On my way home from the Azalea Triathlon, I stopped in White Lake yesterday to ride the new bike course and take advantage of the beautiful weather.  This is going to be a good race course, even though there hasn't been any improvement to the last 20 miles on Hwy 53.  It was a good feeling to pass by Over Lyon Rd and not have to take that right hand turn for the out and back!!!!

BTW, My garmin had the new course at 55.9 miles.

I bet you guys are going to have a good time at WLH! I keep hearing horror stories about the course, but I didn't think that the Int'l course was all that bad (last year). I thought the run sucked TERRIBLY, though.

Did you race Azalea Tri, Alan? I had a buddy that did and he had a blast! Actually, I think you know him...David Fairbanks. He came in 4OA. He said it was a fun little race.

d00d,

The problem with the run course for the Olympic distance is that it runs along 701 and the turn around is at the Scotchman gas station.  There are absolutely no spectators (or shade) on that part.  For the half, you start to get some people and shade once you turn on to White Lake Rd.  The people at the motels on that section are usually cheering for the runners and they give you a "pick me up".  You don't get that little bit of distraction for the Olympic.

Really looking forward to racing the Half on the new date!

Alan

A couple of us from Fayetteville are riding the course on the 23rd starting around noon (some are doing the sampson county sprint that morning). Meeting at the gas station on the north end of the lake. Let me know if anybody's interesting in coming out too.

Anyone else starting to worry about the water temps?  I just ordered a full sleeve wetsuit because it looks like it's gonna be cold.

Not worried about the temps.  At least we know it WILL be wetsuit legal.  In years past, it was always a toss up on race morning.

At my local OWS site, the water temp is 54 degrees.  Considering Escape From Alcatraz was recently held where the water temp was 51, we shouldn't complain.  And they had to jump in without the ability of a warm up swim.  At White Lake, the venue is perfect for getting as much warm up (or as little) as you like.

I was at White Lake yesterday passing through and checked the water temp. It was 57 on the west side. Someone said 51, which I don't believe. I think it will just perfect race morning. 60-65 in a full wetsuit is like swimming in 72-74 without one. Perfect swimming temperature.

Just ordered a full sleeve as well, and looks like I'm screwed because the 86 degrees at my indoor pool makes me cold..

I swam there today...If that's 63, I'll kiss your ______, I'd wager closer to 53.  Man, that's some frigid water...feet were numb after 15 minutes. This will be my first season, so I have zero experience to draw from especially with OWS, but I know cold and now cold knows me.

Rode the White Lake Half course again yesterday and just thought of a PSA I'd like to share:

On the bike course at about mile 10, athletes will make a right turn from Hwy 701 onto Hwy 210.  Then at about mile 15, there is a stop sign at the intersection of Hwy 210 and Hwy 41.  There are 3 or 4 sets of "rumble" strips that alert you that the stop sign is approaching.  Just wanted to let everyone know because this could be a little upsetting if you are down in the aerobars and could possibly eject water bottles, other nutrition, etc.

Good luck to everyone racing!!!  See ya in 2 weeks!!

Alan

Edit for bold.

April 6th is now on the 10 day weather forecast:

http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Carolina+Sands+At+White+Lake+NC+1033005:5

Still a long way out for a weather forecast but you gotta like that one. The best part is the predicted wind b/c it can get windy out on that bike course.

as Japarker said it could drop. With rain today and tomorrow and temps not really getting out of the 50's it might end up at 52 deg come Saturday. Hmmm what to do now.

If the water temp gets low enough, do you think they will cancel the swim?

I've got visions of 2 years ago in my head.......just without the fog.

wow 52-54 water. Thank goodness it i snow looking like it should at least be around 55 air temp and sun to get on the bike. Still take a while to get warm after the swim. Totally confused as to what to wear now.
