I barely survived my OLY and finished in a brisk 4:55.18. Yeah, I know. It was brutal. Will explain later. Congratulations!!! Finishing is always a good thing and worth celebrating. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod I ran this morning. I was shooting for at least 2 miles, but it was hot and I had the stroller, so I only made it 1.75. Hills are really tough with that thing!! I wanted to make stuffed peppers for dinner, but the peppers had fruit flies. We're having quinoa and grilled sausage instead. Same ingredients (minus rotten peppers), but a totally different form factor. Also, I had tart blood orange frozen yogurt as a snack this afternoon. It was amazing!! |

Early congrats to our other racing manatees, too! Can't wait to hear from them in person. In person? Well, firsthand, I guess is what I mean, LOL! |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod Congrats Reece, TJ and Claire! Didn't get a chance to read the RR yet TJ, but sounds like it was a pretty gnarly race; way to go on getting 'er done! Can't wait to read all the RRs. I didn't do much this weekend. Swim on Friday, 6km run today. I have a friend who is a Chiropractor who happened to be at the Agility Trial this weekend, so asked her to look at my back--I was pretty sure my SI was out (it was) but so was my middle back and my neck, so I am wondering if that has been part of my feeling off recently. My swim on Friday was again iffy, so I am hoping that after the adjustment yesterday, my swim tomorrow will feel more normal. |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod KansasMom - 2012-06-10 3:27 PM I think this is it: I think Reece's team was first in relay. Swim: 28:30 Bike: 2:28:03 (Reece's leg) Run: 1:32:40 For a finishing time of 4:31:14 -- first in all legs and first over all in relay. (I hope I've got the right team.) Still waiting for Clare's numbers to update. I'm pretty sure she's within minutes of finishing. I wish this was the case. A friend of mine could see anything with regards to tracking. Actually I know the swimmer that was part of that winning relay (Sandy Cohen) he's one of the fastest 50+ year old swimmers I know. The winning relay team crushed all other relay teams, it wasn't even close. I just looked at the results page and when you enter in our bib# (1586) nothing shows up. My friend Russell got a printout on site but he said they had to do someting with the computer to get the total results. Our total time was something like 5:31, swim was around 31 minutes, bike was just under 3 hours and run was around 1:56. It was a tough day for me, more to follow in the RR. But it was a safe ride, most importantly |

Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod I'm still struggling mentally/emotionally with my performance Saturday. I read this RR from a man who did the Xterra sport. I thought I'd share some excerpts from his report. I had to do two laps of the run he describes. Now, I know it sounds hyperbolic, but honestly the 5k run seemed to be continuous uphill, in sand. It can’t be possible, because the run starts and ends in the same place. Logically there has to be some downhill. Trust me, it doesn’t feel like it. At one point I thought to myself “the only reason we biked another trail is because this would be too technical for mountain biking!”. At times, it was very frustrating. Just like on the ride, all I wanted to do was stretch out and break into my stride. Instead, if I wasn’t slogging sand I was jumping up rocks or turning sharp turns. But isn’t that the point of mountain biking and trail running? The trail was beautiful, at times passing along a wooded creek and at other times running along cactus flora. The last bit of the trail was, admittedly, just a long slog along the gravel bank of Ken’s Lake, with a heavy wind, but even then the views of the ramparts surrounding the Moab Valley made up for it. My only complaint is that the water stations were few and infrequent. For the ride, I was smart enough to wear my Camelback. Second, realize that you are taking all that lactic acid from the ride into the run. Nothing new, right – that’s what triathlon is about. But it’s an entirely new level here! I just kept telling myself “lean forward and keep your arms moving”. There were a lot of sandy hills where I was keeping up around 80 steps a minute, but total travel for each step might have been 3”. SeriouslyIt’s hot, it’s sandy, it’s difficult and it is long. And then all of that is followed up by a hot, windy run along the reservoir. By that point, I had stopped sweating and I knew I was in trouble |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod TJ - We've all had those races that just didn't go how we thought, and it's so hard not to be disappointed. My first marathon was a royal disaster with a lot of moments where I wanted to cry and quit, but looking back now I can't believe I kept going. I could have fallen on the ground and let a medic pick me up, but that wasn't acceptable to me. it sounds like you just need some time to put this race into perspective. It was a really tough day with tough weather and some curveballs you just can't train for - that doesn't make you weak or a failure or any other negative adjective/emotion/noun. You've just got to take that experience with you into your next race and this time you'll know you can finish, because remember how bad Moab sucked and you STILL finished! By that point, I had stopped sweating and I knew I was in trouble I've been there, during a race in the desert, and similarly the run was all sand/trail (except for the very end, 200m along a beach ... sand but no trail). It's a bad, bad place to be! Fallout from extreme physical experiences affects our emotions, too. It's not like we're separate physical/emotional/etc. beings and you can slice a knife between the components ... it's all one big ball of sticky lovable wax that is us! I'm hoping with this hindsight and others that you can ease into congratulating yourself on your performance ... makes it all the more amazing that you stuck with it and saw this race through to the end. |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod I had an awesome weekend! Had an amazing dinner at a new restaurant with my DH Friday night, riding lesson Saturday morning (worked on no stirrup work on a super comfy and slow mare), then the garden tour with my stepmom - we saw some AMAZING gardens, land that could have been 10 people's back yards. And the weather was just perfect, sunny and 78, no humidity. We had some wine and cheese and crackers back at her house on the patio then pizza, then I went home to watch 2 episodes of Mad Men and repair my wetsuit (oops, I ripped it 3x the first day I put it on). Sunday I got up at 7am for a really nice, quiet, back roads 25 mile bike ride (longest distance yet!) with a group of women I met through my tri coached workouts, then a couple of us went for a short swim in a nearby lake. I was really proud of myself, I swam back in to shore and barely stopped, letting myself use set amounts of recovery strokes in between freestyle. I need to keep doing that, eventually I'll be able to go the 1500m for my OLY! After that I was all energized, so I weeded my front garden, then went shopping for groceries, flowers and mulch, a new summer bed quilt, and some storage furniture for the house. Came back home and planted the new flowers and mulched, ended my day at 8:00pm with firecracker chicken wings and extra spciy cajun fries Such a great weekend!! |

X2, as no one can say it like Yanti. Also, not to sound too hokey here but allow yourself to validate these feelings you have, whatever they may be. Then, once you let it rest for a bit, revisit the race in your head and pull out some learnings. It's all part of the journey, and part of a bigger picture. |
