No. But I get a distinct impression from another group that's it's not smart training to neglect bike upgrades. I mean you have a tri bike and aero helmet. What made you decide that?

No. But I get a distinct impression from another group that's it's not smart training to neglect bike upgrades. I mean you have a tri bike and aero helmet. What made you decide that?

The tri bike cost $490 and the current helmet was taking considerable chunks of skin with it. Aero lid was warmest replacement (was thinking of NZ).

A bike that's comfortable and that you like riding pretty much trumps everything else. It's not like you think you're going to do long course anytime soon, and you're doing great with short course, so shorty aerobars and if you can get a good deal on an aero helmet, great. That'll buy you a minute or two in an Olympic. You could rent a disc cover for the back wheel, but really not necessary.

OK, I have homework for all of the Manatees (other than texting me lewd photos)

Warm up! Warm up for your workouts and establish a routine. Then use this same routine for your races. It doesn't have to be long or complicated.  You just need to figure out what works for you but it's extremely important. This is probably the biggest lesson I have learned this year.

Well, right now, I am walking for 5min/0.5km before I start running.  Biking I just spin easy for a few minutes while I get my workout up on TR and my watch going.  Swimming I follow what the coach puts on the board, but generally about 600m combo of swim, pull, kick.  I need a looooooooong warmup before I feel comfy in the pool (ie breathing under control).

Ummmm I hate to admit this (please don't kill me)... I am horrible at warming up.  My routine for swimming is - jump in and swim at a moderate pace.  I guess that counts. 

For cycling - I just jump on the bike and go...

For running - I have a routine of stretching.  Always stretch my calves, quads, hamstrings and usually loosen up the ankles.  I don't pre run - or run slow - or walk to warm up.  I just take off, and usually manage to maintain my pace throughout the run.  

How would a warm up (and what would you recommend) help my running?  

Yes, no kidding. I saw it first hand lol.

"Performance may be improved, as an appropriate warm up will result in an:

Increased speed of contraction and relaxation of warmed muscles

Dynamic exercises reduce muscle stiffness

Greater economy of movement because of lowered viscous resistance within warmed muscles

Facilitated oxygen utilization by warmed muscles because haemoglobin releases oxygen more readily at higher muscle temperatures

Facilitated nerve transmission and muscle metabolism at higher temperatures; a specific warm up can facilitate motor unit recruitment required in subsequent all out activity

Increased blood flow through active tissues as local vascular beds dilate, increasing metabolism and muscle temperaturesAllows the heart rate get to a workable rate for beginning exercise"

Sorry for the formatting. I probably don't need to sell warming up. Just do a few searches and you can get any additional information not covered above.

Thank you.. I will start incorporating some sort of warm up before running.  Would a nice little 1/2 mile job and some stretching suffice?

1) My swim this morning ROCKED! I thought it would be another tough one because I just wasn't feeling it but I must have taken on my Manatee-ness when I hit the water because I did a set that I did two weeks ago and I beat my total time by over 2 minutes for a 3000 yard set!!!! The details are in my log. WooHoo!!!!!!!! Thank you Yanti & Skrat!!!!! Laughing

2) Today is Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday so I am listening to his brilliance today at work. It's a Phantom, Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat kinda day. (I like Jesus Christ Superstar too but don't have it on my iPod)Tongue out

3) Saw a picture on FB that reminded me of Jo so I am sharing.Laughing

4) I made the Ding Dongs/Twinkies for my MIL's birthday so I am sharing a picture of those.Cool

5) My Lobo's totally messed up my bracket Yell

I love hearing this.... Awesome job!

It's going to be a little different for everyone, and will (to some extent should) be different depending on what type of workout/to what purpose follows it.

Try that and see how it works for you. If you don't stretch currently, I'd be more inclined to start off trying just the additional 1/2 mile very easy for shorter run workouts at the start.

Alright, here is what I consider to be a reasonable definition of strides:

"Strides are those 60- to 100-meter "pickups" that runners typically do just before speedwork or races. In these instances, they generally warm up well, stretch, and then use strides as a finishing touch to ease into fast-running mode. The reasons for doing strides before a bout of fast running are multiple: muscles need to be flooded with blood, fast-twitch muscle fibers need to be recruited, and race pace must be briefly simulated to get the body and mind ready to run fast.

Strides also improve your neuromuscular coordination, as the bursts of speed stimulate neural pathways. Just as a pianist's fingers fly over scales that have been practiced repeatedly, your coordination and form become more fluid from these short but frequent doses of speed tacked onto the ends of easy runs. Result: You become faster."

 

What is important is to be sure they are "fast" not "hard." The best way I can describe this is to move your body forward quickly but do so with your entire body relaxed. Don't tighten your face with strain or clench your jaw, don't ball your fists. Try your best to be fluid. I know this is easier said than done but that is why we practice it. Strides should truly be your version of perfect running.

I second what Yanti said about stretching. I never do static stretching before a run. Rarely afterwards. Often I do a little dynamic stretching beforehand but the priority is the jogging and strides.

My first season I used a 20 year old alum road bike with shifters on the down tube. The next season I bought a new Felt some alum some carbon road bike and last season - because of the great Cervelo Share the Road deal- I bought my tri bike. However, I don't have an aero helmet. They make me laugh and I would be self conscious using one. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Chrissy Wellington used a regular helmet at Kona, so if she doesn't ( didn't) need one, neither do I. I'm pretty sure I'm just a touch off her abilities, so I get to follow her lead

Not that it matters, probably, but this is the same for me. I do strides at the end of a run, and then walk a little. If my Achilles is bothering me at all, I do some heal dips (I'm not sure what they are called -- I stand on the edge of a step and dip my heals below the step and then back up again). Sometimes I stretch my IT Band, and the PT gave me some stretches to do for my SI Joint, but I'm not very good about doing either one of those sets of stretches. I never, ever stretch before a work out.
