I always thought Spokane was 4 hours from Boise. Apparently it is almost as far at Seattle in terms of driving.

It looks like we are going to pass on having the wife/daughter come over. They would only be in town from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning and I won't have much time to help out with my daughter. I'll save their first IM/HIM experience for when I go to Kona* or what ever other IM I do first.

It is about 7 hours give or take how fast I drive.  So it should take me less time to do Boise HIM vs driving.

You could always look at CDA next year or Ironman Canada if that would be closer for you.  I am planning on CDA next year since it is basically in my back yard.

I'm just hoping (big time) to qualify for world's in Vegas this year but doubt I will. This is only my second tri with my first being a sprint.

Nonetheless I am sure you will enjoy your race in Boise and will want to do many to come.

If I'm counting right, and rest assured, I could be wrong, I think we have 5 weekends left before the big day!  For me that means 3 hard weekends, 1 starting to cut it back, and a weekend of full taper mode.  So looking forward to this race.  As Magali Tisseyre (winner last year) says, "Bring it!"

What a great week to come down with a terrible sinus infection. Luckily it is still 5 weeks out so I will fully recover in a few days and still have 3 weekends to kill it. 50+ mile ride and an OWS this weekend. Plus I think I'll add a run in there also somewhere. I've been resting since Monday and stressing out about it, but it is the right thing to do.

We're getting close, people!! Is it time to start planning where we're meeting for a congratulatory drink yet??

Also, I'll be swimming in the lake Tues. the 9th after 3pm with my Dad as a kayak spotter and Thurs. 7th anytime if anyone wants to get the shock of the water out of the way...

I'll be getting in around 3pm on Thursday and have just decided to stick with Hotel 43 for where we are staying. We'll probably try and swing by the reservoir right after we get checked in for a very brief swim. Friday we will probably drive as much of the bike course as possible, a short ride and another brief swim.

You had mentioned the Pie Hole earlier.  Is that suitable?

It is delicious! And right in the middle of down town so close to the finish line and the hotels.(you're staying at the Grove, right?) I'm not sure what their beer list is like, but the food is great...we'll see if anyone else who may be more familiar with area (It's been 13 years since moved away. ) chimes in. We'll all agree on something, I'm sure...

$2.50 domestics and $3.25 microbrews/imports is never a bad deal. That is from their website menu.

Hey all, I'm not doing the race this year because we had a baby fairly recently, but I can definitely give you some pointers on places to eat. If you're looking for good beer primarily I'd recomend the Bittercreek Ale House. It's right across the street from Pie Hole and has lots of craft beers on tap along with a large selection of bottled craft beer. It's kind of small and you seat yourself so it could be rough to coordinate a group of people there.

Another great place is Table Rock bar & grill. It is located right next to T2, in fact you bike right by it as you enter T2. They brew their own beer and have a pretty good selection of food I think. I believe you can make reservations here and that might make it easier to coordinate a group.

If there is something else anyone is interested in food wise, let me know and I'll see if I can't come up with something.

I just read some of the posts on water temps. I think it will be warmer than last years race (52). We have had a fairly warm winter with several days in the 90's a few weeks ago. Right now it's a cold spell, but I would guess it will be 55ish if the normal weather resumes. When I swam in it last year I had on a full wetsuit, thermal cap under my race cap and I forgot my ear plugs. Ear plugs make a huge difference. I highly recommend them. I forgot them last year and when I got out of the water I was very dizzy from the cold water hitting my ear drums.

It's a great race and the only thing to really worry about is the weather. So far in the 4 years of the race it's rained the first year, torrential rains the 2nd year, hot and windy the 3rd year and mild and overcast the 4th year. The downtown finish is cool. There will be a huge cheering section behind the library on 8th street right after the run start with several local tri clubs participating. I will be there with all 3 of my cow bells.

Good luck everyone.

I got a mild shin split from my 3 x 1 mile track repeats last week   This is my light running week, so I'm just skipping all running and just doing biking/swimming.  LAME.  I hate shin splints.  Hopefully I just have to take a week off, but I'm prepared for two.  I've already done one half mary and one 10 mile race, and I have another half mary planned in 3 weeks.  I'm not worried about my run fitness.

I've got a 60 mile ride planned for Sunday.  Doing a pretty challenging local HIM course, so that should be a good test of the legs.

I'd love to join you and your pop on Tuesday afternoon, if I may!  Can't pass up the luxury of a spotter.

For after-race meet-up, Pie Hole would be fine, as would Bittercreek.  Both are likely to be pretty crowded.  As an aside, I ran into Chris Lieto postrace in 2010 in the Bittercreek bathroom.  He'd dropped out on the run that day, but couldn't have been nicer.  His first question to me was "How'd you do today?"  I actually hadn't raced, but bless the fellow for asking.

Depending on when I get in on Thursday I might be up for something that day.  I heard one year that they had some sponsored swim before the race.  Anyone know about this and if they are going to do it this year?

I have also heard that it is best to take your bike out on Friday. Just a FYI for those that don't know the start area.  You will have to walk a mile up the hill to T1.

Meeting up someplace afterwards sounds great.  I imagine it might be hard to get into some of the places near by but there are quite a few places to eat down there. The RAM is down the road a ways and there is a place next door to it as well that serves RAM food. Good beer selection there too.

Is it really that far for T1? Judging by the swim map, it doesn't look that far. You come up the boat ramp and up to the parking lot (200 yards at most) up the hill.

When I was there in 2009, you were allowed to drop your bike off in T1 on Friday evening.  On Friday, you could drive across the dam and park/unload right next to T1.  If you wait until Saturday, you will need to park below the dam and it is a long hike from there up to T1.

I  meant where you park at the day of the race should you not drop off your bike the night before. The walk up the hill from below the dam is close to a mile from what I have heard.  Never walked it when I lived there and it doesn't look like it though.

I have friends that have done the race multiple years and they recommend dropping your bike off the night before.  I do believe there is air pumps available for use but I prolly will bring mine with me and then give it to my wife afterwards.

From ramp to T1 though is probably close to 200 yards.  Concrete ramp with asphalt the rest of the way. T1 area is probably 60 yards x 100 from my recollection.

Not that we're keeping track, or anything.  :-)

Too early to obsess about the weather, I suppose?

I think we are almost close enough to obsess on any of it.

Though I'm afraid it might be too late to obsess on training... so I'm just going to obsess on my lack of training

3-3.5 weeks is plenty of time to see some small gains in fitness, but a lot of time to see improvements in some basic fundamentals. Practicing transitions (including setup), walking through race nutrition and even making sure the basics such as trisuit, running shoes and other equipment are ready to race.
