New user 2 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN Hello to the group, My name is Tracy (male) I'm a 45 year old school teacher near Kansas City. I have been working the last few years to keep myself in some sort of shape mostly to avoid the assorted health problems that my genes have in store for me later in life. Last summer I was reading an article at the dentist office about triathlon and decided I would like to try it. I have not run any yet. I did attend one to watch how things are done and was blown away by the level of fitness of most of the competitors. I started training in earnest in August and joined this site and started logging workouts Sept. 1st. I have made quite a bit of progress and have done some base line run throughs for a sprint level event. I did run 1 5k back in Oct. but that has been my only race of any sort in 15 years. I try to train an hour a day 5 of 7 days but winter is here and my lungs don't allow me to run or bike in cold weather without coughing for days on end. So I have been spending quite a bit of time in the pool. Oh and I guess as a starting place for advice, I borrowed a mountain bike from my girlfriend just to have something to pedal (ave speed 12mph) so I am looking for suggestions about buying a used road bike of enough quality to get me some more speed there. I'm pretty sure that better equipment would help that area greatly. I'm able to run 5 mile base workouts without much pain 6 + is my breakdown point right now. I taught myself how to swim freestyle using youtube vids, I'm up to mile workouts of either 4x400 or 2x800 (I know the math is not exact). Also if anyone knows of indoor triathlon events in Jan/Feb in Missouri or Kansas please let me know. Oh, an I hope you all are having a wonderful Christmas day! |

My recommendation would be to go to your local bike shop and have someone do a basic measurement to determine the size of frame you need for your new ride. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can look for that size used and then take it into your LBS to get fit to you. It may require a few new parts to get it perfect, but it really is the key to comfort and speed. What do you mean when you hit 6m you are in pain? aerobic? or physical? |

Master 2005 Silverton, Oregon | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN Merry Christmas!!! Great to see more new folks, and welcome back to the old! It's a very nontraditional Christmas for us this year, but fabulous just the same. I'm spending the holiday at the Oregon Coast with both my daughters, son-in-law, and grandson. No tree, stockings, or gifts this year (except a few for my grandson), but lots of beach and family time. After the year we have all had it's wonderful to just hang out, relax, and laugh! Have a fantastic Christmas everyone! Hope Santa brought you just what you wanted. Brian- I did the Columbia Gorge Marathon in 2010. I am a fan of the hills and love the scenic courses, so it is one of my favorites. I haven't done Pacific Crest before, but have wanted to for about 5 years. Our new location and Rev3 Portland being canceled this year has made it the perfect time to get it done. John- Love the layout for Santa. Awesome! |

Our new location and Rev3 Portland being canceled this year has made it the perfect time to get it done. Roni...I actually liked the Columbia Gorge Course as well. Very scenic. For Pacific Crest Long Course...Be prepared for anything on the Bike. Last year they had to modify the Bike Course due to the weather (snow and very cold). The year I did it it was a real nice day, and we rode past 8 foot snow banks on the side of the road which was pretty cool. I was actually thinking about doing the Long Course Bike Ride offered that weekend. Off for a 45 min. run (IN THE RAIN). |

Mine has started jumping from The low 60s to 140+ within the first couple hundred yards. It eventually works its way back down over the first mile +, but it's a frustrating to try and pace by HR this way. Ideas, suggestions or anyone else have this problem? MY HEART RATE MONITOR ON MY GARMIN 305 DOES THIS AT THE START AND SETTLES IN AND COMES BACK DOWN. ALL MY RUNS ARE THIS WAY THOUGH. MY HEART RATE SPIKES ON THE FIRST INTERVAL. UNSURE IF IT IS WITHIN THE FIRST HUNDRED YARDS, BUT DEFINITELY WITHIN THE FIRST 8 MIN.AS SLOW AS I AM THAT VERY WELL COULDBE THE FIRST 100 YDS. : )I checked my heart rate again this morning. I wet it a little prior to running. It was the highest at the start 187. The next split is was back down to 157 and throughout my run it was in the 157 - 164 range. |

Veteran 175 Oklahoma City, OK | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN Merry Christmas!!!! Name: Holly Walker Background: I am 39yo.....turning the big 40 in a couple of weeks..... I work as a litigation paralegal and live in Oklahoma City. Family Status: Married 17 years and have a 13yo son. We also have 1 Great Dane and 1 German Shepard. Current Training: I am currently focusing on strength training. I started hitting the weights heavy a few months ago and am loving the results. I am slowly getting back into swim/bike/run. 2012 Races: No triathlon races this year for me. I did however do a half marathon and did my first obstacle course race. It was hard as hell, but so much fun!!! I definitely want to do more of these! 2013 Races: I plan on doing 2-3 tris this year and a couple of obstacle races. I would like to give the Spartan race a try. I have also talked my husband into his first 1/2 marathon. We will be racing the Vegas 1/2 in Nov. Weight Loss: I am pretty happy with where I am at weight wise......however I certainly wouldn't complain if I dropped another 5lbs or so. :-) Overall Goal: Continue with my steady weight training and get my run down to an 8.5 min. mile. Oh, and actually keep up with my training log.....I am really bad at this. |

Member 11 Coeur d' Alene, and AK | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN Merry Christmas everyone! I hope everyone has had a wonderful relaxing day. I'm stuck in snowy Anchorage for the day, so I'm spending the day watching snow accumulate and reading some BT archives. It would appear that everything was closed on Christmas eve, no gym, no pool and needed a rest day from a long run on Sunday. So instead of a great day of training I've decided that beer and chocolate will have to suffice! Back to it tomorrow though. Merry Christmas... |

Expert 913 Lost in the Evergreens | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN Merry Christmas, Anyone else get some good tri stuff this year. I found two pair of PI cycling gloves under the tree. One pair short white and a pair of screaming yellow winter gloves. Whoo hoo. Someone thinks I've been good this year. How does a new years polar bear dash or plunge sound? Or it might have to be a polar beer drink and chip dunk. Just saying, I will run for beer. The farther the run the better it tastes. I've not completed my race plans for 2013. Promise to update my sig line when I do.

New user 9 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - OPEN This says open, so I'll join you guys. I am a newbie to the sport of triathlons. NAME: Powered by Jun / Manny STORY: I am from Bellevue, WA in my first year of triathlons. I started trail running two years ago with a buddy of mine and realized this was a perfect sport for me to stay in shape. I realized that it was difficult at times to keep training up and it became an on and off thing. Last year I decided to sign up for my first half marathon and I did not perform like I wanted to. This gave me the motivation to consistently run. However, after building up my weekly miles rather quickly, I started to get foot injuries. This led me into biking for a low impact exercise. After biking in my hilly neighborhood, I realized that I enjoyed this! With the rain coming in Seattle, I realized my biking was limited to trainers so I decided to learn to swim. After watching the TI videos, I was finally able to last more than 1 lap in the pool. It was from then that I started to look into triathlons. I stumbled across this site and now i am constantly reading it! Now I have caught a severe case of the triathlon bug! FAMILY: Married to Christine for 6 years and I have a 4 year old daughter (Carolyn) and a 2 year old son (Braedyn). TRAINING: I am following the BT Learn to Swim and have been going 2-3 times a week. I am about to complete month 1 and can swim about 400 yards straight now! I get in about an hour on a trainer twice a week. I try to run 4 times a week and am just building up my base weekly miles. 2012 RACES: Seattle rock and roll 2013 RACES: Seattle rock and roll. Possibly the Seattle to Portland ride. One Sprint and one Olympic (TBD) when I am ready. WEIGHTLOSS: I am at 145, 5'7", 15%bf. I am trying to get around 135 for my races. |
