Emmanem - 2010-01-17 4:18 PMHappy Monday everyone! Good to hear that all those who raced yesterday had a great time! I had planned on a run/walk today but not so sure that's gonna happen anymore. We don't have class today so 6 of us decided to go out for lunch. My boyfriend and I rode with our friend John whose 21st birthday is tomorrow. We got about 5 minutes from the apartment and John looked down to pick up a cup and a car in the lane beside us got in front of the driver in front of us. He kind of cut her off I guess because she slammed on her brakes. All I could do was scream JOHN right before we hit her. This was right after we had been stopped at a red light so thankfully we weren't going too fast (around 25-30mph). Still the impact was incredible. I couldn't believe how hard his car hit hers at just 25mph. It scared me to death. Thankfully none of us are seriously hurt, just sore from the seat belts. The airbags didn't deploy. Luckily there was a cop right where the wreck happened so he came and took care of everything right away. He was nice enough not to give John a ticket since his birthday is tomorrow. I felt so bad for him, he just got his car fixed from being rear ended over thanksgiving break and now his car is in even worse shape than the wreck he got in a over thanksgiving break. Right now, I'm sore and my chest hurts a little. I think that's where I took the majority of the impact. So needless to say I'm taking it easy for the rest of the day. I may get on the treadmill and walk for a bit but I haven't decided yet. I'm just happy it wasn't any worse.

Congratulations to all you racers.  Sounds like some great efforts were put out this weekend!

Also congrats to the new bike owners.  Anxious to see pictures.  I'm still trying to decide on what to do about the bike this season.

Sorry group... I have not been ignoring you.  Just busy as a one-legged man in a butt kickin' contest at work and computer issues at home... been relying on the BB for data entry & forum reads are slow...  I am working on getting caught up & will try to get to the TL's of all the great members of this MG!

Congrats & Thanks to all the peeps that ran on Sunday! It was an awesome day!  I wish we could have somehow included everyone in the group in an event like that!  Mucho-funO!

I agree with everything you/kim listed out, anyone else have some thoughts? I'll list mine later but I'm looking for adding as much variety into aiding the same limiter and honestly I can only think of a few...

Houstonrider - 2010-01-19 8:48 AM Depends on the person I would think. The situation explains my race perfectly. Cadio wise I was fine but my form and legs started to break down at around mile 11 (due to under training). I'm assuming the person you are referring to had properly trained so I wouldn't think he/she was under trained.

From some one who knows little about training, to build leg strength with out using weights I would;

-Increase the intensity of the work outs and decrease the duration (more speed work).
-Run hills more often (good luck finding them in Houston)
-Consume more protein to help the muscles recover faster
-If the person is overweight (like me) reduce body weight.

Now Evondo, tell me where I am totally off base...........

evondo - 2010-01-19 8:06 AM Question for everyone...

Someone I know who recently did a half marathon who may or may not be in this group had plenty of cardio fitness during the race but legs were hurting the last few miles.  To get faster work needs to be done on limiter, leg strength. I have a few thoughts of things to do besides weights but would like to hear what others think...

I have an awesome leg strengthing routine.  You all come down here and climb Mt. Rainer with a 60 pound pack on your back.  Your legs will be pumped  OK, so I am really just trolling for climbing partners....

Thanks for the article Justin.  I do hills once a week and have been doing my longs runs on Allen Parkway (the best hills I got that are close to me).   Guess I need to incorporate a few other things as well.

Good article, my suggestions were step-ups, jump rope, lunges and more hills. Maybe instead of traditional speed work day, it'll be a speed work hill day

speaking of puking.

Back in the day when I actually did my planned lifting session (wait, that was pre-triathlon days) I actually use to warm up with 10+ minutes of skip rope.  It's awesome.  I do suggest not doing it barefoot though cause it hurts like a bugger if the rope catches your toe.

All great suggestions!  I second the lunges and would even add squats to the mix.  I've been (and will continue with this for the next month or two) doing hill workouts in place of regular speed workouts, and I'm finding it to be really helpful.

On a side note, I used to work with a trainer at the gym and he made me jump rope.  I had the funny notion it was going to be super easy....not even close!!!  Jump rope is HARD!!!

I'm back.  Thanks everyone for thinking of me and taking care of Ken.  Congrats to everyone who ran the half, sorry I missed it.

The weekend was really lovely, much better than I anticipated, glad I left a lot of my fear behind.
We came together and took very good care of my friend surrounding her with a village of strong women who love her.  We cooked, drank, stayed up WAY too late and laughed a lot.  We blessed her way into this crossroads and showered her with love.  So glad I went and wouldn't have missed it for the world.

My 2C's - there is a myriad of exercises targeting leg strength.
A few that come to mind: 1.) Lunges (with or without weights)..2.) Single leg squats (with or without weights)..last but not least one of the few underated exercise out there that will help build mass, strengthen, and build lean body mass on the shortest time period is Deadlifts..

Other exercises that wil help are: single leg wall raises, chair pose, regular squats, negative squats, etc.. to name a few....

Later,
