Originally posted by Chunga 6 miles today. Purpose-let some sadness out through exercise therapy. I made a bad decision on a dog and after 4 months with her took her to a more appropriate home for her today. Glad I have training in my life, helped some for this one day. Tomorrow I will repeat etc etc.

That is one of the best purposes running serves in my life.  Hope tomorrow is a little easier.  Hugs lady

oh boy, that kind of run was a huge part of how I got started. Big hugs! Keep running!
Thank you both! 2 miles today, purpose was warm up for 15 mile bike. Good workout, felt great to do it.

Yay to a good workout and to feeling a bit better

---

2 miles purpose: Streaking (sorry Salty)

One of the cool things about streaking is that it (or my laziness) forces me to run at times of the day I would never run if I were not streaking.  Tonight I got home at 10pm after being gone traveling for work, including 6 hours of drive time.  Wasn't really looking forward to a run, but once I got out there the stars were amazing, and the air has a hint of fall.  These runs are some of the most special, and the purpose, or perhaps the result, of these runs is the overwhelming gratitude that I can run.

I much prefer gratitude as a purpose. And a result Smile

Originally posted by orangeace Yesterday run was 2.5 miles at lunch. Purpose: get a quick recovery in mid day and hope my legs stop feeling like cinder blocks. Today: 4 mile Fartlek run. Legs felt really good this AM. My watch died after .5 mile which was kind of nice not to be looking at it. I might start doing some more runs with out my watch.

In line with the streaking running, it's sometimes good to run "naked" meaning sans watch or other GPS or electronic devices.

Nice going!

7.4, purpose: endurance 6, tempo 2.4 thinking about form with increased speed and fatigue. Ended up running 400m or so with the U I running backs and wide receivers and some special teams guys. Bwahahaha. That was entertaining.

6 miles, Purpose:  Speed and pacing. I wanted to build up the first two, hammer the next two, and taper down last two.

Nailed it!!

1) 9:40, 2) 8:25, 3) 7:40, 4) 7:40, 5) 8:10, 6) 9:15

Form focus during the run was driving knees high while keeping them in good alignment.

3 miles, purpose was simply to get some miles in and keep active before this weekend when I won't be running. I am doing the MS 150 ride here. My partner has MS and I am so grateful to be fit enough to do this in support of her.

Slick ^.  Do you try to hit your splits by feel and  not look at them until after the run or do you use your watch to pace your spits as you're running?

Very cool.

A woman I know in our town, who also happens to be a doctor, has been doing a lot of research on MS and diet.  Have you heard of Terry Wahls?  She had "advanced" MS, and in my early year of knowing her I watched her go from a cane to being wheel chair bound.  Through treating her diet, she is not only walking unassisted, bu walking normally and I see her on her bike all of the time.  Amazing story.

I haven't heard of her but I will check that out for sure.

That is an amazing improvement. There is a pharmacist from work with MS, she did the MS ride last year but this year she has really struggled with our training rides. She is going to try to do the 40 mile route and knowing her she will be upbeat and grateful to do Any of it!

Hitting my splits has always been a big game to me.  Every split is like a contest to me.  So much so that I have my Garmin set at half mile intervals now.  I like the immediate gratification of hitting a split.  I'm a lone wolf so it motivates me.  It's just me and the numbers out there and maybe a little OCD.

09-04: 2 miles nice and easy. My purpose was just to stretch out, monitor my form, and work up the tiniest bit of sweat. Had to take it easy because I have a race this evening (yes, a Thursday race).

I guess that will explain my purpose tonight. Hold a good pace coming out of T1. Pick up the speed at about .5 miles, again at a mile, and bring it home as hard as I can in the last mile. Looking at last year's results from this race, I feel like if I have a good bike today, I have a shot at top 3 in my AG...but you just never knmow who is going to show up.

This looks like some strong work.  What are those paces for you in terms of say your 5K or 10k pace or some other thing, like threshold?  Or why these paces?  Educate me.

Hey Mary,

I just wanted to share this link to Terry's website.  She is an INCREDIBLE person, and I have seen her beat this thing back first hand.  Her son is also very cool.  (He was one of my husband's students back in the day.) He became well-known for his testimony at the Iowa State House opposing the proposed amendment to ban gay marriage, which totally went viral and he has published a book recently, My Two Moms.

I've never really trained for a "fast" marathon, so I purchased Matt Fitzgerald's plan from training peaks.  The plan uses PZI, article found here http://home.trainingpeaks.com/articles/running/using-pace-zone-index.aspx, which is a modified version of Jack Daniels' VDOT.

I used Jack Daniels' training philosophy to get my 10K time below 40 mins, but I'm not as experienced with how to build distance while managing training at a pace that won't destroy me in the long run.

Matt's plan seems to give me the style of training that I like, while keeping the focus on building an aerobic foundation for the marathon distance.  Plus his name is Matt, so he's got to know what he's doing

edit:  Never answered your pace question.  My 5K PR was at 6:09 pace, and 10k is 6:24, so the strides in my run today were FAST, but from what I read that's the point of them.

4 miles for me today. Left the dog at home. I had two purposes in mind. Still trying to carefully build to my HM and wanted to see if the awesomeness of the Brooks on Sunday was a fluke. It wasn't. Those shoes are awesome.

Absolutely. It's not "run every single day" it's more like, ever day you run, run with purpose.
