Good job site managers! The new format looks awesome! Now on to an actually question:
With regards to all of your bike training, how far are your long bike rides if you are training for 56 miles? Ideally you want to do more than that, but at this point in your training where is a good place to be at?

If I were riding outside consistently right now I'd be somewhere in the 60 - 80 range for my long rides.

But I'm not ...... so my longest have been only close to 50 the few times I've had a chance to go longer.  We'll see how tomorrow goes.  May try to go longer but I have to get into work for some time.

My long rides are 50-60 miles right now but will increase as the race gets closer.

For those of you that have done the race before, do you run a disk or is it too windy for that?

The last two years the race has not been terribly windy.  I for sure would have been on a disk if I had one.  But three years ago I do believe the wind was out of control.  I would have opted out for that.   Best bet is to bring all of your race wheels with you so that you have choices come race time.

I always get uneasy about those seeking to compare training load.  I'm every bit as tempted to compare my current training against others doing the race, but depending on your race day goals and the approach taken by your individual training plan or coach, how long your long ride should be right now is a VERY individual thing.  Remember that the long ride is only one variable in training for one of the three sports... so your weekly training load could be far higher even without a very long ride in the mix at the moment.  As a very simple example, on race day, a z2 ride of 3 hours today may be worth less than a z4 ride of 2 hours today.

For the record, my long ride is currently well below the others posted in this thread, yet I feel very on pace to peak for Eagleman.  And having looked at the logs of several others I know doing the race, my long ride is longer than many of them.

All that to say, don't worry if you're not doing exactly what the person next to you is doing for a single key workout.  And definitely don't freak out if it that 60+ mile long ride being done by some won't show up on your schedule for some time...

As a very basic example, if you took a 2 hour ride on 4/4 and build 10% volume every week and took a recovery week every 4th week (no build), you'd be riding nearly 4 hours by the last ride in may (and have two weeks to taper for EM).  I personally think, again dependent on your goals, that is a long ride of sufficient length and then some to do EM (a totally flat bike course).

I bet there are LOTS of people who ride 56 miles for the first time on race day, who are very happy with their results.

Finally - ride lots!  None of the above was meant to discourage long rides (I have some very long one's planned in the near future)... but you're a long way from screwed if you don't have a long ride 2+ months out from the race that is longer than race distance.

Is 10% a good rule of thumb for increasing long bike ride distance week 2 week (not counting the recovery week)?

Totally individual... I believe the history of the 10% rule is actually from running training plans, and most "forum experts" still advocate for this number when it comes to the run, but allow for more flexibility with swim/bike.

My own self coached plan has 10%, 10%, 20%, recovery, repeat... mostly because I ran out of time to build to IM distance in July at 10%.

Hypothetically, for someone coming off injury, I'd recommend a conservative approach and listening to your legs and not treating the prescribed volume like bible.

Hi everybody. Eagleman is going to be my first triathlon, so this might be a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway.
On the bike course, will the gatorade/water be in bottles that will fit in a bike cage, or will I have to transfer it into an appropriate dispensing device?
Thanks in advance.

In addition to volume in the saddle, I'd give consideration to riding while locked IN YOUR TRAINER, in relatively the same gear ratio.  The course is flat-flat-flat.  Aside from the heat last year, not having enough training time hunched over, in the same gearing, really caused me back problems late in the bike.

If I remember, they gave us bottles that were the ultra-electrolyte endurance version of Gatorade, which fit into the cage just fine.

This year, the folks at Gatorade seem to have rebranded themselves as "G".  Whether they will keep the bottles the same is anybody's guess.  Keep checking at your local stores for the endurance versions and buy one you like so you can check the fit in your cage.

Of course, you may want to check the Eagleman sponsor's list to ensure they're not changing to someone else other than Gatorade.

Regards,

pgd

Thanks.
Last I checked they were still planning on using Gatorade Endurance on the course.

Last year I invested in an "Aqua-cell" by profile design, which has around 40+ ounces of capacity. I didn't really use my bottle cages but poured the water they game me straight into it. It worked wonders especially since it was so hot. I find the easier it is to access fluids the more you are likely to drink and not get dehydrated.

How does one know if they are over training? I feel fine (i.e not tired or fatigued, iron is good, good nutrition, sleep well etc), but looking at my training log, it looks like I am over training. Any thoughts? Has anybody officially overtrained at some time in their tri career? What did it feel like? What are the warning signs?

With that, I heard they were thinking about re-doing the bike course and reversing it this year? Is this true??

I hope not! That means most of the ride will be done into the wind!

Granted, I've never done the race, but how:
1) do you know what direction the wind will be blowing, and
2) is a ride that starts and stops in the same place ever "mostly" into the wind.

No idea if these bike routes are reliable, but they appear to have been posted by two different users and are in agreement with each other... these would be for PAST courses (I too heard this year may change, but that the only change would be the direction of the course).

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/md/cambridge/326504516

My question - I know there are no hills or anything to warrant a pre-ride, but I too will probably ride the course at least once before the race just to get a feel for things, to help develop a plan for my race strategy, etc.  Is the route safe to ride outside of race day?  Is there high/low traffic?  Are there good/poor shoulders?

Thanks.

I have no basis to verify if these are the same or different from previous years, but they are the direct links from the current Eagleman website:

bike course   run course  The bike seems to agree with what JoshKaptur posted above.

If anyone knows the answer to JoshKaptur's question about ride-ability for practice, I am intersted in that as well.   Thanks.

I also got that same email, and they are re-designing the swim since the boat ramp is being torn apart. Seems we will be going through sand on the way out, so my question is: Do we need to provide our own water to wash our feets before getting into our cycling shoes. Sand just does not sound like a lot of fun.

Bike course is going to stay the same, at least for now!

We can all see that anything is up to changing, even up to the night before!!
