I'm hoping to get through my first marathon this year.  I would like to drop a bunch of weight before go-time.  Consider this a "before" picture with 25 weeks to go.

I'm digging the hair! Very handsome!

First marathon? Cool. Which one? You look pretty muscular--how much weight are you hoping to lose?

I plan on doing the Marine Corpse Marathon at the end of October.  I would like to drop about 30 lbs.  I just started back to weight training and the weight loss stopped right away.  I'm training my son for football and in the process, my bench is already back up over 300lbs.  I used to be a gym rat with the pinnacle of those days being a 380lb bench at 190lbs.  I would like to see that again now that I'm an old dude.

Lisa,

One thing I have found in Kansas is that I love the people but I can hardly breath while running.  Apparently, something out here is killing my allergies.  I'm on week 5 and this is the first time I have experienced breathing issues while running.

TeeJay, I'll post updates if you just keep posting any pictures of yourself.

Comet,  I have horrible hair but thanks.  haha  My daughter once said that my hair reminded her of the periodic table... copper, gold, silver blah blah blah.

That's interesting.  The first thing I noticed is that you look like a strong dude.  Have you had your body comp checked?  What is it and what would it be if you lost 30lbs of fat (not muscle)?  It's just you look to me like a guy who is big and strong, and I'm just wondering if you have 30lbs of fat to lose?

It may be difficult to keep lifting and training for a marathon and lose 30lbs.  You sound (and look) like the kind of guy who builds lean mass readily.  I also know it is difficult when I'm lifting to back it down once I'm in the weight room--that ego's a real trip;) but maybe it would be easier/more efficient to focus on the running and fat loss form that, get to your race weight, and then work your strength training back in?  This is coming from another I-just-look-at-the weights-and-starting-getting-big person who's also run a lot of marathons.

Marine Corps is an AWESOME one, btw.  Good for you.

I too have been at this a little over a year and have had really great results.  Going from fat to fit in that time.  I don't have any good shirtless before pictures because well I just didn't go shirtless in my fat days for fear someone might capture it on camera.

ya, its mentally tough and when you go for a sprint win you'll get major tunnel vision the closer to the line you get. Last night I brought about 7/10 mental game and 8/10 legs. Was able to hang with some of the Cat 1/2 guys but was missing jumps and gaps and not in the right group when breaks happened. Good preseason racing for sure. Our old Tri coach used to tell me everytime we do power and lactate testing that I should race track, wish I'd done so 25 years ago. At least I can afford to look fast now.

There are so many different races and ways to get points out there its a thinking game. Some races like Scratch races (first one at the end wins) are like checkers and simple to figure out, progressive points and snow balls and Aussie pursuits and other races are a bit more like playing chess. Two weeks ago Tyler Farrar was racing with us in prep for the Tour of California. He's fast for sure (was a junior national champ on the track) but we do have a mix of national champs and some ex Olympians (female) that race and where gunning for Tyler for sure. Couple of them managed to win some intermediate sprints off him.
