Not happy with this month. Had to take a few days off from running at the beginning due to pulling something in my foot, then had to take a couple more days off from everything after crashing on my bike at the start of a long ride.

July's totals:
Bike:14h 39m 42s  - 265.65 Mi
Run:7h 09m 37s  - 45.73 Mi
Swim:4h 44m 47s  - 13674.89 Yd

June's totals:
Bike:21h 47m 02s  - 400.3 Mi
Run:5h 51m 14s  - 40.52 Mi
Swim:5h 44m 01s  - 16950 Yd

This past week has made me much more optimistic though, and I plan on getting back in the pool either Monday or Tuesday now that the road rash is looking good. Definitely looking forward to a full solid month in August.

I'll be driving to PCB and the bike will have the wheels off and stashed in the back of the SUV/truck whatever it is the family and I decide to rent.

ill be interested to see how it all goes via BA. im thinking of doing IMUK someday and your experience will let me know how practical that dream is.

Socks

I am my own boss. In some respects this is very good, but in others its a pain in the bootie. I told the staff that I was not working Fridays and only half days on Wed. I stay lat on M, T, and Th. They still have docs to work for and make their money too.

My wife supported me in that decision. That helps me add a fair bit of time to the weekly totals. And I am generally happier being at the office less and training more. I make less though but who's complaining...

I'm my own boss too but if I work less then I can't pay the rent or my employees.....................very undesirable consequneces.  You are fortunate.

July's totals:

Bike: 23h 06m 26s - 336.99 Mi
Run: 10h 10m - 57.48 Mi
Swim: 4h 35m 32s - 12778 M
Strength: 2h 50m

Happy with where I'm at with my training. Distances are steadily increasing and fortunately not having too many knee/hip issues, which I'm really pleased with!

Think there's 3 of us Brits on here doing IMFL. I've not worked out how I'm getting over yet. Will probably have to fly Delta

July was my highest volume month ever.  I hit my second highest totals in cycling and swimming (second only to April of this year), but ran enough to make up the difference.  I also hit my yearly totals of swimming and cycling from last year.   I also hit the most days I've ever trained in a row, at 17.

July's totals:
Bike:22h 48m 32s  - 398.46 Mi
Run:16h 55m 10s  - 130.12 Mi
Swim:10h 43m 14s  - 28656.17 Yd

2010 totals
Bike:145h 32m 38s  - 2500.43 Mi
Run:82h 32m 27s  - 631.92 Mi

Just a suggestion but check and double check bike fees before booking your flights to US. Delta has the reputation for worst as far as bike fees and damaging bikes if you read over on Slowtwitch. I think often fees are $200-300 each way on Delta.

Glad to see you are able to train w/o those injuries popping up again.

Overall, very happy with how the month ended.  I did have a couple of days of bad running because of the heat, but I'm ok with that.  Everybody has bad workouts at one point or another.

With kid's activities starting back up and volume increasing, the next 3 months will be a challenge, but as long as I know their schedule, I will fit the workouts around it.

July's totals:
Bike:27h 27m 25s  - 446.11 Mi
Run:17h 19m 11s  - 101.96 Mi
Swim:10h 27m 10s  - 25237.23 Yd

KathyG - 2010-08-01 4:00 PM I did my first race yesterday since having my knee scoped in June.

I didn't really want to do it as I thought I would be disappointed with where I'd be fitness wise.  I was surprised how well I did and was faster on the swim, bike and run that I expected by quite a bit.  My new Ordu is so much faster than my Kuota even without my Zipps. For the first time in doing tris for 7 years I got age group hardware...2nd...small race but pleased on many levels.

I am optimistic my fitness loss is less than I feared and/or my recovery is farther ahead of where I thought it was which bodes well for being well trained for IMFL.

I did get to register for IMLP '11 on line on Monday as well which is my plan to do my 5th IM for my 50th birthday to accomplish that I will need to do 2 IMs in '11.

Sooo- is IMLP your 5th, or is there another one?  IMFL 2011 ??

That feeling is back:  The one of being able to go on and on.  The strength and the fitness.  I've turned the corner, and now actually doing an IronMan seems like it will really happen.   It's amazing what training and a recovery week will do.

By the way the Powerbar Ironman drink is available in single serving bottles at Trisports.com.  http://triathlon-gear.trisports.com/search?w=Powerbar+drink&x=17&y=2

They're ~$1.50/ bottle.     I didn't search anywhere else.

i tried it this weekend jashac. it was a bit less sweet than the Gatorade endurance. its more salty flavor, at least the mixed berry and orange. no high fructose corn syrup.

i got a good deal from all3sports.com buy one case and second one is much cheaper. i bought 4 cases.

i felt like i could go forever on the bike, but that heat whooped me after my Sunday long ride on my t-run. We made it 20 mins and I was glad to quit in 93 degrees, humid, and no shade Georgia.

Anyone have a discount code for all3sports?

I've been using Powerbar Endurance in Lemonlime and like it. I agree it tastes more salty that\n Gatorade products. I wonder how they will do the various flavors. As RI70.3 the athlete guide told what flavors would be at what aid station. I should ask someone who did IMLP how it worked on the bike there?

Kathy - i don't think you need a code for the buy one get on cheap deal on all3sports.  I found that too, but got to the check out and they were going to charge $150 for shipping to canada.

Someone IM'd me with a distributer that was cheap on shipping so I ordered some of the powdered lemon  lime stuff.  Hopefully it will be enough to tell if I can handle it.

Was on vacation and building back up from my Half IM at the end of July when I through out my back.  First two weeks were pretty pittiful, but I've been better the last 2.5 weeks or so.

July's totals:
Bike:16h 24m  - 408.1 KM
Run:10h 26m 45s  - 90 KM
Swim:6h 36m 40s  - 17002.5 M
Kayaking:2h 00m

For those who have done IMFLa before, how does the special needs bag on the bike work?

Is it located at an aid station?  I have my nutrition down so that I can drink all of my calories, but I only have the capability of carrying four 20oz bottles.  I would need to put 2 more bottles in my SNB, and fill them with water provided from an aid station.  Obviously, I have to stop my bike to get the bottles out and add water, I'm just hoping I only have to stop once.

BA are generally good when it comes to bike handling, I've used them before for this. Their charging policy is (relatively) straightforward and much better than many other transatlantic airlines. My other choices were Virgin, or to consider Delta into Atlanta, but having flown Delta once before I have very little desire to do so again.
IMUK is actually held in the town where I was born and grew up, however a quick look at the bike and run profiles will tell you why I decided on IMFL for my first one!

Why do you need 4 (or 6) bottles of anything on your bike at any given time?  1 bottle of nutrition (concentrated enough to get you through 56 miles) and 1 bottle of water is all you really need.  Take a sip of the concentrate, wash down with some water, grab more water at the bottle swaps every 10 miles when you run out and grab the second bottle of concentrated nutrition at the special needs halfway through.  People make bike hydration/nutrition far too difficult.  Keep it simple.

SN bags are about mile 50 on the bike.  They are on the side of the road. As you come up you can yell up your number and they will retrieve your bag for you.

Keeping it simple is drinking the liquid with right concentration of carbs and calories that your stomach can absorb. Concentrating your drink complicates it. If it is hotter than normal or cooler than normal the water chaser folks do can be to much or to little. If you take in to little or to much is easy to do as doses are very small.

For IM Canada I had bottles with 7 servings of nutrition each marked and I take nutrition every 20 minutes..so each bottle would last for 2 hours 20'. I brought three with me and had one is special needs.

So far I'm not a huge fan of the Powerbar Perform drinks. They seem to have the same effects on my stomach that normal Gatorade does. I'm going to continue to experiment with the Powerbar drink mix during my long runs. This will not be my first choice of drinks at the race unless I start tolerating it better.

Better late than never:

July's totals:
Bike:16h 55m 35s  - 207.77 Mi
Run:3h 19m 19s  - 15.81 Mi
Swim:8h 38m 17s  - 23307.66 Yd
Aqua Jogging:1h 25m 22s
Elliptical Training:1h 00m
Walking:2h 00m

Is it inappropriate to whine at least some about not being able to fully bike train and run?  I'm getting in most of my bike miles on the trainer (after taking a month off) because it's less strain on my back, and I've had small running successes, but being so far off from what I was able to do before I hurt my back is very disappointing.  I want to train so badly, but if I do too much, it just sets me back.  Injuries are so frustrating!

What would BT do?

I've got an Oly on Sunday that I really like and want to do well at.

However my A race is IMFL and the training that encompases.  The plan calls for a 3 hr ride on Saturday + 30 min run.
And a long run on Sunday.

There is also a 200K Brevet on Saturday that I'd do for sure if I didn't have a race on Sunday.

so... Would you do the Brevet before the race?  or Would you do the 3 hr ride then race on Sunday?  Or Would you blow off the Saturday ride in favor of having fresh legs for the Oly on Sunday?

I am planning to finish the long run after the Oly.

Jashac

can you race easier or do you have to go all out? if you take some pressure off yourself and go enjoy it you can probably do more this weekend.

fwiw i can NOT race easier, but I am thinking about it for an oly in a week and a half so I don't lose the 65$ and get to train my plan as usual.

Skip the saturday ride and go do the race and have FUN.  I have no idea what a Brevet is.  Missing one long ride is not going to impact your IMFL I don't think.

120 mile ride the day before an Oly you want to do well? I'd skip the Brevet

Plan is just that a generic plan that needs to be tweaked for you.

I'd try to fit the ride in another day or decide what is more important? You have ridden a lot last month will skipping one 3 hour ride make a big difference?

What about doing the oly in the am and then do 2 more hours zone 2 ride later in the day?  I think that is what I'd do...

If I remember correctly, you are also following the Be Iron Fit competitive plan.  The plan has an Oly race NEXT weekend, so maybe you could just switch the workouts from this weekend and next.  Do the Oly this weekend and then next weekend do the weekend that was scheduled for this weekend.  Just a thought.
