Extreme Veteran 668 NW Georgia | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed mbehr1983 - 2013-03-04 11:08 PM I was on a busy road and traffic was going slow. I was came to a point where cars can turn. I didnt realize that there was a car turning. Luckily she had already made the turn(technically I hit her) and I hit her rear panel. I flipped over and landed pretty hard on my lower back. The bike survived with a bent seatt and the handlebars need to be straightend. The driver did stop and seemed more shaken up than me. I witness called 911 so the cops came and filed a report. I am guessing the driver had a warrant or something because she left in handcuffs(maybe this was the reason she was histerical) I am in need of a new saddle. Any suggestions on one that is affordable? I just had the standard one on the Giant defy. The doc said just soft tissue issue. She said take 48-72 hours off. Since I statred the plan, it seems I can only get the first week done. I guess i will just push back and start where I was suppose to be. We will see how I feel tomorrow My wife is very understanding. She gave birth on Fri and I took Fri and Sat. She is a keeper. She is really good I dont have a trainer. I prefer to get out on the road. It will be something to consider in the future.
Glad it was nothing worse, Mike. Rest up a couple of days and enjoy the time with your family. Tonight in lockup: "Yeah, I'm here cuz of a bicycle. See, what had happened was, I'm turning into the Tasty Freeze for some dinner. When out of nowhere this dude runs into my a55 with his bike. Then the cops show and I got paper on me. I was like #*(&$#*!!!" |

Bahaha - too funny! Mike, don't rush it, make sure you are healed before you get back at it hard. I can back up both Dino's and Andy's advice. I was hit by a bike going 20+ mph while running several years ago. I was banged up, but not horrible. I started back running within a few days which was a huge error. I ended up injured and was out of pocket for a very long time. Give your body time to adjust and heal. It'll serve you well in the long run. |

Pro 4100 Wherever the trail takes me, WA. | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed mbehr1983 - 2013-03-05 9:01 PM I haven't heard bad things about bikes direct however I highly recommend riding both bikes before buying. These two bikes are so so different from each other that you can't even compare. That being said (talking out of both sides like I always do) I would lean towards the Scott. A couple reasons 1st- very reputable company and have a great name for themselves. 2nd you can always throw aero bars on it. If a few years you WILL get a new bike get a tri specific bike then. If you truly having the bug, then use the Scott as your rain bike or group ride bike.Hey all, Since my bike has a cracked fork, I am in the market for a new bike. I was wondering if anyone has bought from bikesdirect? I found what looks like a steal on a tri-bike. I would like to know what you all think and this is about the range I want to stay in If not then maybe this from Scott |

I was wondering if anyone has bought from bikesdirect? I found what looks like a steal on a tri-bike. I would like to know what you all think and this is about the range I want to stay in If not then maybe this from Scott I gotta chime here and direct you to a local bike store first. Buying bikes on-line might look like a good idea because they cost less, but unless you truly understand your fit measurements (Stack & Reach) and truly understand how that relates to the geometry of the proper size of the bike you are looking at, if there is one, you are just looking for trouble. Most local bike stores will match internet pricing these days and will get you on the "right" bike for you. Talk to them, tell them how you ride, how often you ride, etc. With all the injury talk going on around here you don't want knee, hip, shoulder, or back issues because of bike fit that cannot be corrected because you are on the wrong geometry or the wrong size. (for example: I have 4 bikes and all but 2 are different sizes because of geometry differences!) This might all sound like calculus, but trust me and ask around about a good LBS in the forum for your State here on BT if you don't already know of one. Then go talk to them ....... I believe you will be very happy that you did. Edited by badgerintx 2013-03-06 7:25 AM |

In Mike's honor....What close calls or incidents have you had on the bike? What do you do to ride safe? I'll go.... I'm on a flight to Florida tomorrow to visit my dad, and participate in the first of my 50K series races for the year. The race starts at 7am on Saturday. It's in Dade City, and it's called Dances With Dirt--Green Swamp. The plan is to enjoy the warm weather, sunshine, the other runners, and a nice easy walk/jog to the finish. It's going to be fun for my dad to see that I'm not entirely crazy, or at least there are other like-minded crazy people out there From the race website: "The Dirt Crew is back here at Dirt Quarters workin’ to make yer dirty dreams come true. The soul freein' magic of runnin’ through nature with reckless abandon makes DWD day more than special, heck, it’s almost spiritual. Life is short and we ain't got enough of such days. Our dream is to have four such life liftin’ opportunities a year, like the changin’ of the seasons. A quarterly chance to check reality at the door and tear into the terrain with all senses screamin', not dreamin'! Four opportunities to avoid midlife crisis, regular visits to the shrink and suicidal tendencies, kinda like a good spankin’. I hear tell the Post Office is gonna make runnin’ DWD mandatory."

No racing. Good luck, Jayne! Mike, take it easy and get better soon. Close calls. I almost got hit by a deer on my bike one time. It ran across the road right in front of me and scared the heck out of me. I've been charged by loose dogs several times on both the bike and the run, though I only felt seriously threatened twice. I called animal control on both of those occasions and in one case I found out that the dog had bitten another runner a few minutes later. I also almost stepped on a rat one time when I was running, which probably wouldn't have hurt me but would have grossed me out. And it would have sucked for the rat. To stay safe on the bike or the run, I never assume a driver will see me, I always assume a driver will turn left or right without checking for someone in the intersection or crosswalk, and I stick to routes that I know do not have loose dogs. |

In Mike's honor....What close calls or incidents have you had on the bike? What do you do to ride safe? Racing!!! Running a local half marathon with Steve and Ryan. Well, we are all running the same race. Ryan will finish and have time to relax before Steve rolls in, and then Steve and Ryan can go and get brunch before I roll in. Ha!! Still, will be fun. I ran this race last year and botched pacing, going out way too fast. Want to be smart this year, plus I've been doing more speed/tempo training than I ever have, so I'm curious to see where that lands me. A PR would be groovy!! Post-race, I get to hit a gymnastics meet (son), get a haircut (me), hit a soccer game (daughter), and get all dolled up for an auction at 5:30pm (hubs and me). Think compression socks would go with my pretty black-and-white dress????????????? No real close calls on the bike, I'm thankful to say. I ride like Julia -- I assume that every car is going to turn and doesn't see me, that every car is being driven by a texting teenager or a drunk, and I utter a word of thanks every time I return home safely. I try to wear bright clothing every time I'm out as well. I've spilled four times: Twice due to not un-clipping (once taking a turn too slowly, once stopping too much to allow a car to go around a garbage truck), and twice on moss (once in my driveway, once on a running trail). Itty bitty spills, but damn, the ground is hard and they always hurt. Good luck racers!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Mike, I am so sorry, it sucks being hit and your bike is busted. But, so good that you are ok. Stay safe for your family. I was run off the road here in rural Maryland 2 summers ago. Now I ride only on the trainer or with my husband or tri friend outdoors. It scared the begevees out of me and I don't want that to happen again. |

Tell us all about it. In Mike's honor....What close calls or incidents have you had on the bike? What do you do to ride safe? No racing for me! Like Linda, I am heading into taper for my 3/24 marathon. I've had a few close calls. Like I said yesterday, I was hit by a bike while running on a paved trail. That sucked. I've also had to slam on my brakes and fallen on my rear end to avoid being hit by an F150 that blew a stop sign on the IM course in Mt. Horeb. I've had pick up drivers throw trash at me and pull up along side of me and give me crap. It's the way it is sometimes. Now, I am like Julia. I assume some butthead is out to get me and I am uber careful at every intersection or when riding on the shoulder. I also never ride into the sun in the morning or at dusk when it is difficult for drivers to see due to glare. I also wear an LED flashing light on my bike, even in the daylight. |

In Mike's honor....What close calls or incidents have you had on the bike? What do you do to ride safe? No racing here, I was thinking about doing a 3.8km ocean swim that's being held not far from here on Sunday but I haven't bought a wetsuit yet - yes Suzy I will get one ASAP and practice in it! Also I think at this stage doing my long bike is more important. Tonight I had my best exercise session ever, I ran a relaxed 30min run to the pool then straight in for a 3km swim. Once I started my main set I felt so comfortable I was reluctant to take the rest intervals in the pyramid because I just felt so efficient and smooth. That's a first for me! As far as near misses on the bike, I think there's almost always some close shave, that's why I'm really enjoying riding indoors using TR during the week. I was severely harassed by a bus last year right in the middle of Noosa one Saturday afternoon. He tried to get past me on a small roundabout and I looked around to see him almost touching my rear wheel, he then pushed me into the kerb and blocked me from getting past him at a raised pedestrian crossing. I overtook him and pulled up by his open window and told him I was reporting him to council and a couple of minutes later he shot past me so close my elbow was hit by the side of the bus! Needless to say my complaint didn't even get a reply. However I'm thinking something might have got through because recently the buses are being incredibly couteous and I think they may have been spoken to - Noosa is very keen on encouraging tourism from triathletes and other high spending athletes. |

After a couple of minutes the guy finished and grabbed his towel - an ironman finisher towel - and I suddenly realized it was Pete Jacobs, he's relocated to Noosa! As I said hi to him and got on the TM I realized the women was Michelle Bremer who won Ironman Western Australia this year. Running next to her was interesting, I think she was impressed with my uphill walking intervals.... |

Champion 5522 Frisco, TX | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed No racing for me either... good luck to all of our competitors this weekend - Birdie, Ryan, and Kyla on your half and Jayne on your ultra! Funny story, I got out of the pool after yesterday's swim workout and headed towards the hot tub for like a 5 minute soak. I get in and then look over and BAM - John's apparent twin was sitting there in the tub. It was kinda freaky how much he looked like fattyfatfat. I'm glad the dude had his eyes closed, cuz it would have been awkward if he knew that I was staring at him... Close calls - not really many that were not my fault at the end of the day. I couple of times when unfamiliar with the streets, I pulled out in front of someone only to realize later that their stop sign was still ahead or that they didn't have one.... I do hate the pickemup trucks that like to blow their tail pipes as they go by at 50.... |

I might try and get a ride in tomorrow since the pain came from riding.I guess better to take a couple extra days than be sidelined for months |
