I don't like being 'addicted' to anything... I dunno. Reading a book where this is an excerpt:

Coffee : Don’t kill the messengers: Coffee should not be a part of your daily routine. Caffeine affects every organ system, from the nervous system to the skin. There is nothing beneficial about starting your day with pesticide-laden coffee beans, hormone-filled milk, and sugar or artificial sweeteners. We know it is addictive and people would rather lose a limb than live without coffee. But it just isn’t good for you. Take a week or two to wean yourself off completely. And never look back.

I never put anything in my coffee at work, but if I have a starbucks I will get the sugar free syrups and such. A few weeks ago I didn't have any on a Saturday and was completely knocked out after a 10K race, laying on the couch for 3 hours with a massive headache and I just felt like crap. Worthless. It was terrible. I don't like being that dependent on ANYTHING. So I'm experimenting. Going to try some sort of decaf tea.

Wurkit you drink tea... any suggestions?

ahahahaha what book is that?  now, correct, caffeine is addictive and coffee to the level i drink it is prob not healthy BUT a cup or two a day is perfectly healthy and actually GOOD FOR YOU.  unless you are pregnant or at high risk for osteoperosis.

Hehe, I was just going to weigh in on this! I'm definitely a huge proponent of "caffeine is addictive and you DON'T need it to function". All tea has MUCH less caffeine than regular coffee. Black tea has the most, then green/white and herbal tea has none. I like to mix them up. Republic of Tea makes some nice ones, though kinda expensive. I also like the Tazo and the Stash flavors. I currently have Tazo apricot vanilla blend which is nice, as well as a blueberry/white cranberry white tea. Some of the fruit ones can be a little over-powering - but it depends on the brand. Celestial Seasonings raspberry is gross, but I've had other raspberry teas that are much more subtle. Same with "spiced" ones. Some are way too strong and fake tasting. Mix it up, and test out a few flavors at a time. I tend to buy green and white blends.

Loose tea is better than the prepackaged stuff - but it's pricey. For loose tea, I recommend Jasmine Pearls - they are little "pearls" of tea leaves that unravel as they steep. Jasmine tea is fragrant and fresh and light. Love it. And REAL chai is delicious.

Coffee Won't Grind You Down: May Reduce Risk of Suicide, Study Concludes

By William J. Cromie

Gazette Staff

Go ahead and have that second cup of coffee, even a third or fourth cup. You may be protecting yourself against depression and suicide.

Women who drink two, three, or more cups of coffee a day are less likely to commit suicide than non-coffee drinkers, according to a Medical School study of 86,626 nurses. That rather startling conclusion comes less than a month after another study of the same women excluded coffee as a cause of heart disease.

These results apply equally to men, other research has found. For example, a check of 120,000 people in northern California showed substantially the same lowering of suicide risk for two, three, even six or more daily cups of coffee for both sexes.

"You always hear about coffee and caffeine being bad for your health," notes Ichiro Kawachi, assistant professor of medicine. "Our studies have found no basis for implicating coffee in any serious long-term health effects."

The good feeling produced by java apparently comes from caffeine's impact on the nervous system. "You would get the same advantage from the caffeine in tea or soda, but you'd have to consume gallons of these beverages to get the same effect," Kawachi says. The same would be true for decaffeinated coffee which, despite its claim, still has a small amount of the stimulant.

"One intriguing possibility would be a study to determine if caffeine can help prevent or ameliorate depression," Kawachi says.

The suicide study was published in the March 11 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. The heart disease investigation was reported in the Feb. 14 Journal of the American Medical Association. The authors of both reports include researchers at the Medical School, School of Public Health, and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Yeah I'm not really worried about depression or suicide... and I semi-agree that 1-2 cups a day (which was what I was drinking) is probably not going to kill me. There are a ba-jillion studies out there medically arguing both sides. And no one can argue that NOT drinking it is bad for you.

I just don't like being almost fully dependent on it. Like I said, one day without it and I was worthless! What good is that.

Meh the book is "Skinny Btitch"

Cool I will check out green and white stuff. I'd like to have the benefits of the (decaffinated) tea and I still like drinking something warm in the mornings...

Yup - I am caffeine-sensitive, and the green/white teas don't bother me at all.
