I'm eating fairly healthy over all but have been reading that I should be adding a bit more protien to my diet especially right after a run. I love natural peanut butter for some extra protein. I usually make a snack with a banana sliced...then put natural peanut butter (2 tbs), half of a Boston Creme pie yogurt(Yoplait) and granola with almonds. I have been eating this every night for the past year....cant get enough of it. Generally do a berry version of that in the summer and it is great .... seems that natural peanut butter is winning here. Just have to do it. |

Veteran 267 Peoria Heights | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED Got a early Christmas present tonite - a pair of Yaktrax Pro. Seems my husband is worried about me killing myself since I insist on running in the middle of snowstorms. This is going to make it hard to keep tomorrow as a rest day. Anyone have a pair and is there anything special I should know before using them? |

Expert 1118 , North Carolina | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED ricmachado - 2010-12-24 3:29 PM One think that I noticed when I tried to start going to the gym is that a 30 min run on a treadmill my distance was around 2.5miles, when I know that I can do a 5K (3.1miles) in less than 30 minutes. this got me little disappointed with going to the gym. is it normal? does everyone runs slower when using the machine or just me? if I use more speed to make 10min/mile, I cannot run the whole 30 minutes. I run out of gas much earlier. the last couple of times I tried I started at 4,5mil/hour and increasing .5mph each 5 minutes it was something like this 10 min warm up @ 4.0 mph 5 min @ 4.5 mph 5 min @ 5.0 mph 5 min @ 5.5 mph 5 min @ 6 mph 5 min @ 5.5 mph 5 min @ 5.0 mph 5 min cool down @ 3.5 mph incline was @ 1.7 should I expect to be slower indoor vs real run? is this slow increase a good way to go? I do a lot of tradmill work vs road work. Treadmills do feel different/pace different than running on the road, just like indoor bike trainers. Part of the issue is simply being indoors where it is stuffy and you're not getting any breeze or air flow. Plus you are not really getting a push off to propel your body forward. I don't use an incline, but I've read that a slight incline better mimics road running. You'll make improvements on the treadmill over time as you get more accustomed to it. Don't beat yourself up over pacing. My guess is that you'll find yourself even faster when you hit the road after doing treadmill work. You may even want to look up some treadmill workouts; they're great for interval sessions. Mix it up by running at a comfort pace for a certain time/distance then run a harder pace for a short distance; repeat with the recovery pace. For instance 4 min comfort pace, 1 min had pace; repeat. But always warm up and cool down for 10 min or so and stretch well afterwards. Also, you may need more hydration on a treadmill. |

Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED NAME: Robin STORY: After many years of thinking how much I want to train and complete a triathlon, last year I finally got up the courage and completed my first sprint tri in March. I was hooked after that and completed my first ever 5k and 2 additional sprint tris. I come from a swimming background and swam in HS. My husband bikes (road and mountain) so I have a lot of advice there. Started running for really the first time ever consistently last February and have made so much progress. I have always been active and enjoy sports, but until last summer never had any real consistency in my workouts. FAMILY: married 15 years. 2 kids, ages 5&7! My husband is my number one chearleader and is going to complete his first run race (1/2 Mary) with me this summer! CURRENT TRAINING: Right now I am focusing on my run and trying to get my base slowly up. Currently trying to run 4x a week with my long run around 1 hour. I am a really slow runner, so I am hoping that consistency in my training will result in some faster times. I am also trying to get 2 trainer rides and 1 or 2 swims in per week. I also love yoga and am doing that about once a week. 2010 races: I started with a mini sprint at our local rec center in March and that was followed by my first ever 5k (29:4x) in April. My first real sprint tri was in June with one more completed in September. 2011 races: I haven't nailed any specific races down yet, but I would like to complete a few 5ks, a 10k, and a 1/2 mary. For tris I would like to complete one or two sprints and my first ever Oly! I live in Wyoming so races are hard to come by and I will have to go down to CO for most of these races. WEIGHT LOSS:I have lost about 10 pounds from this time last year (of course I haven't weighed myself in the last few days) I would love to lose another 10 to 15 pounds and think I can do it! WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE? I am a great chearleader for others and love to see everyone around me realizing their potential - that is super motivating for me! I have one year under my belt so still remember those firsts and can help those that are currently in the same position I was in last year. I still have lots to learn and am super excited to continue the learning process. I look forward to these next few months - I think this group will be fantastic! My logs are all up to date and will continue to log for anyone intersted in my training. |

Champion 7550 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED Merry Christmas! Officially, I'm training for Vineman (140.6) July 30th. 20-week training program means I'll start ignoring my training plan somewhere around March 12th. Until then, it'll be run/swim/run/bike/run/run/run. We had a great Christmas morning. Fixed an apricot-filled coffee cake (and got a 45 minute spin on the trainer while the dough raised). Opened presents and Christmas Dinner is now filling the house with a wonderful aroma as it cooks. |

As for when I will start "official" training not sure when as I haven't decided on which races I am going to do. Wyoming in the winter is loooong so will be continuing winter maintenance for at least another month or two which will include x-country skiing, running and bike trainer. |

Veteran 321 Brooklyn NY | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED Merry Christmas McFuzzies. To Answer Kims question: 1. I've already started training for my next event, the NYC 1/2 Marathon, its my first 1/2 marathon, never run more then 7 miles (and that I've only done once or twice) 2. The race is March 20th. about 3 months to get ready. I'm running 2-3miles a day and 5mile long runs once a week. THE BIG QUESTION: Do I have enough time to build up distance to do this race in 3 months? Ideally I would like to run 4 times a week and build up as gradually as possible. Any suggestions for how to approach training is appreciated : ) |

Here is a link to his beginner's 1/2 plan http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm />It is a 12 week plan, so it would seem to be perfect for your time table. Good luck. Ann-Marie |

Three months is perfect. |
