I agree with the lunges and squats.  My trainer had me doing lunges with my front foot WAY out in front and my back foot on a bench.  Even with just body weight it hardly takes any time to start burning.  I had always thought of lunges as working the front leg more, but these KILL the back leg if you keep your torso erect (i.e., fight your natural inclination to bend at the waist when you get tired).

Also, doing body weight single-leg squats on an upside down bosu ball (platform up) will really get your legs working, and it has the added benefit of working your balance.  Seems to use lots of muscles--even the muscles in my feet get tired from this one!

KelliD - 2010-01-19 2:36 PM All great suggestions!  I second the lunges and would even add squats to the mix.  I've been (and will continue with this for the next month or two) doing hill workouts in place of regular speed workouts, and I'm finding it to be really helpful.

On a side note, I used to work with a trainer at the gym and he made me jump rope.  I had the funny notion it was going to be super easy....not even close!!!  Jump rope is HARD!!!

evondo - 2010-01-19 2:25 PM Good article, my suggestions were step-ups, jump rope, lunges and more hills. Maybe instead of traditional speed work day, it'll be a speed work hill day

I just wanted to thank everyone for your kind words/thoughts/inspires today and yesterday! I'm feeling a lot better today just my neck that's sore and stiff right now but I managed to get a workout in which thankfully didn't bother my neck at all. I just took it easy though, didn't want to do too much too fast, but I'm hoping I'll be back to my normal intensity workouts soon. Thanks again everyone!!

I'm so happy your trip went well. Welcome back!
KeriKadi - 2010-01-19 5:27 PM

The weekend was really lovely, much better than I anticipated, glad I left a lot of my fear behind.
We came together and took very good care of my friend surrounding her with a village of strong women who love her.  We cooked, drank, stayed up WAY too late and laughed a lot.  We blessed her way into this crossroads and showered her with love.  So glad I went and wouldn't have missed it for the world.

I agree with the lunges (all varieties), deadlifts absolutely rock, and would add Good Mornings. Those will work the back and hamstrings, just make sure you have good form so you don't get injured, same for Deadlifts. Search google vids for proper technique.

Keep in mind that sometimes internal injuries can take some time to show their face.  For sure keep your workouts mild for a few days.

Emma - Glad you are ok, make sure you listen to your body.

I have to say I'm pretty bummed right now.  As you all know I just missed the half and this evening I found out I will likely miss my first planned Oly as well Yell  I found out April 24 is the planned date for our oldest to make his Confirmation, no Lonestar for me Frown.  They haven't even sent out the letter yet but one of the directors told me the date this evening over the phone.  I am not a happy camper.
Not sure I'll be able to keep up motivation with no races on the horizon.

So I still can't get my computrainer to work properly!  It seems that the head unit doesn't want to communicate to the computer after 30 sec into the course.  The guy I bought it from already sent me all new wires and now he's driving in (over an hr drive) to deliver another head unit and motor.  His service is much better than buying it directly from the dealer!  Hopefully it'll work properly soon.  From the 30 sec I tried it, it seems pretty cool.

So my planned ride did not happen, I had some family stuff to deal with and by the time I would have been able to go it was below freezing and dark out, I did not want to be out on a first ride 5km from a road in the dark, on icy pathways. I went for my best run to date instead. Felt great and I could have gone longer but the gym was closing. Body weight this AM was 302!!!(Three hundred and two) I'm sooo skinny!! LOL. This is legitimatley smaller than I have been in almost 20 years without being sick and dehydrated. Realistically I should be under 3 bills by the weekend. Tongue out

Thanks.  I know there are plenty of sprints but the point wasn't to just fill my schedule but to work towards a longer distance.  There isn't another Oly until August.  I find it difficult to train for something so far away.  I just don't see myself training for 8 months with no payoff/gratification.

I hope you get it working soon or I am going to feel bad about buying your other trainer.  Here is hoping that the new head unit and motor will do the trick...sometimes new high tech toys are a bigger pain in the neck then they should be.

I have a question for the group.......... Since the half marathon my left leg/knee has been sore. Every day it has gotten better and it is similar to what I had experienced in the past. The pain is a dull tightness. I can do squats and lunges with out any increase in discomfort, but the soreness is still there. After my spin yesterday I felt better, so the question is..... I have 65 minute easy run scheduled today (part of a recovery week in HIM training), should I:

A: Go for the easy run and just see how it feels
B: Just rest, no run
C: Switch days and swim today

Guess I should give some insight to the thought process huh?

A. To soon post race to be running that far, your legs need recovery.
B. Easy exercise helps speed up recovery post race better than nothing
C. Switch days means you'll do that long distance sometime soon and you need recovery

Happy Wednesday everyone! Well apparently it's my unlucky week because now I'm sick. I think it's just a cold, felt awful last night. This morning I feel a lot better but I'm losing my voice and my throat hurts. So I'm officially taking some time off training and resting/writing a 12 page paper due in 8 days (gotta love college!!!)
