Welcome aboard Amy!  There are a lot of great people on this board and you can always find someone who has or has had the same issues, questions and dilemas as you.  We range from elite-boarderline-pros to BOPers.

Thanks for volunteering!

I don't understand why this race is so unpopular? Why is it that IMWI sells out right away, but IMKY doesn't?

Just tryin' to wrap my mind around what could be so different. Is it the fact that it's too close to Kona for people trying to qualify? Is it crappy weather? A crappy course?

It's not unpopular, it's just newer.  2008 was only it's second year.

I am guessing the heat and the Ohio river swim keep some at bay.

As far as qualifying for Kona at this race, you would only have a six week turnaround and have to make quick travel plans. It also has fewer slots than WI, LP, AZ, and FL.

I have heard that a slot in the M35-39 rolled all the way down last year. Can anyone confirm this that was there?

Apart from travel plans, how realistic is it to race well (as opposed to surviving) in Kona 1.5 months after IMKY?  I get tired just thinking about it, but maybe that's because I just got back from the gym.

I have not researched this, but just my thoughts on why IM KY has not sold out.

  1.  It is almost guaranteed to NOT be a wetsuit swim.  (although it is not mass start, so those two things should cancel each other out)
  2. It is HOT
  3. It is HUMID
  4. It is HOT
  5. It is HUMID
  6. It is a "newer" race
  7. Wisconsin which is very popular is only a week away.
  8. Very close in time wise to Kona (as others have said).
  9. Did I mention it is hot and humid?

I think all races are tough. . . and it can be hot at any race no matter location.  Even CDA has been 95 degrees some years.  Wisconsin has been hot/humid and then the next year cold/rain. . .

Again, these are just my thoughts. . nothing scientific here.

The guy that won IMWI (McDonald) came in 2nd in Louisville 7 days before IMWI.

It's been a little less than 4 weeks since IMKY 2008 and I ran my fastest 6 miles of the year today.

I don't think 1.5 months after the race one is going to still be at less than peak.

It'd be one thing if the race did not sell out....but to say it is unpopular becuase it doesn't sell out as fast as the other M-dot races that have been around as long is misleading.

Do non-Mdot races all sell out w/i hours or days?   I really don't know.  I'm just curious.

~Mike

I do not think the race is unpopular. I think Louisville is unpopular. I did IMLOU this year and loved it. It was my first Ironman. It was not the first Ironman on my list to do just because of the location but I wanted  to do one and thats what was open for registration and had good shot of not being sold out. Instead of taking a chance and missing out I signed up. The event is top notch I have no complaints about any of it.

I got a slot at IMMOO for 2009 at online registration and will do that instead. If I would not have gotten one for IMMOO I would have went back to IMLOU for 2009.

Seems strange to do so almost a year ahead of time, but I just booked our hotel rooms for the race. We are taking the Mother and Father in law with us to help with our boys. This will be my first attempt at the IM and my wife is very excited to not just watch me, but all the people finish. We are staying at the Hampton Inn since I travel a lot and was able to get the rooms using Hilton points.

Some sell out rather quickly, some never sell out. Beach to Battleship sold out pretty quickly even though this is the premier year and it's the same weekend as IMFL. However Redman seems very popular but I've never heard of it selling out.

Nope I think around 125-150 for the full again this year. I think they will take 700 combined full and half.

Has anyone done the Cardinal Half Iron in Lousiville? I hear it uses a good portion of the course. Curious if anyone has any thoughts on that race.

Adam,

I hope it's not "strange" to book this far in advance as I am booked into the Courtyard on 2nd St. for Sat and Sun night and over in Indiana at the Comfort Suites for Thur and Fri nights.... (could not justify the extra cost per night for just me doing the practice swims, etc. so we are going to have the larger room for when the family drives over Sat. AM).

See ya there!
Paul

Add me to the list of repeat offenders!

Sherm - I did the Cardinal Harbour Race and it was the perfect practice race for IMLou. The swim was in the Ohio River and the bike course was on much of the IM course... and it was FREAKING HOT. Ironman day weather was mild compared to Cardinal Harbor, lol. I'll definitely do it again next year. Heather Gollnick raced Cardinal Harbour too! I have a RR if you're interested.
