through.... We actually had no clue how windy/stormy it was while swimming; it was hard to tell. One buddy turned back, watched on from the beach and said it was pretty nuts; beach charis/ADK charis were thrown all over the place, our stuff was blown all over the beach.... It was a very memorable experience, and looking back on it was kind of funny. We all laughed (from the safety of a car) how we almost through out months of training.... sorry to ramble....I guess my point is really enjoy the next 3 months; I think you'll remember some moments more vividly then the actual race, which really becomes a blur (except the finish line/chute) coming into that chute is great! HAVE FUN. Edited by cusetri 2011-04-11 12:07 PM |

I did. Sightseeing in NYC on Saturday, and on Sunday rode the bike and run courses of the sprint race I'm doing next weekend. Nice course, some challenging hills especially on the run, but I am going to red line it and see if I can podium. Saw a bunch of people out recreating in Central Park; cyclists (hybrids, beach cruisers, road bikes, mountain bikes, kid bikes), skaters, runners, walkers, roller bladers.... and one guy on a tri bike with race wheels. He wasn't going terribly fast and seemed a bit put of place, but he was out there. |

![]() This was the first awesome weekend for outside training. Let's hope the weekends stay warm and dry going forward so we can all get some quality outside training in. ![]() Cuse is absolutely right. There is definitely a certain 'Magic' about Lake Placid and the surrounding area. One of the highlights of the trip for me was High Falls Gorge. There were these spectacular water falls and about a 1/2 mile of steps around them. They also had awesome hiking trails we took the kids on that were pretty gnarly in places! ![]() |

Is this your first IM? - YES Dream Chaser - The April fools joke was priceless and I had my wife totally fall for that. I told her that I am deferring the race to 2012 because of the new bike course. Got a chance to do 3 hours outdoor bike ride last weekend and looking forward to the warm weather ahead for 5+ hours bike rides. Awesome~!! I too got a few of my tri buddies at the pool with that Bike Course Change April Fools Joke. Heee heee. ![]()
I was excited about the notion of riding down that descent multiple times.
SERIOUSLY???!! Was that your first reaction? LMFAO!! ![]() ![]() ![]()
To be completely honest, I didn't see the post until after you admitted it was a joke, but I would enjoy riding down that thing a few times. I did it once with traffic and can't wait to do it again and not worry about cars. It is closed to motor vehicles, right???? The road is not closed to vehicles. You will have the side of the road and one lane. There is traffic coming up the hill. There is plenty of room to have fun though...so no worries. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just race Collegiate Nats this weekend and I'm ready to get back to thinking about LP. I finished in 2:34 in the scorching Alabama heat and realized several things: While I swim decent in the pool, I need to work harder to translate those time into good OWS times, bike is coming along but it is still a limiter, I need to work on my run consistency more than anything, running is my strength but without durability, it won't get me where I want. My goals for the next few weeks are to run 5x AT LEAST just to get my durability to where I want it. I also plan to bike as much as possible not that the weather is warming up. |

The video is good to see the course and it can get you a bit pumped up, but it gets tiring listening to the talk, the webcam switching back and forth and, ah, looking at coach Troy's backside for three hours. I do think he does a nice job of walking you through the course though. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I Just did my first tri of the season, Ironman Texas 70.3 this past weekend. It was VERY hot by the time I hit the run, but I still PR'ed my Half Ironman distance by ~5 mins. Here are my breakdowns. Total Time: 5:03:26 (~5 min PR for distance) Unfortunately I got a nasty sun burn on my right calf, so I am not sure if it is muscle soreness or burnt skin that hurts the worst! Now its time to get that compact on the bike and to start training for hills. The flats down in Galveston were a ton of fun! |
