How is everyone figuring out pacing? The two HIMs I did this year were hilly both on bike and run. I was going to take my HIM time X2 and add 45 mins. But Florida is flat so I don't know how to factor this in or should I?

Did a 6 hour bike on Friday, then did a20 mile run this morning. Felt great on the run and the bike went great considering the terrible wind conditions. Feeling so much better about race day. Heading out now to go give the new wetsuit a trial run in the James river.

Last big push done.  5k swim on Friday, Saturday was a 5 hr bike (92.5 mi) with a 1 hour transition run followed by a 20 mi run today.  Funny to say but it wasn't that bad.  But, I am getting tired of those long rides!

Next week is a little easier.  Three swims for about 12k yards, only 2 bike rides the longest being 3 hours and only 3 runs with the longest being 1:45.  YES!  We are getting closer!

Enjoy,

Duane

Just rember folks it better to be 10% under trained than 1% over trained. I sat down with friends who do ironmans every year and some FOPs and MOPs and one key thing they told me is do not worry about your bike or speed so much because the start of the race begins at the run out sign. In the first 6miles of the race you will pass 10% of the field and if you steady jogging/ running by mile 13 you would have passed 25% of the field who over did it on the bike or nutrition problems and then mile 18 is where I need focus put my head down and do the work to finish . They told me to focus on taking in nutrition on the bike . It was reallity check talk with me and this has put my mind as ease and let me know that I have friends who care about me and want to see me finish. Just wanted to share since this was my big training week and I had some doubts creep in.

Last century before IMFL is DONE.  Windy and HOT.  115 when I finished.  At least it won't be that hot on race day for us

OK, I rode the bike course yesterday. Here's what I observed for those who wont see it til race day:

Start to 79-flat w/cross winds (not bad)

79 to 20(Ebro)- flat, had a head wind, good road, maybe false flat?

20 to 77-lots of traffic, cross wind, slight elevation incline, very slight roller or two.

77to388-tailwind & FAST!!!!

388 to 20-you pay for that fast section on 77,slight incline back to 20. worse section of race!

20 to 79- fast w/slight crosswind, a few mild rollers & felt elevation decline-good section!

79 to front beach-Fast,Fast,Fast=tailwind w/ elevation drop. fastest section!

That is a very good break down of the course. I rode it a week or so ago and that is all true. Especially the 388-20 payback. I had a slight breakdown there but then you make the turn onto 79 and you get some wind back into your sails . I wish we had the nice bike lanes that Florida has. I fight for every inch of road here in the rolling bluegrass hills of Kentucky.
Getting excited!

I think the biggest mistake people make is over cooking the bike.  Its not worth loosing an hour or two on the run just to "gain" 30 minutes on the bike.  At IMLP I ran up 600 people.  An IM marathon is the only place you can be running 9 min/mile pace and feel like you're running a 2:50 marathon because everyone else is slogging.

Thanks.. that makes feel good... I put almost 3000 Feet on my 100 miles ride.. so that confirms how flat it is..

That's right in line with Beach 2 Battleship:

Distance: 112.18 mi
Elevation Gain: 1,042 ft
Elevation Loss: 1,050 ft

Yeah, I'm trying not to overthink stuff and it's not working all that well.

I also ran 1 loop of the run yesterday before heading home. It's a nice run-except the State Park section-It will be no fun on the 2nd loop. As we have all heard-watch out for speed bumps & cracks (there are lots throughout the entire run.)

I feel better about the race after training on course. I anticipate many people blowing up after pushing the bike too hard. I completed IMKY in 09 & could not believe how many people were cokked after 3 miles of the run. I'll be in town Wed of race week and would love to do a group swim.

Please let it be cool but not cold on race day.  Did a 19 mile run yesterday in the 88 degree heat.  This was sooooo much more difficult than the 70 bike/11 run on Thursday.  Perhaps my body is just tired!

Trying to move up the arrival tim in order to do the practice swim on Thursday morning.  7 or 7:30 at the boardwalk?

I am getting the jitters.  I have all but had to abandon the run from now till the race because of my It band.  Feeling really good about the swim and bike, and am scared to death of the run, or it may be a walk at this point.

Got in a couple slow 2 hr runs up until a week or so ago, and the It band kicks in after a few miles.  Tried to walk 5 this past friday, and it flared up on my walk.  So I guess I am going to have to let it heal from now till race time.    I am adding some bike / swim to keep decent volume but hope that I can pull off a 4/1 run walk till it turns into a walk.

I am hoping that some run fitness will still be there, but all the run fitness in the world is no good if the knee won't cooperate.

If you're not, take glucosamine. It cannot hurt in any case and it made my IT band totally go away during long runs. Takes a few days/week to get good and into your system.

Been there - it stinks.  First marathon my IT flared at mile 9.  I had my IT band strap with me and it saved the run.  Not sure if you have one but it might be worthwhile.

First IM for me so I'm not too worried about pace.  I know what I should swim and ride and have a idea on the run but until I get there, who knows.  The run is the uncertain part of this crazy thing.

enjoy,

Here is another place that rents pontoon boats....appears to be cheaper and $10 coupon not sure if gas is included.

Wow.  You thought 20 had a lot of traffic?  It's 79 that scares the CRAP out of me!  I ride on 20 every weekend so I guess maybe I'm used to it.

I agree with your assessment and addendum that wind changes everything.  FWIW, I am SURE that 79 is a false flat uphill going North.  Not so sure I would consider 20 westbound a decline...felt very flat in both directions to me....
