Subject: RE: SWBKRUN- Miles and Miles ahead!!!! CLOSED
It sounds like many are in the same boat with the holidays which makes me feel better.  I have been struggling with workouts, and even though I am home today, its hard to get  back in the routine.  I have been working off a plan from here, but I am starting to build out my schedule for next year which at the current time looks like 6-7 Sprints and a 1/3 Iron distance race.  I have picked my "A" races and started working backwards to get my schedule laid out.  I know I need to focus some more effort on planning workouts.

This week will put me right at 4 months until my first tri of the season, with some pretty aggressive goals for myself.

Christmas was good to me many things related to tris:
Yak Trax and plenty of snow to use them in when i returned home
A really nice Brooks windbreaker shell that I will be using for some out door running
I consider my Garmin 310xt as part of my xmas because I got permission to upgrade, although it only ended up costing me a little bit out of pocket.
I got a new LG Tri Suit
I also got the three pack of Flexible Warrior Yoga DVDs that I am really excited to start building my core up.  I played some Wii Fit this weekend with my family and then we went out and purchased it, and it was quite entertaining, not quite the strenuous workouts I am used to but it was something, and quite fun as well.
I am also going to be ordering my powertap wheel this week hopefully if all goes well.  I have to keep on biking until it comes in, but cannot wait.  Depending on how things work out I may end up with the SL+ but if that does not pan out, it will be the PRO+ system.

I got a new pair of downhill skis so I hopefully do not break my cracked set on our trip to CO in Feb.  Time to hop on the trainer and get a good hour of biking in tonight while watching MNF.

Hi everyone:

Man it is really hard for me to keep up with this thread.  You know what would be kewl? If we had our own board with collapsible threads.  That would be so much easier.  Then there would be a collapsible thread for like Sam's birthday wishes, or fattyfatfat's shoe/dress choices, or even my lame redundant advice request regarding HRMs....  Would be sooo much easier. :-D

Anyway, Suzy/SSminnow - thanks for clarifying I feel like an idiot.  Jeepguy and Happychick - thanks so much for taking the time to provide input.  I really do feel like an idiot now for not buying the $137 garmin 305 on amazon.  sheesh.

Anyway, see ya!

Hi all - I feel like my life has been on fast-farward these past few days.  We had a fantastic Christmas.  The kids are still sorting through all of their new toys.  They are heading to Nana's house tomorrow for a few days so hopefully I can get the house back in order.  :-)

I got some wonderful bike stuff to keep me warm for training and getting to work on days that I commute by bike.

Tomorrow I have my first swim lesson - hopefully to fix my dreadful stroke.  Also a bike VO2 test w/ my tri coach.  So busy, busy, busy!!!

And finally less than 9 miles to hit 1000m running for the year.  Who would have ever thought that I would run that far in my life let alone a year.  3 days to do it.  I may have to sneak in a few extras workouts into my plan.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!  Off now to wipe down my bike so Tony can put the new bike computer on it while I watch Julie and Julia.  :-)

tri-chic: Great work on the pool membership!! I need to find some motivation to start working on my swim again soon. Good luck with it.

losta: I will be your 2010 clean eating buddy! I did more than fall off the wagon this month, I jumped in front of the wagon and let it run me over. I really need to start logging and being accountable again too.

dbw27: I just saw the 305 online for $140 somewhere... I will try to track it down again. Don't beat yourself up too much. You will find it at that price again somewhere else, guaranteed.

On another note - I feel like a bit of a loser because I can't keep track of everyone's names and need to refer to people by their screen name. Can we have another role call to remind me, or just include your name in your next post? I will try harder to catch them this time, but there are just so many of us...

Wow, wow, wow!

Tons of good stuff going on here!

Danette, love the 305, have had mine since Dec. 2007 and it's still going strong with no signs of giving up.  I also love the velcro strap as it fits on my tiny wrist and I don't even think about it anymore.

Happychick, mentor Steve has it right...just get out there for a few short runs and you will be craving the longer stuff in no time!

John, you crack me up!  I have totally done that and it was like some sort of bad slow motion video...and the no, no, no that is going through your mind at the time is priceless... along with using your every bit of core strength to avoid any scratches to your frame!  Glad you are okay.

So, today, I missed my 2:20 bike workout due to several unforeseen incidents the last of which included a 3 hour emergency trip with my mother in law to our acupunturist for her "cricked neck".  Ah, sometimes family responsibilities take precedent.  BUT, that means a super early morning wake up call for me.  Joy!!!  anyone need a 4:30 Pacific Time wake up call?

Quick CT question for all of you with CT's...  So, I finally got a laptop that is running Windows 7, downloaded all of the software to it, set up "new rider" me!  and it is saying "no communication" at the bottom of the "Samual Adams" screen where they show the start line and two cyclists.  Power is on.  PC ext data cord is plugged into the little readout thing that goes on the handlebars (well in my case, rests on the towel on the handlebars) and the other end is plugged into the USB port on the laptop.  Now, the model is 2006, so it has the older style cable that has an adapter.  Now, it worked fine at the sellers place.  I am wondering if there is something I am forgetting to do?  Any suggestions?

Ok, I bit the bullet this afternoon.  Paid for my swim membership at the Univ for 6 months (the same amount of time I've been OUT of the pool).  Hopefully I remember what to do.

Come on jump in...the waters nice. welcome back.
Soon you'll be swimming like this....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJpFVvho0o4

Just as an FYI normally Best Buy coupons work on GPS and the garmin 305 is considered in the GPS category.  You can normally find a 10-12% off coupon, although I don't think there are any out right now, but they either 1 often have them out or 2 put it on sale a decent amount as well.

I loved my 305 and my 310 is even better.

Hour bike tonight, I could tell I have not biked in a week, but felt good to get back in the routine.  Back to work for a 3 day week and then a long weekend again!

Here is what always works for me:

Go to the options menu and do the check com ports function.  You need to make sure the piece that is pluggied into your USB port has dancing lights when you start the course.

If that fails, totally shut down the software, make sure both ends of the unit are plugged in correctly and restart it.  Again look for those dancing lights.

Call me if you need me.  I am obviously up and it  isn't 4:30am in CA yet.

Tech Support.

Q: If someone has never done a tri and fears the run, what approach might you suggest to get them through the 5K?

I was at a party last night and a 43 year old guy I know came up to me to talk tris.  He knows I do them and I was pretty sure he wanted to try one based on some conversations last summer. He used to be an athlete, got married, totally stopped doing anything, but working and drinking. His wife is a total non athlete. I suggested we do a sprint together this July. His biggest fear is the run (which alwasy baffles me), he swam in highschool (claims he can OWS) and has a bike.  He asked me to be his "Jillian" to get him ready. As the night went on he was more excited, but also had a few more cocktails!

Any thoughts on how to approach a running program for a total non runner?  Pretty sure he is going through a mid-lilfe crisis .

Have him find a 3 mile course and start walking it 3 times a week. Make sure he marks the time. Then have hium run the down hill portions only (still tracking his time). Slowly work up to running the whole 3 miles, Speed does not matter.

He will see the time dropping and be encouraged. Once he can run the whole thing, regardless of the time, he can work on going faster, starting again with the down hill sections. The time tracking should keep him going. Make sure he understands that speed is not important in the beginning.  Good luck. I hope he still wants to do it when the alcohol wears off.

Which USB adapter did you get?  There seems to be only one that works with Vista/Windows 7.

You might have the same USB adapter that I have which won't work with Vista/Windows 7

They sell these now.  FTDI - USB-to-Stereo Adapter which goes straight from the stereo cable to USB, so no real adapter needed.  42 bucks.  (I need one also)

jvanis - 2009-12-28 6:27 PM It sounds like many are in the same boat with the holidays which makes me feel better.

What do you think of your Yak Trax?? I've been tempted to pick up a pair but haven't yet.
And MNF?? Vikings suck. Wait no- Favre sucks

I have not gotten out in the Yaks yet, hopefully sometime this week, there is a motivational issue when it is single digits outside!  I live in Minneapolis but grew up a Bears fan, so it was an interesting game to watch.  My passion lies in college football especially the Big 10.

So I got up the nerve to weight myself yesterday and I was up to 182. Well sot of got up the nerve. I had to weight my newe flat screen TV to see it the wall mount support would hold it and the only way was to weigh myself and then again holding the TV. That is motivation. I am up 10 lbs from my race season weight. It certainly got me working on the abs last night.

Cross my fingers for saying this but I have been feeling great the past few days. No headaches or anything. I had a really bad stomach ache on boxing day (no not a hangover. I was very careful about that).. Since then I have felt like a new man.

Going to register for some tri's this week aand build my plan for the year.

SSMinnow - 2009-12-29 7:13 AM Q: If someone has never done a tri and fears the run, what approach might you suggest to get them through the 5K?

Suzy

You might start out by having him read some of Jeff Galloway's stuff about the Run/Walk approach.  Several of our Tri team members have used this and it is what I have used after getting back into running after a 15 year break with back problems.  I also know several BT'ers who are using it now to get over the "I hate running" issues.

Starting with maybe a 50/50....2 min. run/2 min. walk and working up to a 4/1 or 5/1 then progressing on to run a mile/walk a minute...something like that.  I used a 4/1 approach to get through the Disney Marathon and it worked wonderfully.
