Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Alan. Do you think people are really that interested in the Setup Cup? (not trying to be confrontative- you lose that in electronic form. I am genuinely interested). Personally I pick races for many reasons and almost none of them are for a reason like the Setup Cup. The "do 5 get one free" thing may work for some but I acutally don't do 5 races a year anyway, so I would need to spend more money to get the free race. :-) I wonder how many people are going to schedule around the Setup Cup and plan accordingly. Might be a ton; might be a few. For me, White Lake is a little earlyin the year and a little too intense at that point in the season. I'd like to focus on Raleigh, rather than thining, come mid March "oh crap, I have a HIM to do in a few weeks and then another one in 2 months...what have I done!?" It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I am very keen to see the schedule come out. I do think the White Lake International in early May is a stroke of genious on their part. That thing will sell out quickly. Any idea of how many participants they will allow? Given that there are 2000+ racing Raleigh 70.3, and a ton of those are from NC, I bet demand will be high. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() IIRC, Set Up usually allows 750-800 to sign up for each of their White Lake races, so I expect to see that cap again when the schedule is announced. IMHO, the Set Up Cup is going to be very popular, at least in the first year. I don't think doing 5 races is anything out of the ordinary. Lots of people do the 5 NC races to qualify for end of the year rankings already. For me, it is not really about getting a free race. I have only been in triathlon since 2010, and already, things are getting kind of ho-hum or boring (or pick a different word if you like) in the NC series. (Edit: B2B was a really nice experience......you know, getting to do a race that was not one of the same ones you do year after year. I think the Set Up Cup will offer the same type of experience) Those of us in NC have a huge advantage in qualifying for the Set Up Cup. If an athlete races Azalea, White Lake Half, and Pinehurst then the other 2 races can possibly be done in NC, also. I know that the Granite Falls race in the Trysports series is one of the races. I plan on doing that one (should be 2 weeks after IM 70.3 Raleigh). I will admit, I'm going to do that race and not push it. Since it is basically a super sprint distance with a pool swim, it should be easy to get the race done to fulfill the Set Up Cup requirements. ETA: Once Set Up Events officially announces where the Set Up Cup race will be held, I think the novelty of that particular venue will also drive interest. Edited by japarker24 2012-10-25 1:32 PM |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JAP, I would have to agree on most of what you say, but you seem to lead me to believe that the championship race is going to be somewhere special and that you know something. I may be wrong. If you do please elaborate. I plan on doing the 5 Cup races just for the sake of the free race, regardless. I travel up and down the East Coast mainly in Setup territories and have the flexibility to schedule when and where, so the 5 races will be no big deal. I think the cup will be a big success as Setup never does something lightly. I believe WL has the ability to hold about 900 people as I did the math this year and when the number of slots showed up, I added it to the registered count and it came out to be about 890. I am foregoing Belews. Nice lake and bike course, but I hate that run. Killed my calf twice running up that first steep section two years in a row. Done. On the fence for WL Half. Going to have to wait for my work schedule, but smooth roads, cooler temps and a later start time really, really peak my interest. Come on November 1st. I need to plan. |

If the heat complaints were about the run, and there was a later start time, wouldn't it be even hotter on the run? Also, I heard some comments on how awful some sections of the ride were, did they fix that/those roads? |

Although, anything is possible.......... The bike course is still a variable. Who knows if the NC DOT is really going to repave Hwy 53. I wouldn't count on all 19 miles of it being repaved, that's for sure. If Set Up changes the first part of the bike course, that will definitely help, but Hwy 53 (the last 19 miles of bumpity bump bump) is the real issue. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() notasfast - 2012-11-19 7:39 AM Maybe it has been done already ? Thanks, notasfast!!!! It says that the project took 12 days, so I'm going to assume you are correct, it has been completed. On Sunday after B2B, I drove home through White Lake to check on this and it had not been completed. But that was Oct 21, so they have had time to complete the project since then. This weekend will be a 4 day weekend for me, so I'll drive down there and report back. If I can work it in, I'll take my bike with me for a test run. Alan ETA: The article makes it sound like they did "chip seal" on the road. Not what I was hoping for (new asphalt), but probably still somewhat of an improvement. I would imagine new chip seal on a fairly high use road would be of higher quality than what we sometime associate with chip seal. Either way, it might not a "fast" section, but anything is better than "taint buster section" :-) |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm sorry to report that no work has been done on Hwy 53. I read the article again, and there is no mention of a date that was printed. I'm going to assume it refers to the last time Hwy 53 was "improved". On a positive note, the "new and improved" Wam Squam store is now open at the intersection of Hwy 53 and Hwy 701. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I rode the new WL Half course over the Xmas break and loved it. The ride in on 53 seemed a lot better than I remember it and after 56 miles I didn't have any saddle issues on the gap seal. Removing the first 12-13 miles of ump bump bump really made a difference. I also noticed that the WL Half is over 50% full now. Usually when it hits that number it starts to sell out real quick. |

I don't remember the first part of the ride being bumpy at all. In fact, I remember the first section to be the best part of the road (and the fastest section). Don't remember road issues until hitting 53. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thats funny. While I don't disagree that the last 20 miles in isn't the best in the world, but I would disagree with awful. The first 12-13 miles used to eject a lot of bottles but you never ever saw that on the last 20. The chip seal is not the smoothest road surface on the planet and I have been on some pretty awful chip seal. I would describe it as being about a 4 on a 1-10 scale with the first 36 being 9-10 on that scale. The gap seal is pretty benign on that stretch with no real thump thump thump and it really doesn't start till Over Lyons road, which mercifully has been removed from the course this year, so there's another 3-4 miles removed. Anyway, everyone has a different level of tolerance, and I have no issue with that stretch of the road. Its the run I always was dreading, due to the heat, and I think that will be well reduced for this years edition. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() On my way home from the Azalea Triathlon, I stopped in White Lake yesterday to ride the new bike course and take advantage of the beautiful weather. This is going to be a good race course, even though there hasn't been any improvement to the last 20 miles on Hwy 53. It was a good feeling to pass by Over Lyon Rd and not have to take that right hand turn for the out and back!!!! BTW, My garmin had the new course at 55.9 miles. |

I bet you guys are going to have a good time at WLH! I keep hearing horror stories about the course, but I didn't think that the Int'l course was all that bad (last year). I thought the run sucked TERRIBLY, though. Did you race Azalea Tri, Alan? I had a buddy that did and he had a blast! Actually, I think you know him...David Fairbanks. He came in 4OA. He said it was a fun little race. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I actually dont have an issue w the course...other than it is boring and the run is about as unimaginative and unshaded as can be. I didnt like the beginning of the bike course with the bumps but overall it is just a fairly boring ride. But then again everyone likes different things. The sun on that run course though...ugh...no relief...but hopfully it will be better being a month earlier this year. |
