perfect.

Ok, this is starting to bother me, all of Judi's post have Salty's avatar! It's really disconcerting as they have different post personalities, so I'm a bit of kilter thinking I'm readings a Salty post, but reading a Judi tenored post.

Salty, stop trying to gas light me!

Looks fine to me... odd

StaceyK - 2013-05-13 6:41 PM All your talk of beautiful weather is making me feel even colder (I want summer back already)!!! Our night time temps are down in the 40s now, which is cold for us (we don't get snow) And it is still dark at 6:30am and the sun is going down at 5:30pm. 3 weeks ago we were still getting 100* days so I am not coping well. I have lost all of my motivation and just want to go back to bed after DH leaves for work at 5:45.

DH wont let me train outside in the dark because there are no street lights and sidewalks and very limited road shoulders where we live. i can train inside on the trainer and the treadmill but this is not exciting me and even then I am still cold after 30minutes.

Can any of you give me some good suggestions for winter gear? I have my first race in a week and a half and it will most likely be around 50* at the start, this is definitely not shorts and t-shirt weather for me. More like 2 layers of pants, 3 tops and my ugg boots (you might need to google that one) but I can't run in that

Stacey, this is from the trail run I did in December. It was 33* out:

Album

I was a bit on the chilly side at the start, but once we got going, I was good.  Cheap gloves and ear warmers, because the hands and ears are the 2 places I feel it most. Sometimes I'll do a wool cap, but it has to be real cold for that. I went with a long sleeve tech shirt over a short sleeve tech shirt. Short tights. I have to agree with Ben, you really need to look at the distance and your own body. I have often been too warm and rarely been too cold throughout a race, which to me means I generally overdress. So, I've been working on it and it was A-OK at this race. Keep playing with it until you find what works for you. Good Luck!!!!

I did a race last November in Colorado that was probably in the low 40's when we started. I wore capris and a short sleeve shirt and gloves. Once I warmed up I took of the gloves and was pleasantly cool the whole HM.

Awesome!  Perfect name.  Fiona is totally hawt and so is your bike.

Like Trek and Terrenzo, Felt and Fiona go together ... Felt makes great bikes. Great. Pink/purple and black go with EVERYTHING. I am an 80s child, and it is so.

I like the purple highlights. Not over the top but feminine. I'm waiting for the matching helmet, they had to order it in because I have a small noggenEmbarassed. They also have a pair of matching gloves that I'm contemplating...

Mother's Day swim video

I'm not seeing much improvement here. A little frustrated.

Okay. Maybe there is some improvement.

Swim video from a year ago.

Skrat and Yanti would be better off commenting on this, and I don't really know anything.....but....the things that stood out for me when I watched are......1. Over rotation of the head when breathing. I try to look to the side of the pool, whereas, you are looking more toward the ceiling. This can lead to mis-timing of breath, losing your break wave, and scissor kicking in order for your body to regain balance. 2. Hand entry. It's difficult to see on the video, but it looks like the fingers are above the wrist. If they are, essentialt you're pushing the water and putting on the brakes with every stroke. This goes on into affecting the catch and pull position, which seem flat to me. As MadMath said, you need high elbow and wrist during the underwater phase of the stroke. Think back to Yantis avatar showing her catch position with a nice curvy "reach over the barrel" arm position, with elbow above wrist, and wrist above fingers. As said earlier,I don't really know much, I'm slow in the water and have only started swimming last year, but I think I know what I'm supposed to do in the water, whether or not I put it into practice is another matter.

I liked your comments. Gave me something to think about as it relates to my breathing. Hadn't really thought about how far I turn my head.

We've hit our triple digits to stay for probably the next 4+ months. Send some 50° my way, PLEEEEEEASE!!!! This race is a run only, right? Why not Uggs??? I like my full Nike running pants...a little thicker material. And I have a long-sleeved UA shirt that I've used for early morning winter races. I don't like the constrictive feeling of layers, and I really warm up quickly. Do you take long to get warm?

yep run only race. My uggs don't have enough grip so I can't race in them. It takes me a while to get warm and my hands and feet pretty much stay cold from now until the end of September. I have fairly poor circulation. Exercising helps a bit but not a great deal.

Thought about a beanie and gloves?

Yeah, I was going to say, beanie and gloves are huge. Plus you can get cheap ones and ditch them if you get too warm.

At 50 degrees I worry about you being TOO warm. But you know yourself.

Until they make running uggs you may have to hold off on those ...

Those two things can do a lot more than people think. Cheapie gloves should be fine if you need to toss them. I seem to be missing what race this is? 5k, 10k, HM or longer? Exposure time and expected intensity can matter.

If you want more lower leg stuff, are longer socks available? Smartwool ski socks have worked very well for me at a rather wide range of temperatures. I use a loose fitting long sleeve that is fairly adaptable to different temps as well. Smartish tech material and sleeves are easy to roll up if I get a little warm.

I can do well in a lot of conditions, going sub-zero at times, but don't want to overwhelm with ideas. It helps to have an understanding of what makes one cold. On the bike, I know is wind blocking first. So materials have to cover all exposed areas and not let wind go through. Then build in insulation underneath. Fleece is terrible at blocking the wind, but great for insulation. When running, I know the wind blocking will likely cause me to overheat until it's really cold out. I need the air movement for better heat regulation.

Also, will you be ok being cold for the first 5 minutes or so? I'll warm up with extra stuff on, but peel off just long enough ahead of time to let the initial shock wear pass over. I might be a little cold the first 5 minutes, but be fine the rest of the time. Can you make through this ok, or does that trigger something? Wondering if it's something like what Yanti has been through in not being able to warm up for a very long time (forget the name).

^ What Ben said. I tend to overcompensate when dressing for the cold and regret it later. At 50, I might wear Capri tights, a light long sleeved shirt or t-shirt and arm warmers. Most importantly, I would wear gloves and beanie. Everything else will warm up quickly, but if my hands are cold, I tend to start whining to myself. I never throw the gloves away. If I get warm, I carry them because if I run into the wind later, my hands will get cold again, so I put them back on.

That sounds great, Judi. And good for you for getting up at the butt crack of dawn to go swimming. I hit the snooze this morning and was nearly late for my 8 am final exam.

Hills. Good strength training. Run specific. Race specific. Group to push you, you with the self-knowledge how far to and not to push. Yes!

TriAya - 2013-05-14 1:15 AM The dentist had to cut it out. Even I was shocked at its shape and size. I'd spent the night with a small fishhook jammed deep into the gums between two teeth and poking at a nerve root.

So I got sent home with antibiotics, painkillers (a true rarity in Indonesia), and strict instructions to not exert myself for a few days (so the gums can heal together properly and rebuild the blood vessels blah blah blah) and eat soft foods only on one side.

I'm glad that you are home and healing! Take care!

I highlighted the instructions that you are most likely to ignore in the hopes that you follow them!

No more fish hooks!

Wai--wha--who, me? Innocent

You sound like the dentist. Guaranteed if you're in horrendous pain and NOT a morning person at all with the first appointment (but thank God for that), the dentist will turn out to be a very loud, far too cheerful soul who blares things at you like NO MORE FISHING YOUNG LADY! HAHAHAHA!

Ha ha effing ha ha ha indeed.

O-KAY o-KAY I'll rest. I'll also confess that I had a searing fever--not just little mild warmth type of almost-friendly fever--this afternoon, so that would explain the ridiculous fatigue ... and further augments the need for rest. Sigh.

But hey, Mars bars are VERY soft!

Agree with needing a beanie and gloves, somewhat disagree with the ditching comment, that's what sports bras are for!  They make wonderful 'glove boxes', LOL.  I've had gloves, hats, headbands, you name it stuffed down there at one time or another but not usually all together!

I have a lighter pair of UA gloves I wear for the 40-55 -ish range and a warmer pair I wear (I forget the brand) when it's colder than that.  But YMMV as I get heated up quickly and am a total sweater.  I have multiple beanies I try.  For me the main thing is keeping my ears warm/covered, so headbands come into play as well depending on the temp. Beanies/hats for colder, headband for not as cold.

The "glove box" is a great idea.  Never thought of that.

Our races usually gather discarded hats/gloves/sweatshirts and donate them to the homeless shelters.

I agree with the comments about holding on to the gloves. In my afore mentioned November race I put on/off a couple of times during the race, based on the wind. As for the glove box, ummmm that would likely double my "size" Embarassed

I like the purple highlights. Not over the top but feminine. I'm waiting for the matching helmet, they had to order it in because I have a small noggenEmbarassed. They also have a pair of matching gloves that I'm contemplating...

Did you take her for a test ride? How was it????

rrrunner - 2013-05-13 9:27 PM Here she is! Home safe & sound after a short maiden voyage. I'm thinking Fiona, for the character in Burn Notice. I'd trust that chica with my 6 any day, and she's hawt.

Awesome!  Perfect name.  Fiona is totally hawt and so is your bike.

IT. WAS. AWESOME! I went for a 4 mile ride around the neighborhood. I was amazed at how much the cracks in the road didn't hurt, and I wasn't even wearing bike shorts!!! And the gears!! I felt like it had about 60 gears! The gear I needed was always there and then some!!! James, from the LBS, said that the Felt women's bike is designed for women like me, with long legs and a "petite" torso. The angles felt so different, more aggressive, but good! Still gotta work out the kinks with the aero bottle tho...

I am glad you are liking it, but the aero bottle kinks get a boo. Hopefully it is a "getting used to it" kind of thing.

I redneck engineered a torpedo bottle with a feeder tube this winter. Bottle rack, zip ties, a bottle from a seminar I attended  a while ago and air tube from a fish tank. It worked great this weekend. I never had to get out of aero to drink, just pulled the tube up to my mouth. And it was the proper length to leave it there when I rode, so I could occasionally sip on it.

I never had a problem with this bottle on the old bike but it sits differently on the Felt so we just have to tweek it a bit to get it set correctly.

Okey Dokey, bit of a long winded post this one, sorry......

I have been concerned of late that I suck at hilly rides. My concern is because in July I have a 112 mile bike ride around the "hilly" Ironman Wales bike course to do. It has a 9 hour cut off I think. I have been trying to compare my rides with others to try and gauge how I'm doing. I know this is not ideal, but it's all I have. I would much rather have a blurry picture of where my abilities lay than to go into the ride blind.

On that note, here is the elevation map for the IMWales route that I will be covering in July...

IMWales bnike

And with a few lines drawn in Paint, a few ROUGH calculations I get this...

IMWales bike with gradients

Now, I didn't do all the hills, but I wanted to do a few to get a general feel for the course.

In comparison, I completed a 26.5 mile "Hilly" route yesterday that took me 1hr 56m to do. Firstly, I know I wouldn't have been able to do another lap of that course, never mind another 3.2 laps, and even if I could have done another 3.2 laps, at that speed I would not be able to get around the July course under the cut off time. This is where my worries have come from. Which is why I have tried to assess where my fitness lies, and what my abilities are at the moment. My concern started when I saw some of the charts and average speeds TJ was putting on here a few group sessions back, and how I was nowhere near those average speeds. I know we can't compare directly between two different courses, but surely some comparisons, such as total climbs, total meters climbed, climbing distance, gradients, average speed etc can be made.

Looking at my training ride yesterday,  http://connect.garmin.com/activity/312328703  and comparing it against my upcoming event course, I see that I have been training on a much tougher course Laughing, which has allayed my concerns a little. I'm sorry but I can't seem to get a screen grab of the garmin elevation graph for the ride yesterday but, in essence, the ride consists of 3 notable climbs over the 43km circuit.

The first climb has 265m of elevation over a distance of 5.6km. Giving a gradient of 4.73%.
The second hill has 134m of elevation over a distance of 2km. Giving a gradient of 6.7%.
The final hill has 62m of elevation over a distance of 1km. Giving a gradient of 6.2%.

So, in comparison, it seems I am training on much steeper hills. Which might be the reason my average speed sucks. This has given me some confidence in being able to complete the course. Further to this, I plan on trying to increase the speed I complete my training circuit and also to gradually increase the amount of laps I can complete until I can manage 4 laps in 8 hours by September 2014. That way, the Ironman Wales route should seem relatively flat by then Laughing.

I'd be interested in any comments The Pod has on this.

And seems I'm throwing out pics...

First things first, amazing scenery and a beautiful puppy!!!!

Looks to me like you are on the right track for the bike ride. You apparently have the climbing legs and, as you said, just need to keep working on the endurance for the full 112 miles. There were times I was nervous about my ability but that spurred me on to work harder and I think it will for you too. There sure is a lot of climbing for IM Wales. Just keep increasing your distance and make sure your route includes regular large hills. I set my routes so that I started with hills, had hills in the middle and ended with hills. Set your heart on it and the legs will catch on Laughing

Darren, first of all, I run and ride a lot of crazy hills but holy hell!!! That is hilly!!!

So you get some major cred for that shyte!

Anyway, it looks like you are doing all the right things to set yourself up for success. I think it's a good thing that you are doing the math and a little freaked out. That should keep the fire under yer arse until September. You will do just fine.
