Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Kansas 5150 Swim cap was a US Masters cap in white. Were they all like that. I always thought having the event printed on the cap was a nice touch. Is masters swimming a sponsor for this event? Edited by reecealan 2013-05-17 9:45 PM |

Extreme Veteran 516 Olathe, KS | Subject: RE: Kansas 5150 Picked up my packet and got a free copy of Chrissie's book, which I hadn't bought yet. Cool deal if there was acopy available and you wanted to read the book. I know there is a lot of random complaints on here, but just remember, come Sunday morning you know you're going to swim 1.5k, bike 40k, and run 10k (or less if you are doing the sprint). Aside from needing to know the course, the start time, and the transition open time, what else is there to worry about? Now you just have to show up and race. Just keep it simple. I never understand this constant need for communication on stuff that ultimately doesn't matter at the end of the day. Transition closes at 7:15. It makes no difference if my wave goes off at 7:30 or 8:00, I plan on being ready. Bracelet or no bracelet, I'm sure the organizers will make sure that I as an athlete with a bib number and a timing chip will be allowed to race. Sheesh. Edited by Barkeep 2013-05-17 11:29 PM |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Kansas 5150 Originally posted by kuatb Bummer, one of the VERY few questions they answered on the facebook page was that you don't have assigned transition spots. It's first come, first serve. Seems silly to have such a free for all, but whatever. I don't think I've ever done a sprint/oly with assigned transition spots - didn't think that was standard protocol. I'm thinking back to past Tinmans, Shawnee Missions, Midwest Mayhems, Jackson Countys, Wichita Mudwater, El Dorado Tri, Spring Migration... nope none that I recall. Some have had age group racks, but within the rack was first come/first served. |

Extreme Veteran 1279 | Subject: RE: Kansas 5150 Well, I qualified for Des Moines and will get the entry fee waived by being 4th in my age group. Sort of bitter-sweet. A few strong competitors in my age group did not compete when it looked like it might get cancelled and the swim was a certain no-go. Completely understand their decision. Also, I was only a couple of minutes outside of 1st place and I think I had a good shot at making that up if we had a swim. Oh well, we still had a fun bike-run session. Had they waited just 15 more minutes, I think the swim would have been on and we could have had a full tri. But I understand their time constraints and there was no way they could have known the weather would dissipate as fast as it did. My Garmin had me at 23.6mph average on the bike and about 7:03/mile on the run. Both the bike and run courses were a tad long, so the official results differ from my Garmin. Thrilled with the bike and happy with the run, although I still need to push the pace a bit more than I did. The second time up the hill on the run wasn't a fun one. |

If so, how did you like it? |

Extreme Veteran 1279 | Subject: RE: Kansas 5150 New bike. Giant Trinity Composite, Ventus II LTD aero bars, and HED Jet 6/9 wheelset and wheel cover. Really like it now that I had worked out the fit. Not a professional fitting, which I should do someday, but the bike "feels" right and the speed seems to be there. Who knows, maybe a proper fitting would be more productive? Here it is without the wheel cover, and I rode yesterday with only the bottle between the arms: http://forum.roadfly.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=6592&d=1367887... You probably don't want to hear this but I'm saying it anyway, the three guys that fnished in front of you would typically take over 27-28 minutes to do any Oly swim. So given that you went under 21 minutes last year, those three were VERY fortunate that there wasn't a swim yesterday. Killer bike and run yesterday, was good fun. Hopefully my schedule and budget will allow me to join you in Des Moines. |

I wish we could've had the swim. It looked very doable, especially while we were waiting in the bike chute to start the race. Like you, I think I could've moved up in the rankings had the swim been held (at least that's what I'll tell myself). My Garmin showed me going faster and longer on the bike but I did have the run course almost spot on. I didn't walk the hill the second time on the run, but I had to stop for second or two once I got to the top - my legs were on the verge of cramping up. I think that speaks my need for more work on the bike than the run. Now I have to decide if I want to race Hy-Vee or not. . . |

The bottle cage is mounted on one of these that also incorporates the Garmin mount: http://alden-designs.com/bta-between-the-aerobars-bottle---computer... It is awesome. The wheel cover is the Wheelbuilder Aerojacket. |

I could have swore you had a disc (at least I remember the womp-womp-womp when you passed me in Topeka last year). Sorry for so many questions...I'm considering the Aerojacket myself. |

Extreme Veteran 1279 | Subject: RE: Kansas 5150 Didn't have it last year. Love it! Just have to be sure to secure the drive side cover internally to the spokes with plenty of packing tape. Much more stable in strong crosswinds than without it. Sounds counter-intuitive, but is true. |

Extreme Veteran 695 Olathe | Subject: RE: Kansas 5150 For those that stayed and raced, how were the roads and did most of the participants stay upright on the bike? That was my biggest hesitation. I figured I could keep myself somewhat safe, but was just uneasy about how much water was still on the pavement with everyone else riding around yada yada yada... insert more excuses here. In retrospect I could have gone later in the time trail for more time to let the pavement dry out, but I just wasn't interested in taking a chance. Good work. Hopefully the rest of the season stays dry. |

Extreme Veteran 516 Olathe, KS | Subject: RE: Kansas 5150 No bike accidents that I'm aware of or that I saw. There may have been a slightly higher amount of people with flats, but nothing obscene. You mostly just had to deal with a little spray coming off people's back tires. No puddles or standing water on any of the roads. I felt completely safe. Although, at the bike turnaround my back wheel did slip a little because of my speed and the type tire I had on. |
