Cheer up, you get to focus 100% on what you do best (stalking.) I think you are doing the right thing. Don't tackle it until you feel you are prepared.

Also, you get a really cool backpack that you bloody well paid for!

Yes I got the backpack very excited about that.  Didn't shop as I ran outta time.    It's gonna be an exciting day indeed.

now do I need to go down to the bike check in on Saturday seeing as I'm not checking in a bike...

Hell no, especially since it's in Frangy.

or as we like to affectionately call it Franganistan.

OK, I have homework for all of the Manatees (other than texting me lewd photos)

Warm up! Warm up for your workouts and establish a routine. Then use this same routine for your races. It doesn't have to be long or complicated.  You just need to figure out what works for you but it's extremely important. This is probably the biggest lesson I have learned this year.

Well, right now, I am walking for 5min/0.5km before I start running.  Biking I just spin easy for a few minutes while I get my workout up on TR and my watch going.  Swimming I follow what the coach puts on the board, but generally about 600m combo of swim, pull, kick.  I need a looooooooong warmup before I feel comfy in the pool (ie breathing under control).

Ummmm I hate to admit this (please don't kill me)... I am horrible at warming up.  My routine for swimming is - jump in and swim at a moderate pace.  I guess that counts.

For cycling - I just jump on the bike and go...

For running - I have a routine of stretching.  Always stretch my calves, quads, hamstrings and usually loosen up the ankles.  I don't pre run - or run slow - or walk to warm up.  I just take off, and usually manage to maintain my pace throughout the run.

How would a warm up (and what would you recommend) help my running?

I believe this is one of the main contributing factors to me getting hurt and being off for 8 weeks. Now I warmup before everything and I stretch and foam roll after everything. I don't ever wanna go down that road again

Janyne, I am holding out hope for the weather in Bradenton this weekend. I believe that by the latest forecast you should be off the bike before the wind picks up. I wish I could be there, as I originally planned, but I have to give a talk at church.  And Saturday we are visiting the FIL in Jupiter, on the other coast. If you are in the area on Friday night and want to meet up, PM me. I would be honored.

Warm up! Warm up for your workouts and establish a routine. Then use this same routine for your races. It doesn't have to be long or complicated.  You just need to figure out what works for you but it's extremely important. This is probably the biggest lesson I have learned this year.

Maybe we could share what we do. I'll begin.
I run really slowly for about 10 minutes when I am going to run. Bike slowly for 10 minutes when I am going to cycle. And do drills for 10 minutes when I am going to swim. That's it. So far, so good.
Great idea. For 5k-HM I will jog for 20 minutes or so and then do about 5 strides or so (quick relaxed running, getting up to speed then floating for about 100 meters) Marathon is about the same but the jog is more like 10 minutes. For a hard workout I've found about 2 miles jogging is good, then the rest is dependent upon the workout that follows. For example, If its a track workout we generally do strides then a fast lap. I find it important to have a small portion towards the end of your warmup to be what you perceive to be "fast."
All my runs begin with my standard 1 mile "pre-run Gunnar run"; which means I run with my dog before heading off on my planned run/ race. As this run involves lots of stops to sniff, pee and poop ( him, not me; really), I consider it a warmup. I also need the first mile of my run to to loosen up. I don't do any strides - mainly because I really don't know what they are, even after Salty's explanation , I'm really sure I've never floated during a run in my life . If I'm running a marathon I usually jog a bit before the gun and try to do stretches that make me look like I know what I'm doing. I then still need a warm up mile.Biking usually involves a couple of warm up miles before I try to pick up the pace. It's really not done intentionally, it's just how my body works. For swimming I just do what the coach tells me to do. That usually involves between 500-800 of warming up before getting to the main set. Of course, I'm a slow swimmer, so there isn't a discernible difference between my warm up swim and main set swim other than feeling looser.

Awesome job, Jonathan!  Personally, I think the mental knowledge that yes, I know I can [swim or ibke or run] __ miles because I've already done it in training is huge.  Hoping you have a safe, fun, injury-free race this weekend!

Happy Friday Manatees!!!!!!!!!!

Lots to share today!

1) My swim this morning ROCKED! I thought it would be another tough one because I just wasn't feeling it but I must have taken on my Manatee-ness when I hit the water because I did a set that I did two weeks ago and I beat my total time by over 2 minutes for a 3000 yard set!!!! The details are in my log. WooHoo!!!!!!!! Thank you Yanti & Skrat!!!!! Laughing

2) Today is Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday so I am listening to his brilliance today at work. It's a Phantom, Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat kinda day. (I like Jesus Christ Superstar too but don't have it on my iPod)Tongue out

3) Saw a picture on FB that reminded me of Jo so I am sharing.Laughing

4) I made the Ding Dongs/Twinkies for my MIL's birthday so I am sharing a picture of those.Cool

5) My Lobo's totally messed up my bracket Yell

On the NEW BIKE front: I found out that a local, highly recommended store also does trade ins! Their program is cool: they take your bikes, sell them on Craigslist or eBay, and give you the total sale price minus eBay and PayPal fees towards a new bike.  They have a great lineup of bikes (Blue, Cannondale, Felt, Bianchi), plus I know they have great service.

I'm heading over there this afternoon to check it out!

So, out of curiosity what are you all looking for in a bike that your current bike doesn't give you?
